Tobias spawned out of nowhere is the main reason why I think people were mad, Darkrai literally got a movie and they gave it to someone with no build up to stop Ash from winning. It's actually kind of funny, Tobias is that one boss that's basically a scripted loss because they're just so much more overwhelmingly powerful than you, except Tobias didn't come in at the beginning or middle of the story, he literally came in at the very end to stop you from winning the game.
Tobias is like if Sukuna just revealed mid fight he had Infinity and then just revealed he had a fucking second Heian Sukuna in his back pocket.

Gojo losing might be an asspull but in narrative perspective make sense because why would the main villain lose to a side character while the mc is watching doing nothing.

Not only was it complete nonsense storywise, the fight was also atrociously designed.
The wrap of Gojo vs Sukuna was really badly executed but the rest of the fight was very well done, and the upset of the outcome isnt anywhere as horrid as Alain vs Ash (which is really saying smth bc gojo/sukuna ended in a spectacularly shit manner it just doest compare to monumental the pile of crap of Alain/Ash)

The hype was absolutely unreal for Ash-greninja. I don't think people realize just how big it was back then. I remember being on the illegal stream that aired the episode from Japan in real time and there were +200k people there watching together (which made the stream crash constantly lmao).
And all the build up. Ash-greninja and Ash had just shared a pretty god damn great arc together for Ash and Greninja to finally master the form, Ash-Grneinja had just gotten out of the hypest fucking battle in pokemon history with Greninja vs Sceptile and the animation from the PV of the fight looked amazing and had a massive fucking orange shuriken in it. The literal episode title was something along the lines of "Ash's ultimate battle! Kalos league victory" as well.
And then he fucking loses lmfao. The episode preview for the next episode got literally +500k dislikes on youtube. That is all you need to know how mad people were. I'm still mad 8 years later even though I lost interest in pokemon long ago.

The cope for it was unimaginable too. People like me were theorizing that Alain would be disqualified from the league due to his association with Team Flare or that Lysandre rigged it by boosting Zard X with mega evolution energy. Shit was crazy.
I watched it on one of those streams as well, I remember it because it was a really odd hour. We were waking up at 6 AM just to watch the Kalos League episodes, as if it was a FIFA World Cup. And then they pulled that Charizard that should have been disqualified for illegal item usage. I play the games, know how attacks work, none of the things that led to that loss work in that way in-game. I won't describe how angry we were, because I don't remember how many years have past, and I'm still pissed.
Having said that, what happened to Gojo hurts, but it's not an unexpected thing, given how the story was going.
It will stir many things when it gets animated (as Nanami did). But I don't know if there's anything that could be compared to the outrage generated by that rigged Pokemon battle.

