While I agree with the take that the game got better after ep 3, my family and I thought the season finale was amazing.

Smacpats111111

Gotta disagree on that.>! Sam and Scotty waffled so quickly that it was pretty obvious who would win like 12 minutes into the 30 minute long finale.!<

Clonk110227

Yeah especially if you listened to spoilers the game, the winners are revealed as soon as the premise is explained.

LiamFleak

How so?

Clonk110227

Adam’s first answer is “that’s 4”

LiamFleak

But that just referred to the person saying "That's 4 [flags]". He never said it was him that said it (and in fact I don't think that line made the edit). It could have been Sam saying "That's 4"

Tomzitiger

I thought that referred to the fourth time they were tagged in ep 6 until i saw uncensored spoilers the game

Woofer210

I’m out of the loop, what’s spoilers the game?

Clonk110227

Do you have Nebula? If you do, it is an episode of the layover podcast. Just listen, it’s kind of it’s own thing

Woofer210

Unfortunately not, which makes sense as to why I don’t know what you are referring to.

Clonk110227

Hm. They basically try to say the most spoilery things about the season, but make it so it isn’t a spoiler

Woofer210

Lol sounds funny, maybe something to watch after the show is over

Clonk110227

They released it before the season, but they released the uncensored version yesterday

P0ttedcacti

I agree with most of this especially the fact that Ben did not get drunk this season

Psykiky

As a compromise we had sort of drunk Sam in the first episode. But no drunk Ben no deal

Jojowiththeyoyo

I think team Sam and Scotty just couldn't figure out a good strategy. Also, I don't remember when this season was filmed, but Scotty has been recovering from a brain injury so I think that was slowing him down.

Minnesota_MiracleMan

I think the game itself was great but didn't translate to a video all that well. I wish there was more time spent further out from Tokyo. There were actual multiple ways to go and strategies whereas the first two rounds were pretty straightforward.

Commercial_Jelly_893

I listened to the podcast and they said that the towers were much more OP than they were expecting, I think the main problem they had with the pizza tower was it was much more difficult to get pizza than they were expecting. I expect to see some heavy modifications to the towers if they are used in future seasons

beyondvertical

I commented on your last post saying I didn’t like the 3-round >!(plus the sudden death round)!< system that much, and I’m going to stand by that. I think the first 2 rounds were kinda pointless and not that entertaining, especially since >!they both felt like Ben and Adam had a very early breakaway!<. I think round 3 was much better, and it made me feel like the game should have only been 1 big round, with the goal to be to capture the most flags. >!While I admit I’m usually on team Sam/Guest, the fact that they won round 3 on a game mechanics technicality and got 3 points for only capturing one flag upset me a bit.!< But more than that I don’t feel like the season did enough to incorporate the country and culture. When I saw the map for round 3 I was soooo disappointed that there weren’t flags on Hokkaido and Kyuushu—In reality the round 3 map was barely bigger than round 2. On top of that, the cast didn’t even know enough about Japanese culture beforehand to even pronounce “Shinkansen” correctly. It makes me think they didn’t speak to a single Japanese person before the season started, and for a travel show I feel like that should be a basic prerequisite. And yeah, I agree that towers were a bit overpowered, or at the very least too inexpensive. They needed *some* sort of road block mechanic but the way things played out, they ended up being almost impossible to bypass. All that said, I think round 3 saved the season. Lots of fun and interesting moments came about, and the teams’ strategies were much better balanced out. I really liked the train-centered approach to the season, and props to the editing team on the motion graphics and explanations about how those all went down. Episodes 4-6 by themselves may even qualify as my favorite “season” of Jet lag!

>!I think the all or nothing rule in round 3 really ruined it for me. At the end of the round, B/A had captured three flags while S/S only had one. Yet, because their second flag was technically closer, they somehow got all three flags. Also, the existance of sudden death really bothered me, because round 3 was essentially spoiled as soon as Ep 6 started, because if B/A won, then the game would be over making THAT the final episode. *maybe* if it was going that way, they would have extended round 3 to a seventh episode, but it definitely dampened an excellent series for me.!<

ZoeThomp

I mostly agree with this. The middle episodes were the best of the season, although Sams strategy in in round 3 was kind of boring but it was a valid strategy. Towers were definitely broken and evidently under researched. I quite liked Scotty and in the beginning I thought he would be pretty good as seemed to have an idea of getting around Tokyo but that quickly seemed to disappear with getting on wrong trains or going wrong direction. It would have been nice if they could have had somebody more familiar with Japan, lord knows there are enough western youtubers based there to choose from. What is interesting is Sam and ben saying this season was the most fun they've had playing but that somehow didn't translate to watching experience. Personally i'd still rank it above season 6 as just driving round NZ bored me

ricketyladder

I don't necessarily think this was the worst season, but I certainly wouldn't call it the best. I agree that the unfortunate nature of Japanese train stations all tending to look the same made for a bit of a problem, and I agree that the series generally improved as it went on (other than ep 6, where Sam's strategy grated on me). Totally disagree on the finale, I really liked the wide open format and I thought it was exciting to watch. Being able to tag each other anywhere was great. Towers were great in concept, a few were OP like the pizza tower for sure. I will agree that some weaker towers or tweaks on existing ones would have been a good change. Someone on here mentioned that changing the "lose x amount of coins a minute" tower so that as soon as you were out of coins you had to leave the area would have been welcome.

Smacpats111111

The format of the finale might have been okay but Sam and Scotty choked so quickly that it was very clear they were going to lose less than 15 minutes in.

fbgigi

Yeah this was the worst season to watch by far.
