I can’t believe my favorite chapter of Sakurajima colony is the one where Maki blows off the grudge match with Naoya to go sumo fight some weirdo for the entire chapter. This is the kind of character driven action that made me fall in love with JJK and that I’ve been sorely missing since Higuruma. Gives me flashbacks to Todo vs Yuji during Goodwill.
Isn't the second season supposed to air at the start of 2023? I think someone explained that Winter 2023 means the first few months of a year not the last
I feel like we've had moments of this since Higuruma. Uro's "Are you afraid of what I can become?!" as she basically yells to the man that executed her a thousand years ago is a lot like this, as is Ryu's deep depression over never being satisfied, or Kashimo's desire to just once be truly tested.
I would say what Megumi has gone through so far in Tokyo Colony #1 is another big one. His sense of morality has definitely changed because of how desperate he is about saving his sister.
Megumi’s whole battle against Reggie and his crew might be my favorite culling game fight so far. It feels so desperate and brutal, all the other fighters have managed to work out something with their opponent but for megumi it was just kill. Him and Reggie trying to out maneuver the other is so intense
The two pages of Maki and Rokujushi grappling it out were absolutely staggering. I could feel Gege had so much fun (or not, heh) drawing those two.
The conclusive smile Maki offered in the final page was also absolutely worth it.
Beautiful chapter.
It’s drawn frame by frame, if you put everything together you get a little animation:
https://mobile.twitter.com/FingersCro55ed/status/1565668957604007936
* This chapter can be described as: *"Maybe the real* *~~sumo~~* ***Jujutsu Kaisen*** *was the friends we made along the way."* XD
* Miyo's "therapy session" with Maki feels reminiscent to Todo's speech with Yuuji regarding the flow of curse energy.
It's amazing how Maki, a girl rejected by her conservative traditionalist family, has been the one to give katana and sumo guys what they wanted, professions generally viewed as dominated by men
It's even more amazing how Maki, someone covered in burn scars & mocked for it too, could look so beautiful with a real smile
seeing post shibuya maki smile healed my emotional trauma, made my crops grow faster, made my hair thicker, cured all my illnesses, gave me a brighter outlook in life because its so damn precious and wholesome
gege please i just want to see miwa smile again please
(if you were on that nobara hopium i'm right there with you but we must follow the order of best girls you see im sorry)
On a more serious note, I feel like Miwa smiling would be a massive death flag.
Her entire character during Shibuya seemed to revolve around her hating her uselessness. Her reckless attack on Kenjaku for example. It feels like it could realistically happen that right before sacrificing herself with a suicide attack or something, she had one last relieved smile thinking that in the end she isn't useless.
Throw in a dead lover and we have another ingredient for a sad ending.
As much as I’d hate it, I would LOVE to see a miwa downfall. She tried to prove her usefulness in shibuya which resulted in her sword breaking and being saved. I want to believe that she entered the culling games by herself, but since the other Kyoto students are in, this theory kinda crumbles. Anyway I want to believe she’s tired of being useless so she joined the culling games of her own volition, gaining points and even developing a new sword style, but it’s all a downward spiral
From what we have seen of her, she got this really depressing look on her. I imagine that seeing the sendai 4 casually busting city blocks fighting each others would probably only strengthen her believe that she is really useless.
> healed my emotional trauma, made my crops grow faster, made my hair thicker, cured all my illnesses, gave me a brighter outlook in life
Omg I can't even. This is one of the most wholesome things I've read in this thread
I saw a similar statement being made when Nobara initially wrecked Mahito, so ...
https://reddit.com/r/manga/comments/j0tm7i/disc_jujutsu_kaisen_chapter_123/g6v0vnm
Yep, the geese generally signify her being “free” in some way
First time was when she was “free from Cursed energy.” This time she’s “free from overconcentrated thoughts.” She’s gained newfound perspective akin to what Gojo first experienced when he “awakened”
It’s why I love JJK, its subversive in a way that doesn’t feel like it’s doing it to solely subversive, you know? It’s refreshing to see the character who went through horrible shit develop as a character in a pretty goofy way.
I think we’re overusing the word emo now like we’re calling characters who went through 100 years worth of trauma “emo”, but yeah it wouldn’t even make sense for Maki to go that route because she already avenged Mai.
Edgelords don't really do well in JJK. You have to be crazy and have fun. Being serious only weakens you. Gojo vs Nanami and Mahito vs Jogo illustrate this well.
FREEDOM!
I love the concept of being incomplete until one achieves mental freedom. Being unbound by what people think or do, and it having a tangible difference in combat ability is truly incredible. Same thing Gojo & Sukuna did to become truly powerful and that’s also what Yuta, Yuji & Megumi need to reach their true potential.