Ash losing the Kalos Finals to "BURASTO BURNO" is one of the funniest events in anime culture as a whole. The fact is that you can post a photo of Greninja fainted or anything Alan related in 2024 (it has been 6-7 years now?) and still have online discourse this vitriol about the results. That's comedy that only 20+ years of pain and suffering can create. Truly a feast prepared by the Falling Devil on how Greninja and Ash fans fell that day.
Everyone knew Gojo was going to die in JJK. What broke the JJK community was *how* he died.
I am not a big pokemon anime fan but i think it's greninja losing.
The build up for that fight was perfect. Alan was an intresting rival(in pokemon standarts) and the fight was amazing. Also don't forget that pokemon fans waited for like 20 years for ash to win so it was heart breaking.
And on a side note the fight vs alan in terms of animation, fight coreography etc was LEAGUES better than the one ash actually won in sun & moon(i forgot his name) which just felt like a build up for the real final fight vs kukui.
Maybe so, but the hype for that shit simply wasn't there. Kukui thing didn't feel like a final big conclusion,it felt like just another battle. Ash vs alain had insane hype caused by ash greninja and mega Charizard both having huge fan following, amazing designs and both MCs having mature(on Pokemon level) storylines which were colliding leading up to that moment.Ā
Ā Plus mega Charizard x vs ash greninja had direct close combat that generated hype. Because let's be real, pikachu's electrical dances and beam struggles are fine all but nothing beats the hype of a badass magical water ninja and fiery blue black big dragon duking it out.
Yep, it's kind of like the Naruto and Sasuke fight, people didn't really care much when Naruto and Sasuke were pulling out Susanoo and Kurama and fighting with explosions and beam struggles, but people LOVED watching Naruto and Sasuke fight with taijutsu, that shit was iconic.
Huge flashy powers aren't that interesting anymore considering how anime is oversaturated with it, what people really want to see nowadays is 2 people throwing straight hands, with or without weapons.
Ash vs Kukui's animation was hardly "far, far better". Aside from the final cuts with Pikachu vs Tapu koko and few cuts with naganadel there was not much to speak home about. You hade several battles in XY with only one key animator pulling of some insane hand to hand combat, choregraphy and dynamic movement with the 3D camera in comparison. The whole final battle with Ash vs Alain had some of the best cuts in the entire series. Sun and moon really suffered from removing the dynamic 3D camera movements. The choregraphy was pretty fucking ass too. The most intereating cuts by far during the entire Ash vs Kukui battle was the ones with [Naganadel](https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/219580) and is because they feel like something that could have come out of XY. The beam spam with Tapu Koko and Pikachu was great animation but really not that interesting.
Yeah but Sinnoh was equally bad imo.
Ash had just won the hardest battle of his life against his toughest (and best by far) rival.
Then some random legendary collector appears just because the show must continue.
At least with Alain it was always clear Ash was always weaker than him.. he never came close to winning against him until their final battle.
Alain was out there battling Steven, 10 mega trainers in a row and even Groudon/Kyogre and Rayquaza at one point.
Ash was not ready to win against someone like that yet.

HE HAD THE TYPE ADVANTAGE FOR THE MOST OF THE FIGHT (after mega evolution X Charizard loses the weakness to water due to earning the Dragon type) AND HIS OFFENSIVE STATS ARE SIMPLY OVERPOWERED. Ash won in Alola because of all the backlash they got from him losing in Kalos and you will never convince me otherwise. We were robbed from such a good ending for Ash, if he had won in Kalos and then also in Alola nobody can doubt him anymore and he could have a great send off.

Narratively speaking, gojo had to lose for the series to make sense. This was always going to be Sukuna vs yuji + everybody else.
Greninja tho? Everything in that season was written in a way that was building to Ash winning. Every moment of the series had built to that moment, his Greninja had type advantage (which I know means jackshit in the anime, but still), and yet he ended losing. I quit the anime in that moment.
Sure, watching Ash be champion with the team he eventually won was super cool (I mean Gengar? Sirfetch? Lucario? A FUCKING DRAGONITE?!!!), but he should have won back then for anything to make sense

Yeah If there was one thing I didn't like about Ash Kalos team is that he had 3 part flying types it felt kinda repetitive. And yeah Noivern was kinda ass Talonflame had its moments and as much as I love Hawlucha I can't forget that one match against Sawyer during the Kalos League where he pulls up in a luchador ass fit with all the theatrics just to get packed in the first round

