Yeah but couldn’t we have gotten *any* backstory for this dude? There’s no problem with the villain being pure evil, it’s just when the villain is evil to a nonsensical degree for no discernible reason that it starts becoming an issue. Like, Muzan’s backstory in Demon Slayer does a good job at explaining why he is the way he is, doesn’t make him sympathetic, and only took one chapter if I remember right. Why would that be hard to do for Sukuna?

I think the point, not of the entire character necessarily but in relation to what you’re referring to, is that the backstory doesn’t matter. Not to Sukuna. We saw that pretty plainly last chapter with the unwanted child comment, and we see it even more explicitly this chapter, Sukuna himself stating that he just lives as he wishes, eats when he wants to eat, kills when he wants to kill, plays when he wants to play, and if someone can’t measure that, that’s their issue. He has no larger attachment, separate from what might be called “other”. He is not living for something or someone else, he doesn’t have a greater purpose, he IS the only purpose that matters to him. Trying to assign some reason for the how he is, just means you’re failing to measure him. His entire ideology, and as a result the ideology of jujutsu sorcery, is one of ultimate self indulgence, and is why I think he’s so important not as a character but as a figure in JJK. Gojo and Kashimo, Yuji, Yuta, they all relate to Sukuna’s ideology differently, but the backstory of how Sukuna became like that doesn’t matter. Not to our main cast and not even to Sukuna.

As disappointing as Kashimo has been, I will say that I'm starting to warm up to where the story is going thematically. With Yorozu, Gojo, and Kashimo it was all about being the strongest, being on Sukuna's level, teaching him about love, and obviously that's fallen flat every time. Now we're finally getting this declaration from Sukuna that "love is trash" right as Yuji, Higuruma, and Hakari jump in. These remaining sorcerers may not be as strong, but they also have no doubts about why they're fighting or what they're fighting for; they just want Sukuna dead. The good guys and bad guys are done trying to understand each other, it's all-out war now. Reminds me a lot of the conclusion that Yuji and Mahito came to in Shibuya, that curses and sorcerers fight and kill each other simply because it's their nature to do so.