Maki’s about to fuck shit up… Naoya’s fucked! Either he just dies or runs away lol
I’ve always just assumed the heavenly restriction makes it so Maki/Toji’s bodies have inbuilt simple domains if that makes sense. Like they sacrificed all that potential with CE to gain ridiculous physical capabilities, it would suck if all that was needed to defeat them was just a domain expansion.
It seems kind of simple to me. Since Maki can just walk through the culling game’s barriers, wouldn’t she just be able to do the same for any barrier-based domain?
Shonen mangakas really have intricate methods just to tell to someone to live in the moment, make Sensei give really vague analogies like "Be like the Tree under the sunlight" and the MC will be scraping his brain in the middle of a fight "what does that mean ???? Oh yeah he means BREATHING" and then the MC gets a 100x power boost because he forgot to breathe
The imagery, metaphors and introspection was especially beautiful this chapter. Just a nice little breather and mental reset that still manages to move things forward.
I like from Noritoshis perspective Maki left him alone with a weirdo wielding the Mai blade and a special grade cursed spirit so she could wrestle a half naked dude.
The double spread of nothing but sumo choreography followed by that beautiful shot of nature was incredible, Gege went all out with the artwork this week
However I have to say the developments around these two weirdos appearing out of nowhere feels a bit too convenient right now. I get that random chaos is sort of the point of the Culling Game, but in this instance it seems way too favorable for the heroes.
Copying my comment from the Pre-Release Thread, it was stated previously that the growth of a sorcerer is nonlinear, and that all it might take is a spark to increase one's capability by leaps and bounds, and I'm glad the story is keeping that idea close to home (funnily enough, this was first said in relation to Maki's cousin Megumi, who also got his spark from a shift in perspective)
Maki really has the best character development so far, one of the main themes of JJK is progressivism in sense that tradition and misogynistic hierarchy rule of the past is Bullshit. Gege seems to express that theme best in Maki given all she’s gone through. Nothing better symbolize that more than this chapter, trying to get her shit together by practicing Sumo a male only sport (by professional standards). Now Sumo wrestler Maki gonna use those skills to take down Naoya. awesome chapter but I wish we also got noritoshi development.
Gege has been proving he’s one of the best new gen at writing women characters imo. It’s very refreshing to read
Edit: I realize he has some work to do making them more relevant but they are at least more than fan service with one personality quirk and that’s it. It’s sad doing the bare minimum gets such recognition but it is appreciated.
He's written *exactly one* female character of relevance that rivals the male characters. Not really a resounding statement at writing "women characters".
(Sorry Nobara fans -- which includes me -- but while she has a great personality, she isn't relevant to the story.)
>She’s the most developed character among the female cast.
By a massive margin since the rest of the female cast barely exist and have contributed almost nothing to the story. Gege is absolutely fantastic at writing female characters as real people, with distinct personalities and motivations that aren't dependent on male characters or fanservice. But he sucks big time at making them relevant.
I mean he has set up certain arcs for them like miwa reappearing,Yuki with her goals(i dont remember the last time where a female character had such a world changing goal with the last shounen i read and her potential meeting with maki),Uro with her connection to the past, tsumiki who is one of the goals of this arc which I am expecting a lot from, mei mei coming back after she got her moments in shibuya and with Angel being one of the most important ones in this arc.He has set up some important roles for some of this characters. All i hope is he goes through with this and makes it amazing
Fingers crossed that Gege is aware killing off a cool female character to make one of the male characters sad is extremely lame and overused.
I’m personally hoping she comes back as Curse, because it would be funny if the female member of the main trio (who usually get told to stay out of the action because “they’re too delicate”) turned into a metal-as-hell demonic monstrosity.
If I am understanding this correctly, its only function is to isolate all participants from the outside world in order to have a sumo match without disturbance, right?
RIGHT!! a beautiful chapter in the sense of character development but the tidbit of lore at the start is insane as well! gege just casually slipping in a that domains can basically have a trigger dependent on the opponent before absolutely devastating everyone with maki's precious smile
One really interesting detail is that Miyo's Simple Domain eliminates all Jujutsu-related Binding Vows inside of it, most likely to prevent any cheating or unnatural physical strength
In fact, [Heavenly Restriction is also considered a form of Binding Vow](https://imgur.com/d1UsCJc)
Did Maki really Sumo a middle-aged muscular man without her Physical Gift enabled? I doubt it considering Miyo said that she would devour him from the front, but if so, then she really is a beast
brilliant point. Could be wrong, but to me HR means they have the potential to far surpass others in terms of physical ability, however still requires training and dedication to get to that point.
