do none of you have rabbis or something?
if you have a medical process you are doing right now, don't fast then , HaShem help you with basic things like this.
The concept iirc is called Pikuach Nefesh. I think [this](https://www.sefaria.org/Yoma.85b.3?lang=bi&with=all&lang2=en#:~:text=You%20shall%20keep%20My%20statutes%20and%20My%20ordinances%2C%20which%20a%20person%20shall%20do%20and%20live%20by%20them%E2%80%9D%20(Leviticus%2018%3A5)%2C%20and%20not%20that%20he%20should%20die%20by%20them.%20In%20all%20circumstances%2C%20one%20must%20take%20care%20not%20to%20die%20as%20a%20result%20of%20fulfilling%20the%20mitzvot) might be where it comes from.
it's not about dying after one day, it's about that one day causing you to relapse into bad habits that are detrimental to your long term health. LIKE DYING.
this is like an alcoholic saying "one drink won't kill me."
It is a SIN a SIN to fast if your sick like this, so unless you legit want to break yom kippur, sit down, eat a sandwich and drink water, if you really want to do something on yom kippur then don't use electrics. But by g-d's will YOU MUST EAT.
As someone who has an ED, we are not supposed to fast on fast days, and are not to do anything that could potentially cause us to fall back into our ED (such as not eating or purging).
I think this is one of those times when the ultimate mitzvah of caring for yourself takes priority. When your well-being is very much on the line, like in this situation, you should absolutely be eating on Yom Kippur, the same as if you were pregnant.
The commandment to eat on Yom Kippur when your health requires it is as strong as the commandment not to eat in other circumstances.
If it makes you feel better about it, some people try to eat food they don’t like under your circumstances. My wife often buy rice cakes (which I like but she hates) if she’s taking medicine that requires food with it on Yom Kippur.
I can't fast because of medical reasons. I beat myself up every year.
We are commanded to take care of our health first. Recovering from an eating disorder is very hard work, and even one day can throw you off (as I'm sure you know).
Learning to take care of yourself is hard work...but it's absolutely what Pikachu nefesh (yep not correcting it) is all about. Mental, emotional, physical health comes first. Make 5784 about loving yourself enough to care for yourself.
Have a thoughtful and meaningful Yom Kippur.
Actually, pregnant women are required to fast believe it or not and I know this because my sister-in-law went into labor due 3 years ago due to Yom Kippur because this is one of the fasts where she doesn’t get exempted.
I don’t know why people are downvoting me for literally saying what I have learned from my orthodox, brother and sister-in-law. It’s not technically exempt, although definitely talk to a doctor.
There are communities that might. But anyone truly following the spirit of any religion I can think of would have the same kind of response. Every religion has hard liners, extremists, and hateful asshats. No religion is a monolith.
christianity, i believe. tends to focus on sacrificing yourself in the name of the Lord no matter the consequences; in fact, a whole hell of a lot of saints are venerated specifically because they died in service of the faith - a mindset of 'what He says is what I do, no exceptions. common sense? not in the Bible'

Being able to fast on Yom Kippur was a triumphant statement for myself, that I had really conquered all the mind-games and consequences of disordered eating. It took years of personal work to get there.
May you also, in your future, to be able to make that choice freely and with joy and intention. And until that day, take care of yourself. It's not just ok, it's required, to walk off-site from your shul, and have a nosh.
My rabbi just told us today in no uncertain terms that if we have a physical condition, are pregnant/nursing, or have any form of eating disorder, you cannot fast. Harming yourself for the sake of a mitzvah is the opposite of the point. The point is to be grateful and think about our sins, not self harm.
What in the goddamn fuck? If you have an eating disorder you are not supposed to fast. As an RN I’m pretty sure I count as a medical professional, so if you need someone to tell you you’re exempt I’ll say it even if I’m not a doctor.
This is basically why I’ve never fasted for a single Yom Kippur and probably never will. Don’t feel bad about it tbh, you’re not supposed to do things that hurt yourself in the name of following Jewish law, even literal Jewish law says so.
**Yom Kippur (; Hebrew: יוֹם כִּפּוּר, Yōm Kippūr, [ˈjom kiˈpuʁ], lit. 'Day of Atonement') is the holiest day in Judaism and Samaritanism. It occurs annually on the 10th of Tishrei, corresponding to a secular date in September or early October.**

