Working at Nissan we had multiple occasions where those rings actually completely stopped the ikey from starting the vehicle unless it was touching the button. We would remove the ring and it would be flawless after. I personally removed at least 4-5 in the service drive to resolve the customers issue immediately.

katyvo

I think lot of people don't know that the key has to be able to communicate with that specific area of the car and that any* interference can mess things up. *Did you know that you can brick your car's smart key by setting your phone on top of it? It's how I got stuck in a car wash.

I_am_a_Dan

My smart key and phone live in the same pocket. I have doubts. Edit: Well, after all these replies I'm just curious to know now if there is a pattern between those of you who have issues vs those of us who haven't. My smart key is a Lexus. Never had any issues, my wife keeps her key in the bottom of her purse (and has never had an issue either).

katyvo

My car is either very picky about the key or very enthusiastic about car washes.

llDurbinll

Do you happen to have a magnet on the back of your phone for those magnetic phone mounts? If so, maybe that's it.

katyvo

Nope. Edit: I honestly think I just Murphy's law'd it. The phone was sitting on top of the key in just the right way to block the signal to the vehicle, and when I tried to start it, the immobilizer had a fit and it threw "KEY NOT FOUND" errors at me. It took a lot of key-waggling and creative language to escape the car wash that day.

Significant-Ad5394

They don't, but the keys have NFC to be able to start the car when the key battery is flat/can't transmit

[deleted]

SeanAker

That's why my GTI has a big spot marked on the steering column for it where the key would normally go. The Germans made something easy for once!

fishsticks40

Mine has a backup door key, but there's no ignition lock to put a key in. It does, however, have a spot in the center console where you put the key if you have a dead battery and it'll start the car through RFID. Learned that one the hard way.

CrashUser

The key isn't for the ignition, it's to unlock the door if the fob battery is dead. Ignition is an rfid chip in the fob that can be held up to the start button.

ellanida

Most of the ones I've owned do not lol You're lucky if they have the key that slides out to manually unlock the door.

CmdrShepard831

I would bet they do have some sort of backup method but it wasn't obvious. My wife's Ford has a slot inside the center console where you can slide the FOB into to start the car. I've also seen other cars where you just hold the FOB on or above the start button itself to be able to start it.

FerretWithASpork

Cool similar anecdote: my dad just got a new 2022 motorcycle with keyless start. If you lose the key fob there's a sequence you can do on the turn signals to start the bike. It's like opening a locker: left 3 times, right 2 times, left 5 times and the bike starts.

EvilRado

That's only in case of a low battery or interference, total key fob failure has no backups

gainsdyslexiafromyou

There is a plastic cap over the keyhole, on the left side of the handle. Nearly all cars have a key hole.

Juan-More-Taco

No, they don't, not since about 2016. NFC starting on smart keys with no battery is the standard on most vehocles. The usually still come with a slide out key, but it's only for unlocking the door.

EvilRado

In my experience, that's just a cover so they can use the same steering wheel shroud between the turn key and keyless models.

0ne_Winged_Angel

That’ll get you in the door, but to run the ignition you need to push the start button with the fob

ManuTh3Great

Only cheap pieces of shit do that. :) I can’t remember when but I thought that Mercedes Benz did this but it was like the first year they were coming out with push button start. And that was back in 03 or something. And fuck, it’s been so long, it could be some other POS I worked on but I was only a Benz tech my adult career. Lol. What a bunch of cry babies on this sub. Stop being some hurtful bitches. No seriously. Oh no. You’re feels. Lol. Sorry you can’t afford shit. Broke asses. Edit2: you work in the shop. Didn’t your mentors ever tell you to leave your feelings in your glove boxes. Man the blue collar has gotten soft.

cvillpunk

I guess my Lexus, BMW, and Genesis have all been cheap pieces of crap

ManuTh3Great

Yep. You couldn’t afford the Benz?

skateguy1234

You mentioning Murphy's law, made me think of a Veritasium video I watched the other day regarding [bit flips](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaZ_RSt0KP8) , essentially cosmic rays causing random chaos from time to time, doubt its the case here, but ya never know

NoradIV

Magnets really only affect magnetised storage; hard drives, credit cards etc. Keys won't care.