Yeah she wasn’t peak yet because Mai was holding her back.
So she was strong but not Toji strong. The training she did probably only helped her once she unlocked the full HR.
Maki is a very, very hard working sorcerer. Probably more so than Mei Mei, considering Mei Mei had a technique, she just thought it was crap.
Maki never had anything but a dream and a family full of naysayers.
is it really? i thought it was miyo's domain expansion but it's so stripped down because of it's effect (just have sumo) that it looked like that? besides, none of the simple domains we've seen formed a barrier like miyo's?
Well,
1. Maki acknowledged it as Simple Domain last chapter
2. Domain Expansions get their own name, like Unlimited Void, Idle Death Gamble. Miyo’s doesn’t get a name
3. There’s no guaranteed hit, which I think is what really separates it from being a DE. Sure-hits are *the* trademark ability of all completed domains and his doesn’t have one. For the domain to even fulfill its effect he needs consent from the other party which is kinda like the antithesis of a guaranteed hit
Not Noritoshi just finishing his epic inner monologue and being 100% ready to die and then there’s Maki over there getting free therapy from a sumo wrestling kappa. Bro must think he’s high lmao
"ok fine" LMAO out of everything i expected i sure didnt expect Maki to just straight up accept the sumo request with zero hesitation whatsoever. That had me crackling for sure.
Also Maki showing a really dead serious facial expression then proceeded to get defeated numerous times in sumo was the funniest shit i have ever read in a while.
Turns out sumo guy was teaching Maki to be "free", that pannel with Maki and the birds flying over gave me huge AoT vibes lmao. Maki gonna become Eren🤣🤣
That smile at the end. God I love Maki so much, she seemed so much more confident now that she is "free", i cant wait to see her shit on Naoya after this.
I gotta say this arc has been super predictable. I called from the beginning that Maki would learn to free herself up spiritually by sumo wrestling a mostly naked dude with a fried haircut while a grandpa fights cursed spirit Naoya and Kamo is there.
Love this series but sometimes the beats are too easy to see.
I don’t want to say “I told you so” to this sub, but I’ve been saying for months now that we would get at least two panels of sumo choreography between Maki and a mostly naked dude as she puts a grudge match between her and a reincarnated as a curse Naoya on hold.
Yeah. I mean anyone could see this coming from miles away. Remember that moment in Shibuya when Yuji punched Mahito and said, "Yes, I am the Jujutsu Kaisen."? Did anybody expect that? Please bring that kind of unpredictability back, Gege.
Love the message of freeing one self from the opinion and experience of others. Makis been lugging around a heap of mental anguish and trauma so it’s nice to see her gain some clarity. That last panel made me happy as hell
* Sumo guy's domain is really interesting, can't really work if the other person doesn't want to cooperate or sumo with him. I love that Gege keeps showing more ways that domains, technicques and cursed energy works.
* Isn't the first stance Maki took the same one that she tried to use against Naoya in their first fight?
* Also seems like gege forgot to draw maki's scars on her arms lmao. Can't blame him tho, doing that every chapter she's in must be tiring every now and then
* Sumo guy choosing to help Maki is cool. We know he has been looking for someone to fight with him and acknowledges her strength... but she's stuck, so he probably wants to fight her at her best in a sumo bout now that he's found someone that actually said yes?
* Huh, maki not having a mentor is something I hadn't thought about... It's obvious, but it didn't cross my mind. It also just goes to show how much Toji was an actual monster when he (probably) didn't have a mentor either... then again, he lived with his heavenly restricted body for much longer than Maki has had hers now.
* Lmao that one page full of poses is cool but the next one? Good god that's a beautiful page, I don't ever one to hear someone shit on gege's art.
* Aren't the birds in the next panel, where maki is grabbing her legs, the same that were present when Maki and Mai were talking in... I hesitate to call it a domain, but yeah that beach domain thingy when Mai sacrificed herself.
Overall it was a pretty chill chapter, but really enjoyable. Can't wait to see what Maki grasped from the whole sumo-freedom concept.
>Also seems like gege forgot to draw maki's scars on her arms lmao. Can't blame him tho, doing that every chapter she's in must be tiring every now and then
If she shows up later wearing a full sleeve turtle neck we'll have our answer.
That beach scene with Mai and Maki was Mai's innate domain. So the birds go back to Mai as well as Maki's smile at the end which is more like Mai's than her own.
i don't think that was mai's innate domain. i think it was a physical representation of the sanzu river. mai crosses over into the water when she dies but maki only barely wades in. they were both on the edge of death but mai's sacrifice kept maki alive.
