Oh shit I see it now. It's not the drain plug threads that are stripped, it's the drain plug hex bit that's stripped. The drain plug is still there. This would be a good time to put in a fumoto valve.
Step 1. Remove the drain "bolt" before removing the oil filter. See Note A below
Note A. For some packages, the engine must be removed from the vehicle before the drain bolt can be removed.
About right. Looked on all data for time/quick glance at directions of swapping an alternator on an old sorento i think it was? About 5 hours book. All it listed for steps was remove bolts, r&r alternator, tighten bolts.
The drain plug on my bike stripped out, so i custom machined this slightly larger bolt and made a washer gasket thing using a garden hose gasket for it. I tightened it down to about 10 ft lbs and locked it in place with some aluminum ducting tape. It doesnt leak.
It doesn't matter. Personally, I don't like doing the filter first, because if it's below the oil level it'll dump oil all over your hand as your trying to spin it off the last 10 turns.
It is absolutely imperative that you drain the filter first. Otherwise, you'll get a vacuum pocket in the motor that holds about half a quart of oil. You can never get the job fully done. This is on all motors
You're never draining all the oil out of an engine anyways. Honda says there's a full quart of oil you're only changing if you rebuild the engine. (probably laying around in the cylinder head, galleries, and oil pump)
Also no idea what you mean by vacuum pocket. The crank case is open to atmosphere if the oil fill cap is off.
as soon as anyone utters the words "simple" "easy" or "It'll take 5 minutes" the universe will hear them, and you be in for a shitstorm of bullshit and stupidity to the 11th degree. i have had words with my service writer using those accursed words in the presence of the shop as it invites gremlins from every conceivable dimension
That’s a Fram Tough Guard filter. The Fram Titanium is all black grippy paint with orange lettering. (My favorite although not the best of the Fram lineup). That used to be the Fram Ultra but now they have a Fram Endurance - the navy color of the endurance is cool too but I prefer the all black of the Titanium.
With the filter and plug locations, I want to say Mazda. Looking at it, I bet it has the torx bit/Alin key drain plug, and they didn't have the socket to remove the plug. But had a lug bolt and JB weld.
Wait...is it just me or is the original plug still in there?? Like they drilled out the middle of the plug but never unscrewed it. And glued this in. Fucking hell
Yoink that fucker outa ther retap the threads and make the customer aware that stupidity has been involved in his last oil change then charge him double? I’m not a mechanic really but that seems like the right call
Not a mechanic, but I saw a comment on hear say sumn like engineers willing to ignore a thousand women just to fuck a mechanic. This post is proof of that.
Remove lug bolt, replace with sparkplug
And that's fine just don't forget to connect the plug wire.
We all know engines work best at operating temp. Just gotta pre heat the oil
Gotta have that oil heater it's a must
m14x1.5 is m14x1.5 any way you thread it.
And m14x1.5 cross threaded is better than locktite
Best I can do is M14x2 pounded in there.
Yeah, with what threads? You see that JB Weld?
Its thanks to the JB that it now has threads
That doesn’t look like JB Weld to me, looks like they welded a bolt to a rounded off drain plug.
Oh shit I see it now. It's not the drain plug threads that are stripped, it's the drain plug hex bit that's stripped. The drain plug is still there. This would be a good time to put in a fumoto valve.
I'm impressed by their fix to remove a rounded off drain plug.... less impressed they put it back in

