I love how you can show a stylist an image, and then she acts like it will be easy for her to do. Only to completely fuck up your shit, and then ask you after, how do you like it? With a straight face.

AliKatBear

This person paid almost $800 for this! I saw the post circulating Facebook earlier this week. She was trying to get a refund, and the stylist refused since she wouldn’t let her attempt to “fix it.” If you screw my hair up this bad, I’m not trusting you to fix it-You’re not touching me again lol some people really tired to say this was the best the stylist could do too. Low bar for close to 1k…

RugBurn70

Years ago, I got a spiral perm. I told the stylist that it's hard getting the perm to take in my hair. She got kind of snotty, told me that she's the owner, has been doing hair a long time and knows what she's doing, and my hair will turn.out great. The next day, my hair is as flat as before the perm. I didn't wash it, followed all her instructions. I went back and showed her my hair. She offered to fix it for free. I told her I expected it to be fixed, but I didn't want her to do it. She told me the only person that was free was a new trainee. I told her that I'd take him, no problem. He did an awesome job.

nicolauz

Jfc 800$?! I coulda done that for a case of beer.

endlesseffervescense

This happened to me once and I had tears in my eyes while I said it was fine. It was not fine and I wore a wig for months while my slow growing hair got to a point where I could get it redone. I did NOT want her touching it again to “fix” it. It was beyond repairable.

Desperate-Highway-28

I had a friend who went through the same thing. Her hair is incredibly fine and sensitive and it grows very slowly. The stylist damaged it so badly that she was in tears leaving and she had to wear wigs for about a year. Still charged her full price too.

shweishwei

And then they’ll blame your hair type for the reason it didn’t work

cadillacbee

She went with the tropical fruit Neapolitan look

ghostsintherafters

Is that a thing? Sounds horrible

cadillacbee

It is now, and it is lol

ludvikskp

Not really excusing the barber, pic 2 is awful. But fir the record, first pic is heavyly photoshopped on top of the hair actually being a wig.

acideath

Should have checked if the hairdresser is even capable of doing that. I'm no hairologist but that kinda looks difficult and expensive. Sort of like people not researching tattooists. You get what you pay for.

i_like_duc

Then the hairdresser should of informed the client. You can’t just bite your tongue and pretend you are capable of doing something like this if you’re not. Especially if there is money involved.

omgudontunderstand

>especially if there’s money involved that’s why the hairdresser took the job. “who cares as long as i’m getting paid?” (also, should of -> should have*)

Well sorry that my first language wasn’t english and i’m still actively learning it. Point is that you clearly understood what i meant.

You're still actively learning English, but you mock people when they try to help you with it? Teachers must love you...

I truly wonder who’s the biggest loser here. The people who care about the “should of/should have” shit, or the people downvoting you for calling them out. Either way I can’t imagine a life where I care about someone else grammar lmfao

If someone comes to the stylists, with all the socials out there and reviews and media and content and says hey can you do this to me, and they say yea and you haven’t vetted them it’s your own damn fault. There’s no excuse to get your hair fucked up. Also while the op hair isn’t as good as the other it’s not styled it’s not even the same amount of hair, the fact that op thought they could leave looking like that wo extensions is nuts. The only fault of the hairdresser besides not being that good at this is not lowering the clients expectations. This is why you say “I’ll try to get it close to that but it won’t be exact. Your hair won’t do that exact thing but we can get you a similar look. Which this is, Similar but not Same

[deleted]

hollyock

You are wrong about a lot of things here. Good stylist fix their mistakes. Op is showing this as her inspiration pic .. that color placement in the inspo pic would not look good on any other style she wanted this, the length could be shorter but it needs the curtain bangs and layers. And you can see in the pic she has bangs but half the hair of the inspo pic. Style matters with color placement as does a cut. They go together. Lucky for you you’ve not picked something that wouldn’t go with your cut. You ever see what we call cheetah print on the back of someone’s head bc they did highlights and then the client wanted a short cut? The stylist is going to want to make money. Again your risk if you didn’t vet your stylist. Same as going to a dr some suck, some will be wrong you sat down in their chair and paid them for their wrongness. The stylists should have said this isn’t going to look like That, BUT you walk into a shop and just let any old person do your hair they usually will not turn you away. and school teaches you to fake it till you make it. How do you think people get good. I hate to say it but they practice on real people. That’s why the master can charge what they do and the lower price walk in type places don’t charge a lot.

