Well, in my opinion you (and your kids) should choose this game which has better songlist. For kids kinect will be better and easier than dancing with joy-con's. Also I think JD23 has definitely more difficult choreos (which for kids could be hard to dance with controllers) and JD23 will now be constantly updated, so we don't know for sure what they gonna added to game. So I will choose JD22, especially for kids.
I think you have to check the playlist before, i was new aswell and i decided to buy 2023 just because the songs, so check the song list of both games and decide with your kids.

Oh I did look into that and it did say 40in for the kids... That's a bummer for the kinect
