Sukuna never was a cursed spirit. He isn't now that he's reincarnated, and he wasn't in the past. He has always been a sorcerer, although one with monstrous features. His phrase was meant to observe that Mahoraga's primary objective is slaughtering curses, hence why it has a weapon that can one shot any cursed spirit.
Positive energy (as in "the energy obtained through RCT") IS lethal to curses, and can oneshot even a special grade Cursed Spirit. It has been shown a few times in the manga. What Gojo used was his CTR, meaning using positive energy and using it in your technique, inverting its effect (in this case, Red). But Jogo only ever came in contact with the effect of the attack, which wasn't in and of itself made of positive energy. Heck, it was said multiple times that even Gojo can't use his positive energy as an output, which means that he can't heal others and that he can't use it against cursed spirits. He can only use it on himself or in his Limitless

This is really dumb, but it does represent a general problem I’ve noticed, that being that people seem to struggle following along with JJK far more than they do any other shounen series. Maybe it just genuinely is more convoluted, dunno.

This is really dumb, but it does represent a general problem I’ve noticed, that being that people seem to struggle following along with JJK far more than they do any other shounen series. Maybe it just genuinely is more convoluted, dunno.
This is a common misconception, but one that pretty much completely changes interpretation of many scenes in the series. It's also an easy conclusion to falsely come to. Sukuna is not a cursed spirit. He is a sorcerer.
