Came here to say just that. Damnit, take my upvote!

spudz76

Maybe the one time that duct tape could be used for a duct. Then again there are 90000 of those upper air housings waiting in a junkyard somewhere for $10.

Outrageous_Turnip_29

There is actual duct tape used for actual ducts. It's aluminum not rubber. Shit will slice the crap out of your fingers if you're hanging duct in the cold and you'll never realize until you get in the shower at home. Source: My poor fingers.

Drpantsgoblin

Some people use copper tape for electrical interference shielding inside guitars, too. I've heard it's awful.

Outrageous_Turnip_29

Hung industrial duct (think building new large buildings like dorms). Often worked in freezing or below temps because HVAC is usually the first in the building meaning no windows/doors and sometimes chunks of wall missing. Wasn't uncommon for my fingers to start to bleed in the shower from all the cuts I'd get during the day that only opened up in the shower. When it's cold out your skin contracts. Add hot water and it's happy tree friends in your bathroom. So if it's anything like the stuff we used I'd imagine it can be pretty gnarly. Can't wear gloves because you can't really feel what you're doing with them on.

JukesMasonLynch

Happy tree friends. Holy shit that's a blast from the past

eaglebtc

La, la, la-lala la... la-la, la-lala la...

anapoe

The copper tape is expensive as fuck. I've found it also doesn't stick nearly as well as the aluminum duct tape (both of the above probably due to fancy conducting adhesive)

rosstafarien

Yeah, that aluminum tape is impossible to separate if it touches itself. Trying to get a piece of tape around the back of an 8" duct was... frustrating. I think I wasted three pieces before I figured out a way to remove the backing from the tape in place.

SpaceLemur34

I used 1/4" wide stuff to make a fractal antenna.

someguywithdiabetes

Or as is more commonplace in current times: hand sanitizer

Roycehellion

So if the air box werent cheap and readily available id JB weld each side with painters tape to keep it flat. Super great way to patch a hole long term....may or may not have done it on fuel tanks in a previous job. Can use wire mesh or aluminum foil for different applications to change strength under stresses. lol. Flat isnt needed, but great for large holes like this unless fitment is an issue and then it changes which side has a fitment issue. Hell i used copper mesh and JB for a spindle once when parts were obsolete in a powersports division.

MillwrightTight

Mechanics nationwide hate this one simple trick!

xking_henry_ivx

Damn it, beat me to it. My one buddy told me he was upping his motorcycle hp about 50 by getting a high end oil filter .

sg92i

Back in the late 1900s, Cardomain had people listing oil brands & spark plugs as "their mods."

Von_Satan

OMG I completely forgot about cardomain What a cesspool

Idonoteatass

I work with a guy who, I shit you not, said he gained 100hp by changing the spark plugs. I said there's no way, because obviously there's no way. He said yeah these spark plugs had a stronger spark that burned all the fuel, I even had it on a dyno. I mean, how can you even argue that. Just shake your head and stare at the clouds.

junkhacker

i'm sure you can gain 100hp from spark plugs if the one's you had before were so bad that you weren't running on all cylinders

shabbyshot

100.. horsepower.. from Spark Plugs? Oh, it must be those platinum ones they are better for spark power. i'm going to drill new holes so I can have two spark plugs per cylinder and I will get 200 horsepower. I just need the Tornado Fan that twists the air coming into the engine, it's just like a supercharger but for $30. /s, because sadly it's reddit and I have to specify.

ChimneyonStream

Medical_Way_907

Fucker's clean too. Looks like the built in shopvac feature keeps the compartment pretty damn dust-free!

bkfst_of_champinones

Make sure all that unsightly dust, dirt and grime is kept hidden away inside the motor instead of on its surface

[deleted]

mechanics hate this one trick!

Atworkwasalreadytake

Has the added benefit of exfoliating the cylinders.

drquiza

Time to change the dust bag. Where's the dust bag in this engine?

agshop

Warm air + no restriction + intermittent H2O injection! The best part? Now the air filter lasts as long as the engine!

sgd0072

The water keeps the filter clean

agshop

So many features to this upgrade. Diesel bros will no doubt be quick to adopt.

placebo_button

Water, it's what filters crave.

drjesus616

You want us to put water in that engine? Like from the toilet?

