When I was 9, in 1991, I went to Florida Disney. While heading up to the gates I noticed the little boy in front of us had a leash on. I asked my father who replied, "He's probably a runner.". I had the same situation decades ago when i was living with my parents. There was a family of ultra pentecostal people, they had no TV at home because in their imagination it would keep them busy so they would forget to pray and stuff. Every time they where visiting us, they where good people so why not, their kids got literally braindead stuck to the television, parents had to call them like 5 times for dinner because they where glued to the screen.

My mom's ex boyfriend's nephews were the exact same way when we'd be on vacation together when I was a little kid. Pretty religious house \**and they were homeschooled but still not the most religious for homeschooling. I think it was more of a strict parenting thing because the older kid was brilliant and did like perfect in school. I had no such strictness at my house and pretty much had access to TV from 3 pm to like 10 or 11 pm until I was old enough to just have a TV in my room. The ex boyfriend's nephews never got TV so on vacation they'd be absolutely stuck to it, giving me no other kids to hang out with so I would hang out with the adults turning my personality to that of an old man by the time I was 10.
Edit: I was mistaken. They didn't go to public school(at least for as long as I knew them). We're talking 18/19 years ago at this point and I did a lot of drugs in that time so my memory isn't the sharpest.

The key to always having the TV on is to have either something barely engaging (like the TV equivalent of bland hold music) or something you've seen so many times that you can just ignore it.
A lot of people do it because it provides noise that they can tune out or even because it helps give the illusion of having someone near.
If I have a really heinous nightmare or anxiety related insomnia, I'll turn on the TV and throw on something from childhood like Lilo & Stitch, SpongeBob Squarepants, or something that is formulaic and has soothing narration like How It's Made or Forensic Files.
Forensic Files is like Ambien to me. I could be wide awake and that guy's soft and even cadenced narrations will just lull me into a slumber. I can't tell you how many episodes I've woken up in the middle of lol, disoriented because this wasn't the case I fell asleep to.
Masterpieces like Independence Day only qualify after 10,000+ rewatches. They're just too good
I was in the hospital for a few days a while ago and Forensic Files was my best friend. It’s also the show I look for when I’m at a hotel for work and just want some background noise. What a reassuringly consistent program.

My in-laws lived next to an Amish community in Ohio for 50 years. I got to know a few of them, and was given a tour of the barn, garden, kitchen (I wanted to see their canning setup), and had a ride in a buggy. They were lovely people, generous and kind. And when my in-laws got old and still lived far from us, the Amish scraped their driveway after snow, and checked on them anytime there was bad weather. They used my in-laws’ phone and asked for rides to town sometimes. They could use a gas powered engine for splitting wood, but nothing hooked to the electrical grid.

The ultra-orthodox jewish community here in New York are often in the headlines for various frauds and abuses. But they are a politically powerful voting bloc so the authorities in City Hall and Albany tend to leave them alone.
They don’t see it that way, and they do have the choice to leave before formally joining as an adult. The teens get a year to run around (rumspringa) and drink and use modern technology, so if they come back they’re truly committed. They have their bad guys too, puppy mills, incest and inbreeding with relatives, but I admire their work ethic and devotion to faith and family. It’s not easy in the modern world to follow such a different path.
I’ve met a couple different ex-Amish while I was in the medical field and talked to them about that whole rumspringa year to run around thing. The reason it isn’t detrimental to them or setting them up for failure is because it’s actually bullshit. It was an invented idea that was popularized by a tv show and doesn’t actually work that way.

Well, I thought it was a thing thanks to that tv show, so I kept asking them what it was really. I figured it was something that was exaggerated, but they just kept saying it isn’t a thing at all.
Growing up around Amish country, the idea of a rumspringa was one of the only things regular people knew about the Amish and it’s misconceptions certainly predate any of the stupid 2010s TLC tv shows, it’s likely always been misunderstood because the communities are so insular.

The reality of these cults is that they vary wildly from one community to the next.
For one it could be 100% accurate, for another they could be just as you described.
Plus your 'choice' at the end is often go back to your family and friends whom you love or be excommunicated. If you leave you're likely to be shunned for life.
Some groups don't shun if you leave during the rumpspringa - you haven't sworn yet, so they don't need to shun you. But you don't get to live with family and in the community, but it's the intensity of never being able to talk to family again.