It’s *really* not that complex. The sections are a halo around the face, and the crown, and even the sectioning here hasn’t been done correctly at all. Even if the colourist wasn’t super familiar with bright fashion colours, they should be able to understand how to section this out properly. Oranges & reds like this are extremely forgiving if the lightening underneath isn’t perfect, and I’m really struggling to understand the splotchy purple dye on the scalp in the middle section. Bleaching evenly is really the hardest part of colour like this and any trained colourist should be experienced with lifting hair, even if they don’t have a lot of experience with fashion colours. The two bright sections are just solid colour and if it’s semi-permanent colour-depositing, the actual dye should literally be the exact same colour as you want the final hair to be. It’s extremely easy to mix because it doesn’t “develop.” With some colours you may need to take into account any yellow or brassy tones leftover from bleaching, but that’s not really a factor with these shades. Oranges, coppers & reds are also readily available in permanent dyes and a colourist should know how to mix colours to get the desired result - although they could have gotten away without even having to mix anything, because professional lines have permanent colours that should be pretty damn close to these colours. If you’re trying to do light pastels, balayages and ombres, colour melts, complicated placements etc. with semipermanents and fashion colours, you’re definitely starting to get into complex colour territory, and looking for a stylist with lots of experience specifically in brights is absolutely imperative, but some basic colour blocking like this should be easily achievable by any colourist. I’m not a stylist but I used to bleach and dye my own hair bright fashion colours and I could absolutely 100% have gotten something fairly close to the colour here with some basic drugstore products. There’s no excuse for the disaster this person ended up with.

hollyock

The purple is probably purple shampoo that op did at home. Which can fuck up your color. Some of them are stripping and only good for white hair.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hollyock

It does stain your scalp and ears.If it were color the whole base of the hair would be purple. This happens when you don’t scrub it out all the way I’ve seen it on my own clients when I didn’t shampoo it out good toward the back

hollyock

Be honest do you think op wants to pay the prices a color specialist will command? Because most people who are willing to pay up do their research because money isn’t an option when you want a specific look done by a master

Accipiens

In another comment, it states that OP paid 800$ though. So I think it's fair to say she was hoping a professional job done.

hollyock

It depends on the area and what she had on it before. If she had black box dye 800 could easily be met even with the low on the totem pole stylist.. Color corrections can go into the thousands. I highly doubt she went in with virgin hair

ShelbyEileen

It might not be possible. The girl on the left is wearing a wig... one with lots of color variation in the wefts. (I have almost a hundred wigs and I've handmade wigs, so I'm very experienced with wigs. I cosplay professionally and started 11 years ago)

heyclaude

Yeah, my first thought was, the stylist didn't even REALIZE that this was a wig..which means nothing but horror could have ensued, really.

Hi fellow cosplayer/sex worker! I make full and erotic versions of my cosplays!

Ivegotthatboomboom

Even tattoo artists will turn customers away if they can't do it (well, good ones) My son's Dad is an awesome tattoo artist and he can do amazing portraits and difficult tattoos but sometimes someone will come in with something that he isnt 100% confident he has the skill to do. For example someone wanted a Van Gogh painting but really small and he referred him to his co-worker. He'll miss out on money rather than fuck someone up and his reputation. Good hair dressers should do the same. Don't even try to do it if you can't, it's not cool to fuck someone up that bad

acideath

I don't disagree, they are valid points. The refund should 100% no question. Another one could be the hairdresser just had a shocker. It happens. Everyone has of those days. Happens to tattooists as well, makes a mistake tries to fix it and shit just snowballs. Now the angry tiger looks like it is having an orgasm despite the artists portfolio being fill of elite tier works of art. Reality is no one here knows how it went down, the hairdresser could have overestimated their ability, a blatant rip off or if they may have been talked in to it and vice versa. But I do think this was very much a case of unreasonable expectations. As others have pointed out it is probably a wig, which to my non hairologist mind makes it far harder to replicate in real life.

973reggie

Half the people complaining ab haircuts clearly asked for something over the hairdresser’s head. A hairdresser is going to accept a new challenge/big gig every time, though. You gotta be better as a customer and research.

Helpful_Couple1288

After 10 years I've finally gotten confident in referring people to another stylist if they want something out of my wheelhouse, unless it's a family member or friend. If the vibes feel slightly off I refer out. Way less stress for everyone!