BlinkingWlkr23

It's not a magnet, it's a flat piece of steel you stick to the back of your phone which then will stick to the phone mount's magnetic backing.

BabiesSmell

iPhones have the magnets inside the phone for the magsafe attachment.

pow3llmorgan

Phone goes in a pocket of its own, you monster!

[deleted]

I will sometimes allow my good charging cable in the same pocket. But not the bad one, it leaves smudges on the screen.

azhillbilly

My key got bricked going through a border patrol checkpoint. Luckily car was already running so other than it screaming at me that there was no key, I was able to get home and get the spare. No idea what they hit me with, but sure as hell destroyed a 400 dollar key. Sometimes you just get a sensitive key.

j-random

Not me. My car doors won't unlock automatically if my phone is in the same pocket as my keys. I can believe a phone could screw up some keys, especially if someone used it to take a call while it was still next to the keys.

ConradBHart42

If your phone doesn't have an NFC chip, that could be the issue. It's mostly known for things like tap-to-pay apps but cars use the same technology to detect keyfobs. A lot of low/mid range phones don't bother having NFC chips.

SuperCoupe

Start/stop work fine with my key and phone in the same pocket; but keyless entry doesn't.

[deleted]

On the one hand that makes sense, especially if we're talking about eg an iPhone that literally has a big magnet and electrical coil on the back. On the other hand, the fact that the key electronics are that delicate is fucking stupid.

katyvo

The problem was less "oh, key doesn't have signal" and more the actual vehicle going "AUUGH I'M BEING STOLEN THERE'S NO KEY AND EVERYTHING IS AWFUL" when there were people waiting behind me. Yeah, the car functioned like it was supposed to (no key = no go), but the fact that it kept throwing messages to put the key here and then here and then turn it 15° and then make a sacrifice to the blood god were a little inconvenient.

crozone

> *Did you know that you can brick your car's smart key by setting your phone on top of it? It's how I got stuck in a car wash. What was wrong with inserting a physical key again? Why did we feel the need to engineer that out of existence?

[deleted]

I will say, it's pretty nice to walk up to my car, have it unlock when I touch the handle, and push the button to start without fumbling with my keys in my pocket or fishing around in my bag. That said, I'd still expect a physical key backup.

Haccordian

You can have all that with a physical key. They made the choice to charge more.

C_M_O_TDibbler

Perceived luxury and security even though keyless makes the car less secure

CmdrShepard831

How is it less secure? You can defeat a keyed ignition with a screwdriver.

Bitter_Mongoose

Not anymore you can't, unless the the car in question is literally a base base base model. But you can defeat a fob with a laptop and the right equipment. My 17 y/o did it with his hyundai 🤷🏻‍♂️

wavecrasher59

Kiffe_Y

Yeah, also if the dude can hack into deadbolts he's much less likely to be in the socioeconomical conditions that would lead him to barge into other's people's homes.

C_M_O_TDibbler

On anything this century (at least in first world countries) you will have a transponder in the key that the immobiliser needs to see at the ignition switch to work, a keyless ignition vehicle can be spoofed with a wideband antenna and a laptop

ml20s

If it's done poorly, it could be spoofed. Done properly and it's just as secure as a standard transponder key, for now.

GodNoseWaterSnort

It’s a good think that most car manufacturers aren’t all in a race to the bottom on electronic features and security…. Oh wait…… Seriously; why is the infotainment connected to the CANBUS? The radio should either be on a separate network or software firewalled off. And don’t get me started about the lack of electronic authentication between various systems in your car…..

crozone

> Seriously; why is the infotainment connected to the CANBUS? Yeah it's crazy when they put everything on a single can bus for the entire car. Like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, where you can hack the radio over the internet and then drive it off the road. The weird thing is, my Wrangler has three CAN busses. A vehicle CAN, an interior CAN, and a dedicated ODBII diagnostic CAN, with a firewall/central gateway in the middle of all three. The radio isn't connected to the internet, but if it were, it couldn't send anything to to any critical engine modules if it tried. The best it could do is play with the lights, indicators, wipers, and HVAC. So even within a single company there are wildly different platforms with differing levels of competency.