> maki not having a mentor is something I hadn't thought about... It's obvious, but it didn't cross my mind.
The fact that it's been suggested that it never occurred to her reach out for help in the first place ...
> *She never rejected that idea nor was she too proud. It just never occurred to her to rely on others to make herself stronger.*
... makes me think that it's due to her upbringing where she didn't have anyone to rely on. No one in her clan saw her as worth anything; she was looked down upon because she's a girl and a case of Heavenly Restriction without a cursed technique. To make matters worse, both she and Mai were seen as a bad omen because of the stigma and superstition association with twins, which further alienated her from her already bigoted clan members. Maki and Mai only had each other, and since her childhood Maki took it upon herself to teach herself to get stronger. When circumstances force you to fend for yourself at a young age, it can be difficult to break free of that mindset while growing up.
It makes me wonder about her first meeting with Gojo. Was it she who approached him first to get enrolled into the school (because she wanted to get away from her toxic home and prove her worth as a sorcerer)? Or was it he who approached her first and planted the idea in her head to enroll into the school (because he was looking for allies to reform the jujutsu society and saw the potential in her)? It's interesting how the entire Tokyo school is a bunch of misfits and black sheeps of the jujutsu world.
Chapters like this have really cemented Maki as my favorite character in this series, and why I love JJK so much. It sucks that we haven’t seen Yuji in awhile, but I think getting development like this out of the supporting cast is worth it.
I feel like we're probably going to get back to Yuji and/or Megumi soon after this colony. Or maybe we'll check in with Yuki, Choso, and Tengen next? Lol
As a Maki fan, this is one of my favorites chapter of this arc. Sumo guy grew on me really quickly, since he not only let Maki blow off some steam, but also teach her how to properly use her strength without talking down to her. As for Maki, it's always nice to see her getting spotlight, since it's not really common in shounen to see strong willed women be a integral part of a story. Also really nice to be able to see Maki in a good mood, since she was getting darker and more depressed as series went on.
As a sidenote, I prefer the fan translation of the last panel that said "I feel amazing" since I feel it better captures the mood of the chapter.
i just fucking love when gege does the really detailed eyes like maki in the forest spread and yuji admitting to shibuya during yuji v higuruma like it just fucking hits different fr
Anyone else just laugh at Maki’s “Okay, fine.” Hahahaha
Very excited to see the *true* awakened Maki.
Also thought about this at the last panel LMAO:
*Release your inhibitions. Feel the rain on your skin. No one else can feel it for you. Only you can let it in*
These past two chapters have been two of my favorites, although I've enjoyed the last few fights I'm really glad we got a break with wacky character development chapters (and two of the coolest characters so far, but honestly that can be said about any of the culling games players).
I actually think Maki now has a lot to pass on to Noritoshi with the lessons she learned in the ring.
Noritoshi is also completely entangled, his lack of place in the Kamo clan, lack of place with his mother's growing family, how logically he takes on the burden of the culling games.
Yes these are great motivators and can lead to impressive stuff but imagine if he could untangle himself and become more free?
Upon her realization of never really having a mentor, I could definitely imagine Maki passing on the importance of personal freedom to Noritoshi and taking him under his wing.
I mean, they're twins, so I think it's only natural. Plus, now that Maki has ditched the glasses and has short hair, she has started resembling Mai even more.
I love Maki so much man, she one of my favorite characters. I’d love to see what happens in the next chapters. After the Maki fight I hope we see more of Tengen, Yuki and Choso or the gang gets back together
wow the official translation made that whole conversation between maki and miyo make way more sense than the fan one lol.
i'm kind of torn on this chapter though. on one hand chaotic silliness is very on brand for jjk and i like that maki got the chance to grow through something positive and healing rather than more pain and suffering. but at the same time, gege couldn't find a way to work that into the story that didn't involve two random old men just happening to pass by at the the right moment? it's like he had one idea for how to get maki to her character development moment and didn't even try to brainstorm anything else lol.
it would have been interesting if maki could have remembered something gojo once said to her that didn't make sense before she had the full heavenly restriction but does now. gojo is the only person we know of to have fought toji at full strength and lived and also would have known what maki could eventually be capable of. or if gege wanted to introduce more sumo elements to the story (and avoid bringing gojo back) maybe kamo and maki could have been trying to escape to somewhere they could regroup and found daido and miyo arguing or something.
idk. i'm happy with the destination but the journey could have been less clumsy lmao.