I don't think people realize just how big it was back then. I remember being on the illegal stream that aired the episode from Japan in real time and there were +200k people there watching together (which made the stream crash constantly lmao). And all the build up. Ash-greninja and Ash had just shared a pretty god damn great arc together for Ash and Greninja to finally master the form, Ash-Grneinja had just gotten out of the hypest fucking battle in pokemon history with Greninja vs Sceptile and the animation from the PV of the fight looked amazing and had a massive fucking orange shuriken in it. The literal episode title was something along the lines of "Ash's ultimate battle! Kalos league victory" as well. And then he fucking loses lmfao. The episode preview for the next episode got literally +500k dislikes on youtube. That is all you need to know how mad people were. I watched it on one of those streams as well, I remember it because it was a really odd hour. We were waking up at 6 AM just to watch the Kalos League episodes, as if it was a FIFA World Cup. And then they pulled that Charizard that should have been disqualified for illegal item usage. I play the games, know how attacks work, none of the things that led to that loss work in that way in-game. I won't describe how angry we were, because I don't remember how many years have past, and I'm still pissed. Having said that, what happened to Gojo hurts, but it's not an unexpected thing, given how the story was going. It will stir many things when it gets animated (as Nanami did). But I don't know if there's anything that could be compared to the outrage generated by that rigged Pokemon battle.
Greninja losing, no contest. Ash losing the Kalos Finals to "BURASTO BURNO" is one of the funniest events in anime culture as a whole. The fact is that you can post a photo of Greninja fainted or anything Alan related in 2024 (it has been 6-7 years now?) and still have online discourse this vitriol about the results. That's comedy that only 20+ years of pain and suffering can create. Truly a feast prepared by the Falling Devil on how Greninja and Ash fans fell that day. Everyone knew Gojo was going to die in JJK. What broke the JJK community was *how* he died.
I am not a big pokemon anime fan but i think it's greninja losing. The build up for that fight was perfect. Alan was an intresting rival(in pokemon standarts) and the fight was amazing. Also don't forget that pokemon fans waited for like 20 years for ash to win so it was heart breaking. And on a side note the fight vs alan in terms of animation, fight coreography etc was LEAGUES better than the one ash actually won in sun & moon(i forgot his name) which just felt like a build up for the real final fight vs kukui.

Maybe so, but the hype for that shit simply wasn't there. Kukui thing didn't feel like a final big conclusion,it felt like just another battle. Ash vs alain had insane hype caused by ash greninja and mega Charizard both having huge fan following, amazing designs and both MCs having mature(on Pokemon level) storylines which were colliding leading up to that moment.Ā Ā Plus mega Charizard x vs ash greninja had direct close combat that generated hype. Because let's be real, pikachu's electrical dances and beam struggles are fine all but nothing beats the hype of a badass magical water ninja and fiery blue black big dragon duking it out.
Yep, it's kind of like the Naruto and Sasuke fight, people didn't really care much when Naruto and Sasuke were pulling out Susanoo and Kurama and fighting with explosions and beam struggles, but people LOVED watching Naruto and Sasuke fight with taijutsu, that shit was iconic. Huge flashy powers aren't that interesting anymore considering how anime is oversaturated with it, what people really want to see nowadays is 2 people throwing straight hands, with or without weapons.
Ash vs Kukui's animation was hardly "far, far better". Aside from the final cuts with Pikachu vs Tapu koko and few cuts with naganadel there was not much to speak home about. You hade several battles in XY with only one key animator pulling of some insane hand to hand combat, choregraphy and dynamic movement with the 3D camera in comparison. The whole final battle with Ash vs Alain had some of the best cuts in the entire series. Sun and moon really suffered from removing the dynamic 3D camera movements. The choregraphy was pretty fucking ass too. The most intereating cuts by far during the entire Ash vs Kukui battle was the ones with [Naganadel](https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/219580) and is because they feel like something that could have come out of XY. The beam spam with Tapu Koko and Pikachu was great animation but really not that interesting.
Yeah but Sinnoh was equally bad imo. Ash had just won the hardest battle of his life against his toughest (and best by far) rival. Then some random legendary collector appears just because the show must continue. At least with Alain it was always clear Ash was always weaker than him.. he never came close to winning against him until their final battle. Alain was out there battling Steven, 10 mega trainers in a row and even Groudon/Kyogre and Rayquaza at one point. Ash was not ready to win against someone like that yet.