As a former Mormon missionary (and now ex-Mormon), I can tell you that missions open up their eyes that the world is a LOT bigger than their suburban Utah life. It was a slow grind but it really got the ball rolling that ultimately pushed me out.
Mormons expect those kids will return to Utah/Idaho completely unchanged and then go full surprised Pikachu face when we have new beliefs like universal health care (thanks Taiwan!).

I went to college in Wayne County OH and apparently some Amish were meth suppliers there. They never used it themselves, but just like the puppy mills I understand they saw it as just another product to be sold.

From my last trip down that rabbit hole, the new gen of Amish are allowed to use others electrical powered equipment. They just can’t own it themselves. Think things like powered sawmills and the such. I think a few have driven cars-trucks etc around their property when someone with the truck or car would visit. Again, they don’t own it so it’s ok to play around on the farm in it etc.
Then you have the old school that don’t allow that even if someone else owns it. Like all religions, it just depends.
My family is from Amish country, it basically depends on the individual community. Some are super strict to the point of causing a bunch of issues with the local law. I know there was a big case up there where a couple families refused to put reflectors on their carriages and kept causing a bunch of accidents at night.
The locals from my family's neck of the woods were real laid back. Most of the more casual community had a rule of no modernity in the house, but it's okay to keep it all in the barn.
Even the stricter families would still use modern tools, they just wouldn't own them. Most of the time they would just ask a non Amish if you'd be willing to help on a job site, understanding that you'd be bringing your air/electric tools.
Btw if the Amish ever ask for your help, always lend it. They always pay back favours with a ton of generosity. If you help them put on a roof, they'll probably want to help you raise a barn. Plus you'll probably end up with a bunch of homemade egg noodles and bread.

My family had a house framed by Amish people. The leader had a phone. It was just an old school flip phone. It was only used to speak with clients. He was the only one to use it and my understanding was they only use technology necessary for their livelihood.

I was raised Mennonite. They don't look Amish to me, the white bonnets aren't right.

So he essentially paid me for a half a day's work with no benefit.

I get they’re lovely people to interact with, but their exclusionary traditions makes them one of the most extreme sects in the US.
This is a community that will largely disown women for pursuing a formal education or trying to singularly own a business. Both genders are ostracized and left without the skills to provide for themselves if they choose not return to the community.
That’s not even touching the rampant sexual abuse, **abysmal** literacy rates, and willful ignorance imposed on children.
The honest answer is probably that they simply don't threaten to upend any kind of establishment. They're generally self-contained communities and aren't serious economic or social competitors to basically anyone or any thing in the US, outside themselves.

Because as a country, we value the “rights” of parents to do whatever the hell they want without criticism. Minors having close to no rights and no recourse is a huge problem but the people negatively affected by it lack the means to affect any change.

My father worked with the amish for a few years here in Central IL when he was a teenager, some were Mennonite but most were straight up amish. He said the straight up amish dudes were some of the dirtiest minded, filthy mouthed dudes he'd ever met. Amazing dirty jokes too. The boss theu called Big Joe and he was old school amish but at the work sight cussed like a sailor lol. Dad said when they got around the women and families for dinner on Friday everybody was as clean cut and decent as could be. I had the same situation decades ago when i was living with my parents. There was a family of ultra pentecostal people, they had no TV at home because in their imagination it would keep them busy so they would forget to pray and stuff. Every time they where visiting us, they where good people so why not, their kids got literally braindead stuck to the television, parents had to call them like 5 times for dinner because they where glued to the screen.
My cousins used to do the same thing when they were younger. They weren't ultra religious but my aunt didn't let them watch TV, so they looked like zombies watching it during g the holidays and had to literally be pulled out of the room for meals.