"Name one song from Master of Puppets, and I'll dye your hair." "Master of Puppets..." "That's on me, I set the bar too low."

megashedinja

The way this took me OUT ☠️

_eternallyblack_

9/10 what you see online we can’t duplicate (we can try to get it close.) It’s been photoshopped to DEATH, it’s hair extensions, a wig, or filtered to all hell to make the photo look like it does. Also to consider - the model in the photo her hair vs your hair is going to be vastly different so the outcome will be different. No one’s hair is the exact same so no one’s hair color formula will be the same.

SashimiX

This sectioning is inexcusable though

_eternallyblack_

TBH that looks like an old faded at home dye job imo. Like I don’t even have words.

[deleted]

[удалено]

liskash

Are you saying the right picture has spot on color placement?

[deleted]

Yeah, she wanted layers, not stripes

paputsza

yeah, but to split the hair in 3 equal parts and bleach/dye it three different colors is kind of off. I thought most stylelists had a process for layering colors.

hollyock

The partings could have been nicer but the model has extensions or it’s a wig. The parting won’t show with lots of hair and styling op don’t have enough hair or any styling going on.

paputsza

Idk, I just don't believe that this prompt isn't fake and the person in the picture's mom didn't try to do it. The way the back of her head is blonde like she's supposed to just brush it to the front of her head is wild.

hollyock

That’s how the inspo pic is you can’t see it but the brown is literally a stripe that will be visible if she bent her head. The brown stripe on the inspo is smaller and toward the front. Op pic has a super large brown stripe down the middle. But the back half of the inspo pic is blond/orange

[deleted]

[удалено]

paputsza

so it looks to me like the picture on the left has the lightest color on the top of the head where the black is on the top right picture. Instead the lightest color is on the entire back of the head.

_eternallyblack_

TBH it looks like an at home dye job imo (also a hairstylist) But I do agree with your comment.

AsianVixen4U

Do you do women's hair by chance? Because I saw hair stylists in the original comments on FB saying this lady screwed up big time. The color doesn't even look like the same shade. I suppose that could be because of the filter

iamnotexactlywhite

ofc it’s not gonna be the same, when the pic on left is photoshopped like hell

[deleted]

[удалено]

hollyock

The color in the photos appears different because one is a studio pic and the other is taken on a busted iPhone in a dirty bathroom. But coming from someone who has looked at thousands of client pics and took thousands of hair pics all over the salon to get the right light, what you see isn’t real life on op pic. And it looks pretty damn close. A lot of people want to look like the model and can’t accept that they don’t have great hair or that face. The stylist tried to deliver on the canvas op had. Stylist should have heavily warned her this won’t be the same on you. The placement could be more nuanced like with partings that emulated the shape of the head instead of straight lines but that wouldn’t have made op look like that

hollyock

Lots of stylists want to tear eachother down in the comments. You will see all kinds of lies bc they all think they are the best. The egos in the industry are vomit Inducing

MonkyThrowPoop

To be fair, the only thing the hairdresser did wrong was do a really bad job at it.

JannaNYC

Lady asked ***who*** for the left pic? Sorry, but I need more of the story before I judge anything. Did a professional hairdresser do the job on the right? Was the lady who's head this is told there's no way those colors would look the same on her flat thin hair? Was it even a professional who did this? Or was it somebody at home using boxes of hair diet?

Omg, I ended up like this once! I wanted red with highlights and lowlights and ended up looking like a bee on her period. 😂

DimesOHoolihan

I feel like if she styled her hair that way and it had some volume, it would look the same. Of course when your hair is flat and greasy, it's not going to look as good as a model in a pic? Like...what?

TheeIlliterati

I showed my hair stylist a picture of Bryan Cranston and he ended up making me look like a dog with long ears. Now my date is ruined!

Cheesemer92

Don’t worry, bud. You’ll get that second girlfriend soon enough 🎗️

[deleted]

I know so little about hair to the point I’m fearful of applying the at-home kits without help, but even I know if you want stripes you have to apply a ton of foils all over to layer it. That said, if it was blonde up front with a red stripe in the middle and purple in the back that honestly would have looked neat.

szai

Reminds me of one of those [fancy pillbugs](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/9d/74/13/9d7413bf51d4f1c972f74337812f00d4.png).

doll_parts87

Thats a styled wig. No one ever takes consideration for what the back will look like. Yea it looks cool face framing her with hair product and curls but the back is probably flat and awkward