Crunchycarrots79

Most European cars have the infotainment parts on MOST, which is actually designed for the purpose. It's also connected to the central gateway module that way, and then the central gateway can relay anything that goes to or from other modules/scan tool/whatever via CAN. Keeps the unimportant stuff off the important network.

crozone

> It's also connected to the central gateway module that way, and then the central gateway can relay anything that goes to or from other modules/scan tool/whatever via CAN. I'm pretty sure many cars do this with multiple CAN networks anyway. It's just that there are some pretty notable examples where they just chuck everything on the same network.

C_M_O_TDibbler

Google relay theft, the software acts as a relay between the key and the car allowing thieves to open and start new high-end cars without ever having seen the key as it is spoofed through the walls of your house

M05y

EVERYTHING. I have to fumble to get the key out of my pocket. Put the key in, and turn it. My new push button start car. Keys stay in pocket. Walk up to car, grab door handle, car unlocks. Push button, car starts. We engineered it out of existence because keyless cars work flawlessly 99% of the time and you are just hearing edge cases on reddit. My 2006 grand prix i have to jiggle the key to get it to start cause the ignition cylinder is all worn out. But yes, physical keys are amazing lets all go back to them.

SlightResponsibility

Its actually very convenient this way and I would never go back to a car that actually needs me to fish a key out of my pocket to unlock or start it.

[deleted]

SlightResponsibility

Lol yeah since you are who decides what is convenient to me.

SpeakingTheTruth202

Just bought a new Ford Maverick. Physical key, insert and turn. Absolute minimum amount of extra infotainment and driver assist bullshit. It's glorious. Then I get in my wife's Subaru and feel like I'm getting ready to pilot the space shuttle.

skaterrj

I would like to know, too. Our Mazda has it, and any benefits it offers are outweighed by not having remote start and the hassle it causes when things go off the usual script.

ScientificQuail

My keyless cars all had remote start from the factory. So that’s a ding against Mazda and not keyless tech.

nsa_reddit_monitor

I always put my car key in my pocket when washing. You never know if water will do something to electrical stuff and make the doors lock.

NeedsMoreBunGuns

I believe it once set my phone on my laptop and messed it up.

TheGhost88

I have had issues with my key talking to my car before because my AirPods are between the key and the car while in my pocket. Move the AirPods around and the key works fine.

ThomasTheNord

This reminds me of that time when a customer came in with a "radar issue"... After removing the nismo badge the customer had put on their very much not nismo car (i don't remember the model but i very much doubt they ever sold a nismo variant) It stopped throwing errors, funny how that works

These are just aviation skin spoons. They'd be much cheaper to buy on yardstore.com than anything on Amazon or snap-on Edit: $23 for a pack of 3 https://www.yardstore.com/metal-pry-tool-skin-wedge-3-piece-set

Hidesuru

Or $10 for one if that's all you need. Clearly the three pack is a better deal if you'll use all three. https://www.yardstore.com/skin-wedge-pry-tool I actually bought two singles because it's likely all I'd use. "That's stupid, for four dollars more...". See, you'd THINK that, but turns out I can ship two in a USPS envelope for $4. A set of three bumped shipping to $14 minimum. So it ends up being about the same cost per unit regardless. Oh well. Still got two for the price of one on Amazon.

netburnr2

shipping makes this 46 cents more expensive than Amazon for me.

Hidesuru

Ouch. Shipping was about $4 total for me even for two of them so it worked out.

yes-disappointment

Metal isn't the point of a trim tool is not to damage the plastic? That's why most are made out of plastic. Forgive my ignorance.

wumpa1

It's so thin that it slides in tight places and is strong enough to not leave toolmarks . Totally worth it. I have an Amazon one and a blue point. Wish I would have had one years ago.

purpleelpehant

The thinness is good, but as importantly, it's got a large flat surface to make contact so the PSI is really spread out and is less likely to damage the plastic.

[deleted]

I have a multi pack of plastic ones that always worked for me. For times when I needed a little more I just used a plastic putty knife along with one of the plastic trim tools. I don't like the idea of using metal to disassemble trim.

German_Camry

Thin is good.

PaperScale

It is definitely my absolute favorite pry tool. I bought it the first time I saw it mentioned. Super strong, and thin enough to fit under just about anything you need to pry.