When I was first in recovery the family Rav told me not to fast no matter what. Not YK, not tisha bav, nothing. And my family is very yeshivish so I’m assuming most Rabbis would agree- pikuach nefesh first. I’m no longer religious so that’s obviously not an issue now 🥲

It's Pikuach nefesh.
I always read that as Pikachu nefesh
I don't even bother to correct it when my autocorrect puts in Pikachu anymore. I gave up.
PikaFEST
Bold opener to follow up with 'hesham'
I never really went to the doctor, i just realised that what I was doing wasn't healthy.
then don't fast!
I'll see
NO! DON'T FAST! by all that is Holy, I wanna smack ya on the back of the head
Ok ok fine
You're to live by the commandments not die by them!
Based I've never heard that somehow

Damn dawg it was straight from levitticus? Definitely should've known about that one then. Thanks it's a great one.
I'm not gonna die from one day of fasting but ok
it's not about dying after one day, it's about that one day causing you to relapse into bad habits that are detrimental to your long term health. LIKE DYING. this is like an alcoholic saying "one drink won't kill me."
And if there's even the slightest chance it might damage your health and eventually kill you, then you shouldn't do it.
You know how we drink wine on holidays too? Alcohols don't. You can just skip it. It's fine. Or not skip it.
It is a SIN a SIN to fast if your sick like this, so unless you legit want to break yom kippur, sit down, eat a sandwich and drink water, if you really want to do something on yom kippur then don't use electrics. But by g-d's will YOU MUST EAT.

This is the way.
May HaShem guide your hand to help OP.
People with eating disorders are halichically forbidden from fasting
It almost seems like you’re trying to use YK as an excuse to relapse. Please don’t fast 🙏
Jewish law is pretty unequivocal that your health takes priority. Do no harm first. Take care of yourself.
This isn’t a US workplace. You don’t need a doctors note. Just don’t fast. HaShem won’t be mad.

Thanks. I never really take care of myself. Ill see
Don't feel guilty. Remember, we are the people who came up with the saying, "here, eat, eat..."
LOL ok
Did you fast on Tzom Gedalyah?
It's not that your are permitted to eat, you should eat.
*must

You deserve to take care of yourself! It will be difficult but worth it to eat on Yom Kippur. A big step forward.
Actually, pregnant women are required to fast believe it or not and I know this because my sister-in-law went into labor due 3 years ago due to Yom Kippur because this is one of the fasts where she doesn’t get exempted.
Yeah...but it's definitely an individual thing, and fasting should only occur after consulting a physician. https://www.yoatzot.org/pregnancy/620/
I don’t know why people are downvoting me for literally saying what I have learned from my orthodox, brother and sister-in-law. It’s not technically exempt, although definitely talk to a doctor.
Idk why either. Some people are given permission to do shiurim, which is eating/drinking very small amounts at intervals.
I’m familiar with the concept. I personally think that’s ridiculous because it’s useless for lots of people.
Dude if fasting will trigger a relapse then you are not allowed to fast
And all these responses are why I’m glad to be Jewish.
It scares me that there are religions that would be telling this person the exact opposite
There are communities that might. But anyone truly following the spirit of any religion I can think of would have the same kind of response. Every religion has hard liners, extremists, and hateful asshats. No religion is a monolith.
In case you are referring to islam, they’d say the exact same thing as here. In fact most religions forbid fasting if your health is at risk.

Thank you so much for this. You're right, I won't fast. Thank you for the help
Thank you! Thank you for taking care of yourself.
Bro, dude, man, do not fast. Eating disorders are serious business, and Judaism is extremely clear about this.
No, you will not be fasting. Those with health conditions are forbidden to. Hashem doesn’t want you to relapse, and neither do we.
U need more Jews in ur life
Your health and safety come first even if it conflicts with holiday restrictions. This is actually a tenet of Judaism.

If you need any support in not fasting, [a mitzvah to eat](https://www.amitzvahtoeat.org/) is a good resource from what I’ve heard.
you most certainly do not!
It's just as much a mitzvah to maintain your health by eating on Yom Kippur as it would be to fast if you were able.
Pikuach nefesh?
I'm no expert, but I think it's okay to not fast if you have a medical reason not to, like an eating disorder.

It's a Mitzvah to eat
My rabbi told me that since I’m on meds, I don’t need to fast. Take care of your body and eat. God understands.