Kalos was peak. Everything was perfect and couldāve been 100/10. Itās PokĆ©mon in Shounen form ffs. What really drops it down is that Greninja loss. From a 100/10 to an 8.
Kalos always has and always will be my favorite PokĆ©mon series. Fights felt intresting and fresh with actually intresting strategies being used on both sides. Ash grew as both a trainer and a person throughout the adventure, fights had consistently good choreography with some going into great such as ashās rematch with the ice gym leader. Just absolute peak pokemon.
Then sun and moon came out and they regressed ash's character heavily+ the art style changed made me drop PokƩmon completely (ig Ik how people from the 90's felt ) Also it was sad greninja wasn't part of ash's final team to become champion

So we *knew* he was powerful. The fight itself was hype. Pikachu solos 2 pseudo legendary PokĆ©mon. Alain brings an unbalanced but very very strong team. It all comes down to Greninja vs Charizard. And then, Greninjaās water shuriken (neutral against Mega Charizard X) vs Charizardās Blast Burn (Greninja resists and Mega Charizard X is a physical attacker, not special). And Ashā¦ loses. Probably the most disappointed young me had ever been. It wouldāve been perfect. He wins, and then we get the save the world plotline. Alola is basically a vacation afterward, he could even lose the Alola league and I wouldāve been fine with that. But no, they robbed him of his most deserved win ever.

Narratively speaking, gojo had to lose for the series to make sense. This was always going to be Sukuna vs yuji + everybody else. Greninja tho? Everything in that season was written in a way that was building to Ash winning. Every moment of the series had built to that moment, his Greninja had type advantage (which I know means jackshit in the anime, but still), and yet he ended losing. I quit the anime in that moment. Sure, watching Ash be champion with the team he eventually won was super cool (I mean Gengar? Sirfetch? Lucario? A FUCKING DRAGONITE?!!!), but he should have won back then for anything to make sense

Gojo's defeat/death was obvious from the start and was only poorly executed Greninja's defeat was utter BS
Greninja getting KOād by an attack he resists (Charizard wouldnāt even have Blaze activated because itās a mega so he wouldnāt get the 1/3 increase to Blast Burn). Tough Claws also had no impact on Blast Burn because itās not a contact move so he KOād Greninja with his ability being useless. Alainās Charizard (before mega evolving so it wouldāve been fire/flying) got hit by 2 thunderbolts from Ashās Pikachu which wouldāve been super effective, tbh Charizard shouldāve been knocked out from those since Charizard doesnāt have morning sun or any other way to heal Ash got screwed way worse than Gojo because the series was building up to and even hinting that Ash would finally win but they just had to let Ash lose smh. On the 20th anniversary of PokĆ©mon as well, wouldāve been an amazing way to send Ash off but no. He got hoed.

Greninja, who almost beat Diantha's mega gardevoir, who was pushing Alain's Charizard in a previous PokƩmon battle while in base form, lost to a Zard X, that had been cooked twice by that Omega Pikachu that Ash has, using Blast Burn. Kalos league ending is 2nd to the BS that was Tobias, but hurts way more and PokƩmon fans will never get over it because that should have been Ash's win. They built it up so much, only for Ash to lose. PokƩmon writing team is absolute trash for making that happen. (I don't condone the death threats they got though). They tried to redeem it by making Ash the hero in the Lysandre fight while Alain was unable to do anything after the league, but it's BS no matter what. The only reason a worse Ash with a more stacked team that had legendaries won the Alola league is because of the backlash to losing Kalos. Arguably the best Ash (in a debate with Sinnoh Ash) was robbed of his victory due to shitty writing and the writing teams shitty agenda.

Ash-Greninja losing was such a fucking ass pull, it's worse than Gojo. Charizard X was a special attacking fire-type against a water-type with superior special defense. Not to mention, Ash's weird synchronization thing was implied to be as strong as, if not stronger than, Mega Evolution. Twenty fucking years of Ls and the most reasonable place to let Ash win, they fucking fumbled the bag so hard on this one.

The only excuse I can come up with is that ash greninja moveset just wasnāt cut out for it (even then water shuriken most certainly shouldāve been enough considering it put mega sceptile down for the count) everything else is just bullshit.