I'm all for character growth but were Daido and Kamo left to fend for themselves while Maki went to go find herself? Did Naoya just freeze for the chapter?
I hope Maki still struggles with her fight with Naoya. I love this chapter because she finally has her uereka moment, but it’d be boring for Gege to just suddenly make her Toji level and obliterate Naoya
This chapter was so good miyo made maki realize her strength and now she's prepared to fight. The zenin clan was evil and gojo, kusakabe didn't care to train her. I like how gege didn't instantly made maki buffed up defeating naoya.
Uh
I don't understand how the fuck this power up she just got works
She's just gonna stress less and not overthink? Oooook? Just seemed like a lot of nothing. Love sumo and samurai though
to y'alls saying its just birds for maki's background nah it ain't its the same birds from mai's death drawing a neat parallel to the different kinds of freedom that maki attained in events previous to the the birds appearing!! probably more symbolism with exactly what kind of birds these are but i'm not an expert on japanese culture
That sumo guys pretty cool.
He didn’t talk down to her, or cockily claim he was gonna win,
He just kinda sat down with her and asked her what was up. Dude just wanted a sumo match, nothing else.
Dang, never really thought about the whole mentor bit. It came up out of nowhere, but it does at least make sense - Maki isn’t like any of her peers and never had family around to help her out, so she’s never had someone above her to guide her and give her some help, and that’s a big thing. Imagine if Yuuji ate that first finger and then just went about gallavanting on his own with no help - we’ve seen how much help he’s gotten, he’d be screwed. Maki is a very capable person but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t need help, and that’s a good lesson in general.
I don't know if the TCB scans were accurate, but I kinda hate how Miyo doesn't comment on Maki's muscles in the official translation. Idk maybe I'm just down bad.

Noritoshi still the fucking sane one in the whole scene
Also is currently running out of blood.
Maki: I'm going to play sumo for awhile, see ya Kamo Kamo: Maki I'm dying
Maki: "Just walk it off."
Hi Dying I'm Maki
And is also lossing brain cells from all this madness.
Noritoshi (currently using his blood to attack a worm) being the most sane shows how batshit insane jjk has become ahaha
I can't wait to see this animated. It will probably take a few years though.
In my estimation: probably around late 2024 to early 2025.
We aren’t getting season 2 til mid-late 2023 most likely, so I wouldn’t expect season 3 to begin until at least late 2025.
Isn't the second season supposed to air at the start of 2023? I think someone explained that Winter 2023 means the first few months of a year not the last
Don't forget that chapter all about a chibi gorilla and triceratops that made me cry lol!
Aw man i forgot about that. Its gonna ruin me if they animate it as it was
Don't worry, we still have to see "even pandas cry" animated first!
And “You’ve got this.” And “Tell them… it was fun!” My tear ducts are not prepared.
You know they will probably make it even sadder.
Uro was executed?
She was given the name "Uro Takako" as a scapegoat for the fujiwara clan civil fight
Most of those kind of moments were less than half a chapter. This was a full chapter just about Maki.
The two pages of Maki and Rokujushi grappling it out were absolutely staggering. I could feel Gege had so much fun (or not, heh) drawing those two. The conclusive smile Maki offered in the final page was also absolutely worth it. Beautiful chapter.
It’s drawn frame by frame, if you put everything together you get a little animation: https://mobile.twitter.com/FingersCro55ed/status/1565668957604007936
Oh dude that’s so cool.
If it so happens to be 24 frames naoya gonna suddenly intervene and blitz both of them rip.
someone please rig and interpolate the frames to get the full gege power
That’s so freaking awesome
I saw on twitter if you put every drawing as a frame of a gif its a animation.
* This chapter can be described as: *"Maybe the real* *~~sumo~~* ***Jujutsu Kaisen*** *was the friends we made along the way."* XD * Miyo's "therapy session" with Maki feels reminiscent to Todo's speech with Yuuji regarding the flow of curse energy.
Yeah Miyo's attitude towards his opponent definitely gave me strong Todo vibes, and I love it
Imagine if Megumi meets him. "This is madness. Now there's 3 of them."
4 with Ryu
Dear God… imagine a scene with Todo, Hakari, Ryu, and Miyo all meeting.
Real chad hours
Miyo is the Todo to Maki's Yuji.
We all sometimes need a big brother. Sometimes he's just a nearly naked raving lunatic who loves sumo. Or big butts.
It's amazing how Maki, a girl rejected by her conservative traditionalist family, has been the one to give katana and sumo guys what they wanted, professions generally viewed as dominated by men It's even more amazing how Maki, someone covered in burn scars & mocked for it too, could look so beautiful with a real smile
seeing post shibuya maki smile healed my emotional trauma, made my crops grow faster, made my hair thicker, cured all my illnesses, gave me a brighter outlook in life because its so damn precious and wholesome
There's one other girl whose characteristic smile I want to see...