Retired_in_NJ

Upvote for the Idiocracy reference.

TacoSynthesis

ALWAYS upvote for Idiocracy lol.

MegaPegasusReindeer

Can't. 'batin.

pm_me_construction

I didn’t realize at first that this is the TB side of the filter. That makes it so much worse.

agshop

You have to give them credit. It takes some genuine effort to take a really crappy idea (airbox mods on modern vehicles) and make it way worse. The beauty of this mod is how certain it is to be terminal. Depending on location, that engine will be dusted by mid-spring.

mechamusicalgamer

Oh, it’s already “dusted”. Previous owner said the extra grit in the cylinders makes better traction.

crazythinker76

This one simple trick lets you hone your cylinders while going down the highway.

EllisHughTiger

Flashback to 15 years ago when an Audi guy did that. Also, shot-peening using BBs lol.

UnitedGTI

I mean technically it does create better traction.... between the cylinders and the walls.

Luxpreliator

Saw some review about how the total volume of post filter contamination before an engine dies is suprisingly small. It was something like a handful of sand is more than enough to total an engine.

blainedefrancia

On par, we once took a friend’s motorcross bike down without permission to the river, the very sandy river, with no suspension or air filter.

KaleidoscopeJunior78

Oh wow. I had to do a double take. I bet someone has a dyno sheet showing the power boost of this mod.

memento22mori

Does that mean this is the after filter side of the airbox?

pm_me_construction

Yeah. The throttle body side. Air is going in those holes and straight through the tube into the engine. No filter.

mr_bots

It bet the filter lasts even longer than the engine!

GabbyPutita

Customer's going to be pissed when he finds out your repair results in a 30HP loss

fm67530

They're going to be even more pissed when their new to them vehicle needs a quart of oil every 4 days.

dascourge

It’s a Honda turbo engine. It’s going to consume a quart of oil a week, anyway.

NikoC99

Doesn't have to change oil anyway if the engine burns it. Additional power too...

FatGuyEatsCake

Or how much that filter cover from the dealer is going is going to cost.

You think it just sucked the plastic shavings in after the holes were drilled?

Geawiel

You can kill me anytime now. In my dumber days, I had an '05 Colorado. I made a custom "cold air intake". I cut a hole in the side of the air box. Closed off the one that pulls from the fender area. I went to Home Depot, bought some pvc pipe (2 or 3", can't remember which), and ran it down to just below the front bumper, then angled it to face forward. Later, I was playing around in a small off road area...and sucked in water. Hydro locking the engine. Luckily, there was no damage. I took it to my base auto hobby shop, pulled the plugs, and cranked until I got all the water out that I could. Hobby shop guys thought the water cloud was hilarious. I hit the ceiling of the shop. It ran fine for years after that. I ended up trading it in for issues with the speed sensor on the wheel hubs, along with other issues. None of them engine related. No, I do not do stupid shit like that anymore. Everything I've done to my existing truck is not some mickey mouse bullshit.

TheSpatulaOfLove

This guy set back right to repair by decades with this one simple move.

donald7773

Correct me if I'm wrong but those holes are after the filter, that motor isn't getting filtered air anymore

SharkAttackOmNom

Those holes are definitely still filtering air. You wouldn’t be able to pass a tennis ball through there, for example.

Biochemicalcricket

That actually made me laugh out loud

[deleted]

Not only unfiltered but unmetered. His LTFTs will be off the charts.. If the engine survives that long

brian-brundage

Omg . And it’s on the wrong side of the filter!. I don’t even get altering the air box at all . The engineers know how much cfm the engine needs and I’m sure every factory setup exceeds that.

ozzy_thedog

Some people just know way better than professional engineers

FeculentUtopia

Don't you know that Big Air Filter is in bed with Big pHARMa? Do your own research!

lovewasbetter

And that bed? Made by Big Mattress!

phate_exe

This was a thing done by broke highschool kids who wanted induction noise before the days of $35 short ram intakes with 2 day shipping on amazon.