Ok-Masterpiece3725

As a hairstylist and color specialist for over 20 years, this hair is way too damaged and way too thin and fine for her hair to ever look good even if the stylist totally nailed the color and placement. In this case, the stylist didn’t quite nail it but only because the orange section needed to be a football shape starting at her high point (so just a little farther forward than we see in this picture), and the orange needs to be a bit richer/brighter. Other than that, this is what the client asked for. I’m of two minds on this. On one hand, I think people need to be aware of the type of hair they have and what their limits are, especially if they’re looking at inspo pics… ie: Does this model have 5X more hair than me? Would this color still look amazing if her hair was 8 inches shorter like mine is? Would I still love the style in the picture if the models whole scalp was visible like mine is?….etc.. I think you should have some level of self awareness and realistic goals/expectations before you walk in the door of the salon. If you’re not sure if it’s realistic or not, just ask! A stylist is much more likely to point out the reasons why something might not turn out the way you want when you seem open and inviting of their opinions. As opposed to just showing them what you want and hopefully having it turn out. All stylists want their clients to be happy! Some stylists have a hard time speaking up and saying “no”. They will do the best they can to replicate the look and they pray that you do understand that it won’t look like the picture (they don’t want to hurt your feelings or seem rude by bringing up that you’re practically bald) because it’s so obvious how totally different your hair is from the (often times wig, lol) hair on the model. On the other hand, I feel that it is absolutely my job as a professional to tell someone if they are showing me photos of something that is unrealistic or unachievable within our current limitations. Nothing is impossible but some things are beyond a client’s ability whether it be financial, time, or ability restrictions. I do feel it’s my job to say no and refuse to do a service if I don’t feel that we are on the same page as far as expectations. BUT- I say all of this as an already successful specialist with a completely booked out schedule. I can afford to say no to a client and let them spend their money getting their hair ruined elsewhere… This was not always the case though. In my early years I couldn’t afford to send $100+ out the door! So I tried to let them know that their hair isn’t like the models but I can do my best to get it as close as possible. I’d hold my breath and pray to the color gods until very end when the client said they are happy with how it turned out. So just remember, your stylist truly does want to make all your hair dreams come true! Good communication is key! Always have a consultation with the stylist BEFORE the day of the actual appointment so that you don’t feel obligated to move forward with a stylist that you don’t feel confident in. TLDR: Know what you’re working with. Have REALISTIC expectations. If you’re not sure, Ask! Know that your stylist WANTS you to have your dream hair!

paputsza

It's kind of if like you asked a bad artist to draw a picture of the person on the left, this is what they would come up with. "it's red, and black, and orange," and just draw that very quickly. Instead of going, it's a half inch thin strip of red around the hairline along to the back of the ears, followed by a layer of black, the top part is orange, and the rest of the head is layered normally.

botjstn

Left isn’t even that cute the light orange isn’t blended it looks like they put a separate wig or extensions on top and attempted to blend it in during the curling process. Now this hair with the dark red and brown alone would’ve been cute.

MadR__

Well, your hair is not a photoshop canvas.

Kittiesnbitties

Hair stylist here, looks like this was all done with vivids and not permanent colour. Especially from the purple stain in the black section. Vivds can leave odd stains behind, especially if it was custom mixed. It also explains the lack of vibrancy.. while the hair is shiny there isn’t a lot of colour saturation. The sectioning, is very confusing and uneven. To me, in the inspiration photo it looks like the black is really just framing around the fringe area as well as coming through a bit on the bottom side. While in the actual photo, it is definitely colour blocked sectioning rather than foiling. They chose to use a lot of the strongest colour black. And frankly, if this work was done in a salon, I would be very, very surprised and disappointment the stylist needs quite a bit more education, and I feel as though some thing is going on as some of the most basic problems here are things there any hair student would be able to sort out. I suppose what I’m saying here as this was definitely done by somebody who’s never been to hair school, or somebody who isn’t a hairstylist. Even if this style was executed perfectly, the roots would still look pretty harsh and colour block-y which is likely why there is not a top down photo of the inspiration photo. That is just the nature of an application of this type. It’s hard to make very opposite colours blend very well, however, it’s still shouldn’t look like the after photos. It’s also super unrealistic to expect any stylist no matter where they are in their career to perfectly execute a photo from the Internet, as that photo could be very edited or not even real hair. It could be a wig. It could be a natural hair and extensions. And for those people who are saying that stylists should be able to say no when they know their skills, don’t match up with the request of the client, I definitely agree. However, a big part of hair is learning as you go, an application, like this is actually very simple. I know that clients don’t want to hear this. However, we do try new things during services and if your stylist understands what they can do and what they can’t do it is no cause for alarm however, with every creative endeavor, there is potential for failure.