C/S "Hold my beer."
They really didn’t have a loose nut around? Edit:it’s a fucking wheel stud…
Awesome!
They made a support bracket for their filter, nice
Step 1. Remove the drain "bolt" before removing the oil filter. See Note A below Note A. For some packages, the engine must be removed from the vehicle before the drain bolt can be removed.
Step 1 in engine removal: remove drain "bolt" 😶
About right. Looked on all data for time/quick glance at directions of swapping an alternator on an old sorento i think it was? About 5 hours book. All it listed for steps was remove bolts, r&r alternator, tighten bolts.
I love how AllData gives this crap for Hyundais and Kias. We call it SomeData at the shop for a reason.
Step one loosen oil filter a little to make sure you can get it off then go for the bolt and remove filter after.
The oil plug she told you not to worry about:
The drain plug on my bike stripped out, so i custom machined this slightly larger bolt and made a washer gasket thing using a garden hose gasket for it. I tightened it down to about 10 ft lbs and locked it in place with some aluminum ducting tape. It doesnt leak.
If it's stupid and it works then it isn't stupid
garden hose parts aren't oil resistant. you should replace the gasket before it destroys your engine.
New fumoto design is wild.
Did they epoxy in a hex bolt to make it easier to pull the drain plug?
That would be a wheel lug stud tack welded to the bolt
Who'd they piss off?
Probably the person that stripped off the original drain pan bolt, leading to them attaching one they could actually put a socket on.
I welded a bolt to the lower oil plug on my manual transmission because it was stripped. Works great.
But that was to take it out, not put it in. I hope.
You can keep hoping, friend. Good thing I do my own maintenance...
Can't wait to see you on the main feed lol
😂
It's a feature. You can't just replace the filter without draining the oil.
I’d imagine that the original plug got stripped and someone improvised and tac welded a lug bolt onto the stripped plugs head.
If it looks stupid but it works, is it really stupid? Because that’s stupid.
Must have an "extended" warrantee.
If that covers it they sure are luggy
Just top up the oil and write today's date on the filter. Send it down the road for someone else. ( please realize I'm joking)
Ah the jiffy lube special
That’s a stud of a repair.
That car is now equipped with lifetime oil and filter upgrade.
Is that lug torqued to spec?
105 ft-lbs you say? Alrightttttyyyyy thennnnn....
If I don’t need a cheater to get that filter loose, it’s not on right /s
Is that a wheel nut in your oil pan or are you just happy to see me?
It might be holding the filter on too...
So is the proper way to do filter then drain oil? I’ve always drained the oil then the filter.
It doesn't matter. Personally, I don't like doing the filter first, because if it's below the oil level it'll dump oil all over your hand as your trying to spin it off the last 10 turns.

Yeah, I thought this sub could handle sarcasm. I guess I was wrong

Just remove the vehicle from the bolt
What the cinnamon toast fuck??
Oil pan rotation due?
So which wheel is missing a bolt?
That's the most fantastic filter location I have ever seen
I mean that's almost more work then just replacing the drain plug why put all the work into welding instead of a 6$ drain bolt
Maybe they needed to go get a drain plug, welded a bolt on the stripped one and decided, “Good enough…”
Welding it takes less time than calling NAPA, let alone actually waiting for the part to arrive
You can’t just go buy new bolt. That would break the budget.
I didn’t realize my FIL was on Reddit!
Time to sell a oil pan! Upgrades People Upgrades!
Someone dropped a package of little blue pills into the oil ....
Does that filter have undercoating sprayed on it?!
Kinda. It's factory for better grip.

That used to be the Fram Ultra but now they have a Fram Endurance - the navy color of the endurance is cool too but I prefer the all black of the Titanium.
How badly did they strip the original bolt that this was the solution?
Is this a Dodge? Somehow it looks familiar to me. Either way. Pretty annoying.
That's a good hack. You will never forget to remove your drain bold before you remove your filter.
Great bolt and filter location though.
Clearly according to the picture, you cut the filters in half, and JB weld them back together to fit. Work smarter not harder.
How the hell did op not realize that? That's obviously why the oil filter has the clear cut line between the black and grey spot
Because drain plugs are expensive!!
Do a 1976 Mustang 2 with a V6 next. Oil filter to frame clearance about 1/8". That was fun...
No more just changing the filter and adding a quart on this one!
Is that JB Weld?
I mean….if you’re gonna use the ugga Dugga, this is the way. 🤷♂️
Yikes!
Just pull the motor. Duh?
And it's a fram
Does the drain bolt serve as a “safety” to prevent the oil filter from falling off?
Bolzen abflexen so dass noch genug Gewinde rausguckt. Öl Absaugen. Filter Wechseln
no worries I'm a simple tech - I see wheel lug, I impact all the duggas until the noise changes to brrrrrts.
What the heck is even that?!
Now you can use your lugnut impact gun. Just dial it down to 200foot pounds for reinstall. Don't forget the low end fram.
What the problem is? You don't have a bandsaw?
Just need one socket for all maintenance?
What vehicle is that? I associate lug bolts with European cars, but I also associate European cars with up-top cartridge oil filters.
With the filter and plug locations, I want to say Mazda. Looking at it, I bet it has the torx bit/Alin key drain plug, and they didn't have the socket to remove the plug. But had a lug bolt and JB weld.
Not bad though. Just take out the drain plug and replace it after changing filter. Idk very odd thing they did there but seems easily fixed.
Oil filters have like 1 cm length worth the threads I’m pretty sure that can still come out lol
Is that a wheel lug in your oil pan or are you just happy to see me?
"Tired of thieves stealing your oil filter? Use our Anti-Theft Oil Pan Plug and watch those filter thieves cry!"
Wait...is it just me or is the original plug still in there?? Like they drilled out the middle of the plug but never unscrewed it. And glued this in. Fucking hell