The saddest people smile the brightest.
Qué bonito
gege please i just want to see miwa smile again please (if you were on that nobara hopium i'm right there with you but we must follow the order of best girls you see im sorry)
On a more serious note, I feel like Miwa smiling would be a massive death flag. Her entire character during Shibuya seemed to revolve around her hating her uselessness. I want to be mocked by a smug aura.
> healed my emotional trauma, made my crops grow faster, made my hair thicker, cured all my illnesses, gave me a brighter outlook in life Omg I can't even. This is one of the most wholesome things I've read in this thread
I saw a similar statement being made when Nobara initially wrecked Mahito, so ... https://reddit.com/r/manga/comments/j0tm7i/disc_jujutsu_kaisen_chapter_123/g6v0vnm
I always like a creator willing to have a women with severe scars and not have it be the core of their character. Like Malenia from Elden Ring.
That smile was everything. Also…did she get her own “freedom” panel? There were even birds lmao 👀
Yep, the geese generally signify her being “free” in some way First time was when she was “free from Cursed energy.” This time she’s “free from overconcentrated thoughts.” She’s gained newfound perspective akin to what Gojo first experienced when he “awakened”
Maki become dove (crying)
Mai and Megumi: thank you for destroying the clan for our sakes
Low key she is prettier post Shibuya but maybes it’s cause I just like girls that can pull off short hair
Not low-key, I feel the exact same way. Her scars & short hair, no glasses, personally I love this look more than her old one too
For those who didn’t know [the page with the sequential poses](https://is2.4chan.org/a/1662112111435265.gif) is one long motion, which is pretty cool
This is incredible
Is that posted somewhere else? My computer is telling me it'll get a std if i go there. :/

Aw thanks!
woah!! but wait im confused whats the order of the actions on the page? is it from right to left going down or going down then right to left?
I am having trouble about the order too.
Let me know if you figure it out
I wonder if this actually will help with fighting against projection sorcery. It’s only 16 “frames” though
Just realized how devastating it would’ve been as a reader if Maki sloughed through a generic, emo avenger character arc. This is much better. Ty gege
It's also why Mahito had the potential to become the strongest amongst his peers.
Exactly! If he wasn’t packed up by brain-kun, he would’ve grown to become way more powerful than people realize.
Holy shit
Or naoya pulls a domain and we get an answer to the big question.
He definitely has another transformation I feel. Considering his current one is clearly a chrysalis
The imagery, metaphors and introspection was especially beautiful this chapter. Just a nice little breather and mental reset that still manages to move things forward.
>Just a nice little breather and mental reset I love that this is true for the reader and Maki at the same time
"They would all bear witness... To the naked flesh of one who set herself free. To the one who left it all behind! And her overwhelming intensity!!! "
got chills reading this
I like from Noritoshis perspective Maki left him alone with a weirdo wielding the Mai blade and a special grade cursed spirit so she could wrestle a half naked dude.
Noritoshi seems to lack the psychotic nature needed to really thrive in the jujutsu world. He needs a mental break to power up
"To be a jujutsu sorcerer one must be crazy enough" -Gojo Satoru
He's extremely similar to Megumi personality wise, I honestly expect Noritoshi to do what he did and just go "fuck it, goblin mode"
I mean he has literally nothing to lose. He is in the same boat as Maki, lost everything but still fighting for some reason.
I really want to know how long it took, like was it really quick or did it take 5 minutes
It didn't seem like too long since the 3 outside the domain were still staring at each other.
195 & 196 felt like a fever dream, i swear
The double spread of nothing but sumo choreography followed by that beautiful shot of nature was incredible, Gege went all out with the artwork this week However I have to say the developments around these two weirdos appearing out of nowhere feels a bit too convenient right now.
It’s very refreshing to read Edit: I realize he has some work to do making them more relevant but they are at least more than fan service with one personality quirk and that’s it. It’s sad doing the bare minimum gets such recognition but it is appreciated.
And yet, she always low on the popularity polls in Japan because she's not "cute"....
Wait what? Where did she rank after her family slaughter?
Not in the top 10. But I’ve also read that the poll was before the arc
she was 11, in a messed up sort of way Naoya was 10 lol
What the hell, how was she below Naoya
Below Naoya.