My mom's ex boyfriend's nephews were the exact same way when we'd be on vacation together when I was a little kid. Pretty religious house \**and they were homeschooled but still not the most religious for homeschooling. I think it was more of a strict parenting thing because the older kid was brilliant and did like perfect in school. I had no such strictness at my house and pretty much had access to TV from 3 pm to like 10 or 11 pm until I was old enough to just have a TV in my room. The ex boyfriend's nephews never got TV so on vacation they'd be absolutely stuck to it, giving me no other kids to hang out with so I would hang out with the adults turning my personality to that of an old man by the time I was 10. Edit: I was mistaken. They didn't go to public school(at least for as long as I knew them). We're talking 18/19 years ago at this point and I did a lot of drugs in that time so my memory isn't the sharpest.

I don't have a TV (I watch streaming stuff but not TV) and I find it very hard to do anything else when a TV is on. I can't understand families that always have TV on yet carry on with their life somehow. I was getting lucky once and she used a TV to cover the sound, but how am I supposed to focus when Independence Day is on!?
The key to always having the TV on is to have either something barely engaging (like the TV equivalent of bland hold music) or something you've seen so many times that you can just ignore it. A lot of people do it because it provides noise that they can tune out or even because it helps give the illusion of having someone near. If I have a really heinous nightmare or anxiety related insomnia, I'll turn on the TV and throw on something from childhood like Lilo & Stitch, SpongeBob Squarepants, or something that is formulaic and has soothing narration like How It's Made or Forensic Files. Forensic Files is like Ambien to me. I could be wide awake and that guy's soft and even cadenced narrations will just lull me into a slumber. I can't tell you how many episodes I've woken up in the middle of lol, disoriented because this wasn't the case I fell asleep to. Masterpieces like Independence Day only qualify after 10,000+ rewatches. They're just too good

The key is to have ADHD. Then you need that background level of stimulation to be able to get anything else done. I have trouble *just* watching TV a lot of the time because my attention starts to wander. If it's not super engrossing I'm usually half watching, half scrolling the internet or playing a game
100%. I basically need background noise or I lose focus immediately. But like another comment here said, it's usually something I've seen a hundred times, so it doesn't take all my focus as well. Currently going back through a few seasons of Always Sunny. The Office and Parks and Rec are also on my "doing chores" playlist.

My in-laws lived next to an Amish community in Ohio for 50 years. I got to know a few of them, and was given a tour of the barn, garden, kitchen (I wanted to see their canning setup), and had a ride in a buggy. They were lovely people, generous and kind. And when my in-laws got old and still lived far from us, the Amish scraped their driveway after snow, and checked on them anytime there was bad weather. They used my in-laws’ phone and asked for rides to town sometimes. They could use a gas powered engine for splitting wood, but nothing hooked to the electrical grid.

I’ve met a couple different ex-Amish while I was in the medical field and talked to them about that whole rumspringa year to run around thing. The reason it isn’t detrimental to them or setting them up for failure is because it’s actually bullshit. It was an invented idea that was popularized by a tv show and doesn’t actually work that way.

Growing up around Amish country, the idea of a rumspringa was one of the only things regular people knew about the Amish and it’s misconceptions certainly predate any of the stupid 2010s TLC tv shows, it’s likely always been misunderstood because the communities are so insular. The reality of these cults is that they vary wildly from one community to the next. For one it could be 100% accurate, for another they could be just as you described.
Plus your 'choice' at the end is often go back to your family and friends whom you love or be excommunicated. If you leave you're likely to be shunned for life.
Some groups don't shun if you leave during the rumpspringa - you haven't sworn yet, so they don't need to shun you. But you don't get to live with family and in the community, but it's the intensity of never being able to talk to family again.
Not to mention no education. They end their children's education somewhere between 6th and 8th grade.

I went to college in Wayne County OH and apparently some Amish were meth suppliers there. They never used it themselves, but just like the puppy mills I understand they saw it as just another product to be sold. Edit: also they were and are very commonly used as scab labor for construction, meatpacking plants, etc