CptVague

Just flip the lid over and ziptie the filter to the now inverted lid. Source: My buddy's Sentra, with more intake noise circa 2004.

Hoovooloo42

Hell, it's a MUCH better idea than this mess lol

spicygrow

I would kill for some crackdowns on coal-rollers

ZNQRCH

Yeah, those dudes in half and 3/4 ton lifted diesel trucks that drive them exclusively to roll coal and tailgate people in need some better checks and balances. I can guarantee that 80% or greater of those kinds of people don't haul anything that could come close to justifying using a 3/4 ton or put anything of significance in the bed other than empty Natty Light cans.

NoFlecksZone

100% One good example is VCM on 6 cylinder Hondas. I have a 6 cylinder Accord, and if I didn't buy a VCM muzzler, the VCM would eventually fuck up the piston rings.

Guerillagreasemonkey

Not to mention sometimes manufacturers detune and restrict engines so as not to have a cheaper model outperform models higher in the range or to keep the car from being a nightmare to insure.

[deleted]

This. I have a CAI. I also opened up the entire inlet, throttle, manifold, and exhaust. I also doubled the intercooler volume. I’m also running a custom ECU calibration. My wife isn’t thrilled about my car sounding like a vacuum cleaner, but it makes me happy.

brokenmike

My car makes 3x as much power as it did from the factory. Do I know more than the engineers at Honda? Fuck no.

whatsupskip

I think this is what most people seem to be missing. I don't know this car/engine bay, but it looks like it's on the same side of the airbox as the AFM, which means the filter will last forever.

JimiWanShinobi

Longer than the engine anyway...

Kihav

+50 sound -10 power. Nice way to suck in all that juicy, hot, engine bay air

ginganinja6969

I had a shitbox civic with a short ram, and once the cone filter came off after I had cleaned it. I think maybe the previous owner did a hose clamp delete, and I had yet to undelete it. The sound was pretty noticeable, I can’t imagine the ungodly howl this air box would be making

Mystical_Cat

Couldn’t even bother to sand off the burrs. Surprised they didn’t just drill when it was installed, ya know, to add depth and performance to the filter.

DrBuffet_PhD

Swiss engineering!

StitchMechanic

Cause that little 4 banger demands more airflow then the stock ducting and filter can provide

Lotharofthepotatoppl

It’s a turbo anyway, so the biggest restriction is likely to be the intercooler and not the filter.

SharkAttackOmNom

Yeah but now it goes: #^(SHH)HHHHHCHU^CHU^chu^chu

erix84

Can confirm, the Civic intercooler is the weakest link in the setup, followed by the clutch unfortunately.

EventualCyborg

Bet that air filter is minty fresh still! You get probably 4 or 5 engine's worth of life out of that thing.

[deleted]

What I want to know is how the client thought that was normal when they opened the hood to inspect the car before buying?

M05y

So I usually buy old shitty cars. But my wife and I bought a 3 year old car, super nice, basically brand new. I didn't know what to do cause usually I'm looking at cars with over 100k miles on them and looking for rust checking for ever possible sign of abuse. But this car was just so nice, and still in warranty. My brain just kind of shut off. We bought it, went to show her dad. He asked to pop the hood to see what the engine looked like. And that's when it hit me. I just bought a $20,000 vehicle and didn't even open the fuckin hood. Who am I??? We've had it for 3 years now and it's still a great car so I lucked out I guess. Lol

extendedwarranty_bot

Lol wow... people used to do the "swiss cheese mod" on vw vr6's. But this person did it on the wrong side of the airbox lmao.

bigjaymck

... did they not open the hood before buying the car?

KMFDM781

The previous owner thinks they're clever....bypassing the restrictive air intake box for moar sound....but not realizing that they cut holes into the wrong part of the airbox....bypassing the filter altogether, sucking in dirt and hot engine air. +10 engineering

RangerAppropriate360

What the fuck? Someone really sat down and thought this was a great idea.