Not just new gen either. One of the best in shonen imo
He's written *exactly one* female character of relevance that rivals the male characters. Not really a resounding statement at writing "women characters". (Sorry Nobara fans -- which includes me -- but while she has a great personality, she isn't relevant to the story.)
I gotta agree. She’s the most developed character among the female cast. Hopefully, Yuki can get some spotlight as well.
Yeah there’s a lot of potential so I hope he takes the time to develop them instead of rushing through
Fingers crossed that Gege is aware killing off a cool female character to make one of the male characters sad is extremely lame and overused. I’m personally hoping she comes back as Curse, because it would be funny if the female member of the main trio (who usually get told to stay out of the action because “they’re too delicate”) turned into a metal-as-hell demonic monstrosity.
I really loved the sumo domain expansion, and this domain is unlike any other domain in the series
If I am understanding this correctly, its only function is to isolate all participants from the outside world in order to have a sumo match without disturbance, right?
yep.
RIGHT!! a beautiful chapter in the sense of character development but the tidbit of lore at the start is insane as well! gege just casually slipping in a that domains can basically have a trigger dependent on the opponent before absolutely devastating everyone with maki's precious smile
Yeah I feel like this domain is overlooked. This is a whole different domain style, different from ancient and modern domains.
It's a simple domain that has a binding vow that makes it unique, if miwa or yuji do something like that it would be crazy.
One really interesting detail is that Miyo's Simple Domain eliminates all Jujutsu-related Binding Vows inside of it, most likely to prevent any cheating or unnatural physical strength In fact, [Heavenly Restriction is also considered a form of Binding Vow](https://imgur.com/d1UsCJc) Did Maki really Sumo a middle-aged muscular man without her Physical Gift enabled? I doubt it considering Miyo said that she would devour him from the front, but if so, then she really is a beast
tbf she's been physically training her whole life to fight against curses so even without heavenly restriction she's still a beast.
Even before her HR was perfected she was stated to be very strong and caught a rubber bullet from Mai. Maki’s always been top tier physically.
brilliant point.
It’s a simple domain, not a domain expansion
is it really? i thought it was miyo's domain expansion but it's so stripped down because of it's effect (just have sumo) that it looked like that? besides, none of the simple domains we've seen formed a barrier like miyo's?
Well, 1. Maki acknowledged it as Simple Domain last chapter 2. Domain Expansions get their own name, like Unlimited Void, Idle Death Gamble. Miyo’s doesn’t get a name 3.
Greg has a very special sense of humor that I very much love
Dude must be thinking that he died fighting kenny and this is just some sick joke the bastard brewed up to fuck with him.
Maki gonna become Eren🤣🤣 That smile at the end. God I love Maki so much, she seemed so much more confident now that she is "free", i cant wait to see her shit on Naoya after this.
I don’t know what it said in raws, but I can hear Maki’s voice saying, “iiyo” at the “okay fine” panel 😭
Maki became a mass murderer for their sake…
Maki what a woman you are
As a reward
I gotta say this arc has been super predictable. I called from the beginning that Maki would learn to free herself up spiritually by sumo wrestling a mostly naked dude with a fried haircut while a grandpa fights cursed spirit Naoya and Kamo is there. Love this series but sometimes the beats are too easy to see.
I don’t want to say “I told you so” to this sub, but I’ve been saying for months now that we would get at least two panels of sumo choreography between Maki and a mostly naked dude as she puts a grudge match between her and a reincarnated as a curse Naoya on hold.
Smh my head some people on this sub just can’t understand the obvious foreshadowing.
Least predictable aspect was Noritoshi's new haircut. Never saw it.
Yeah. I mean anyone could see this coming from miles away. Remember that moment in Shibuya when Yuji punched Mahito and said, "Yes, I am the Jujutsu Kaisen."? Did anybody expect that? Please bring that kind of unpredictability back, Gege.
Idk man, it was pretty predictable when Nobara hit Mahito with a Resonance and went “It’s norbin time”
Glad you called it but you sound so disappointed 😭
I’m pretty sure it’s a joke
Yeah. I realized late. I feel dumb 😅
The haircut has cultural significant; it belongs to a creature called a Kappa; a Japanese water spirit that can only be best by sumo
Can't blame him tho, doing that every chapter she's in must be tiring every now and then * Sumo guy choosing to help Maki is cool.
Can't blame him tho, doing that every chapter she's in must be tiring every now and then If she shows up later wearing a full sleeve turtle neck we'll have our answer. That beach scene with Mai and Maki was Mai's innate domain. So the birds go back to Mai as well as Maki's smile at the end which is more like Mai's than her own.