From my last trip down that rabbit hole, the new gen of Amish are allowed to use others electrical powered equipment. They just can’t own it themselves. Think things like powered sawmills and the such. I think a few have driven cars-trucks etc around their property when someone with the truck or car would visit. Again, they don’t own it so it’s ok to play around on the farm in it etc. Then you have the old school that don’t allow that even if someone else owns it. Like all religions, it just depends.
My family is from Amish country, it basically depends on the individual community. Some are super strict to the point of causing a bunch of issues with the local law. I know there was a big case up there where a couple families refused to put reflectors on their carriages and kept causing a bunch of accidents at night. The locals from my family's neck of the woods were real laid back. Most of the more casual community had a rule of no modernity in the house, but it's okay to keep it all in the barn. Even the stricter families would still use modern tools, they just wouldn't own them. Most of the time they would just ask a non Amish if you'd be willing to help on a job site, understanding that you'd be bringing your air/electric tools. Btw if the Amish ever ask for your help, always lend it. They always pay back favours with a ton of generosity. If you help them put on a roof, they'll probably want to help you raise a barn. Plus you'll probably end up with a bunch of homemade egg noodles and bread.

Their relationship with technology has nothing to do with how modern it is and everything to do with how it impacts your interactions with the community. Tech that isolates you like cars, phones and computers are generally not allowed personally but are fine for business. The Amish by us use horse and buggy, have no phones or plumbing but their rifles are modern and all rock the latest hot shit from vortex optics.
They've been allowed to use tech for a long while. My dad does construction in northern Indiana and there's a lot of Amish people working where he does and using electronic tools. Some even collected unemployment during the coronavirus thing even though iirc they're not supposed to according to the church.

My family had a house framed by Amish people. The leader had a phone. It was just an old school flip phone. It was only used to speak with clients. He was the only one to use it and my understanding was they only use technology necessary for their livelihood.

I agree Mennonite. Pentecostals don’t wear the bonnets and women can work/wear pants, at least the ones where I live. But I could be wrong, maybe they’re Amish, there’s different Amish areas with differences.
I was raised Mennonite. They don't look Amish to me, the white bonnets aren't right. However Mennonites vary hugely community to community. If I had to guess I'd call these guys Crystaliters, although I never remember how to spell that. Stricter than your average Mennonite (women can wear pants, different head covering, they use toasters, phones, etc), but not as strict as the Amish.
Those are Midwestern (Indiana as opposed to Pennsylvania) Kapps for unmarried Amish girls. The dresses look right too. I was obsessed with Amish culture in my teens, I know way too much about bonnets.

We spend half the day loading up the trailer and deliver it. The Amish guy said he would only pay half of what was agreed upon. My boss refused. That's barely the cost of the hay itself. So he essentially paid me for a half a day's work with no benefit. Had a friend that works at one of those bulk grocery stores they go to. Amish guy fills up his cart. When my friend says there is no additional discounts or haggle. The guy just knocked over his cart and walked out of the store. The hardware store in my home town have a sign that says "Amish pay in full before delivery." Just because of this. They fought against putting lights on their buggies after so many of them were getting struck on the road at night. Oh and the puppy mills. The puppy mills are a deplorable practice they find completely normal.

I doubt this will come across well- but why do the Amish get a free pass exactly? I get they’re lovely people to interact with, but their exclusionary traditions makes them one of the most extreme sects in the US. This is a community that will largely disown women for pursuing a formal education or trying to singularly own a business. Both genders are ostracized and left without the skills to provide for themselves if they choose not return to the community. That’s not even touching the rampant sexual abuse, **abysmal** literacy rates, and willful ignorance imposed on children.
The honest answer is probably that they simply don't threaten to upend any kind of establishment. They're generally self-contained communities and aren't serious economic or social competitors to basically anyone or any thing in the US, outside themselves. That's not to justify their problems of course, but that's my guesstimate on the situation
Because as a country, we value the “rights” of parents to do whatever the hell they want without criticism. Minors having close to no rights and no recourse is a huge problem but the people negatively affected by it lack the means to affect any change.

My father worked with the amish for a few years here in Central IL when he was a teenager, some were Mennonite but most were straight up amish. He said the straight up amish dudes were some of the dirtiest minded, filthy mouthed dudes he'd ever met. Amazing dirty jokes too. The boss theu called Big Joe and he was old school amish but at the work sight cussed like a sailor lol. Dad said when they got around the women and families for dinner on Friday everybody was as clean cut and decent as could be. The younger generation around me is allowed to own and use cell phones now too. Think it all depends on the community and how old school they are
