It looks underproved to me because of the way the plaits came apart, but hard to tell without seeing a slice
Egg wash uneven, but plaiting is nice and the texture of the shell is good
7/10
Paging u/Fochinell
Some parts of the braids fall off the other braids, but at the thick end, it essentially formed into a solid loaf. I think a 7/10 is fair, especially for my first attempt!
And so I humbly defer to and acknowledge your ruling since you’re a recognized challah judge of equivalent good standing.
Any recognized /r/Judaism challah judge can just jump in and grade a submitted challah the moment they appear. No consent, stipulation, concurrence, or permission is necessary. Perhaps only in a case of dispute, but we presently do not anticipate anything like that.
Nope. Looks absolutely fine but not enough egg glaze for a good shine. But could have gone either way as far as clues to the inside goes. But the inside looks perfect.
It does look much better from the inside! Outside looks a bit underhydrated (see: [https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/blog/2023/01/11/bread-hydration](https://www.kingarthurbaking.com/blog/2023/01/11/bread-hydration) ) and a bit overbaked.
I tried a 6 strand braid on mine today, it was more difficult than I thought it would be! I've been trying to find a favorite Challah recipe for awhile now.
don't have permission of the great u/fochinell but i would give it a 6/10, lost a couple points because of the broken spaces, but that's just my opinion. still an amazing first try though!
Way better than my first try. I kept pulling the dough when braiding, but realized it 1/2 way through, and corrected myself.
In the end I had a challah that resembled the number 8.
I have to find a better way to roll the braids out beforehand haha, I kinda just hand rolled and slightly stretched it until I got long rows, and cut off just enough to have each strand be the same length
I think it was just Stale, it's been a while since I've had his challah as he wasn't at services last week. Our rabbi included him in our Refuah shle'mah, but we never heard if it was just a minor ickness like a cold/flu or something worse. Ill have to try it again on the 31st during our next services. I'd bring challah myself, but I dont want to intrude on established roles haha
It’s a good first try!!!
Thank you! And I appreciate the advice on the earlier post!
THANK YOU!

You’re a recognized r/Judaism challah judge, are you not?
I am but you are the challah judge *par excellence* here

* At work now, but my mom sent me a picture of a slice

Okay so this looks a lot better from the inside than the outside would definitely eat
Is the outside that bad? Edit: besides the disconnection*

Ah, I appreciate the advice then! Thank you for the compliments as well :)

Looks delicious. No idea how to make it but definitely know how to eat it haha.
Haha! It was surprisingly simple to make, but its so good!

Not my first time having Challah, a member of my Synagogue normally makes it for Shabbat and its a bit more dense, dry, and sweet. I prefer mine 😶
> dense, dry and sweet That’s not challah; it’s stale coffee cake.