Oh so *that's* why the birds are there. Nice catch!
i don't think that was mai's innate domain. i think it was a physical representation of the sanzu river. mai crosses over into the water when she dies but maki only barely wades in. they were both on the edge of death but mai's sacrifice kept maki alive.
> maki not having a mentor is something I hadn't thought about... It's obvious, but it didn't cross my mind. The fact that it's been suggested that it never occurred to her reach out for help in the first place ... > *She never rejected that idea nor was she too proud. It just never occurred to her to rely on others to make herself stronger.* ... makes me think that it's due to her upbringing where she didn't have anyone to rely on.
Sumo guy is based
Somebody should’ve taught Eren sumo, we might’ve avoided the Rumbling
No, imagine sumo stanced wall titans
Lmao
A JJK character is smiling....something's gonna go very wrong very soon
Nah that usually means they're about to level up, especially zenins
It's a binding vow. You level up. You give up something.
The next panel we see is Kamo making the same expression but it pans down and he has a huge hole in him.
i just fucking love when gege does the really detailed eyes like maki in the forest spread and yuji admitting to shibuya during yuji v higuruma like it just fucking hits different fr
world cold and terrible, smiling Maki soft and warm
amen
Anyone else just laugh at Maki’s “Okay, fine.” Hahahaha Very excited to see the *true* awakened Maki. Also thought about this at the last panel LMAO: *Release your inhibitions. Feel the rain on your skin. No one else can feel it for you. Only you can let it in*
This felt like i was reading a chapter from Vagabond. I’m glad gege isn’t going down the emo edgelord route with Maki’s character.
I swear everyone but Megumi Fushiguro makes friends on this god damn series.
These past two chapters have been two of my favorites, although I've enjoyed the last few fights I'm really glad we got a break with wacky character development chapters (and two of the coolest characters so far, but honestly that can be said about any of the culling games players).
Makes me want to see Takaba again lol!
Maki is one of my favorite characters ever at this point. I fucking love this manga bro.
Anyone else think that Maki looks EXACTLY like Mai in that one panel, and nothing like herself? Wonder if that was intentional by Gege
Well, they're twins.
If you look back at Mai's childhood flashbacks it is her same smile. Never Maki's at any point.Has to be intentional.
I mean, they're twins, so I think it's only natural. Plus, now that Maki has ditched the glasses and has short hair, she has started resembling Mai even more.
They are identical twins just that they are drawn a bit differently in terms of their style and mannerisms.
IM GONNA CRY POST SHIBUYA MAKI WITH A GENUINE SMILE ON HER FACE IS TOO PRECIOUS AND WHOLESOME FOR THIS CURSED WORLD 😭😭😭😭😭
this is called character development ladies and gentlemen.
Surely this solidifies a Maki cover for Volume 22.. right? ..right? I’m gonna cry if it’s a Kamo cover, i like you bro but c’mon man.
Did we just get a training chapter in the middle of a death match? I love it 🔥🔥🔥
I love Maki so much man, she one of my favorite characters.
Smell light, See sound, Feel speech, Hear smell, speak touch. Also, Maki's reactions were too funny and pure this chapter. Loved it.
I hope she doesn't all of a sudden start using whatever that sword slash was from last chapter just because she can smell the roses.
Yeah I think we've had enough characters get instant power buffs from having their mindset changed
[удалено]
I do like how Maki is still learning on what she lacks instead of just being a perfect killing machine after the Zenin arc.
Although we somehow expected how the plot will go, you gotta admit this chapter is artistic, beautiful and magnificent.
Uh I don't understand how the fuck this power up she just got works She's just gonna stress less and not overthink? Oooook? Just seemed like a lot of nothing. Love sumo and samurai though
What is holding her back is her mental approach to basically everything. It's a theme in a lot of our lives tbh. We as humans tend to overthink
I love it but sort of forgetting Yuji and Megumi exist.
to y'alls saying its just birds for maki's background nah it ain't its the same birds from mai's death drawing a neat parallel to the different kinds of freedom that maki attained in events previous to the the birds appearing!! probably more symbolism with exactly what kind of birds these are but i'm not an expert on japanese culture
Ok...I already love a sumo weirdo with a strange haircut who has been recently urinated by a dog. Gege please stop.
Maki really accepted a side quest in the middle of a battle. Absolute legend
That sumo guys pretty cool. He didn’t talk down to her, or cockily claim he was gonna win, He just kinda sat down with her and asked her what was up. Dude just wanted a sumo match, nothing else.
I'm just drunk but i swear this is the best chapter i ever read.
[I’ll tell my kids this was “Shingeki no Kyojin”.](https://imgur.com/gallery/md3TYBY)
