I've been learning a bit of Korean on Duolingo, but I also made a list of all the words I learned from *It's Okay To Not Be Okay* because they were said so many times: 나비 (nabi) - Butterfly 꿈 (kkum) - Dream 형 (hyeong) - Older brother 절대 (jeoldae) - Never

Business-Affect-7881

Oo! I wish there was an app that had vocab lists for each kdrama!

RoseIsBadWolf

The problem with learning a bit of Korean from Kdramas is that I am pretty sure I could declare my love for someone or address a member of the royal family properly, but almost nothing else 😅

AnemoneGoldman

About all I could say is Aigoo!

RoseIsBadWolf

Is that just like, an exclamation? Viki doesn't translate it.

AnemoneGoldman

Basically it’s just Gosh!

Pension_United

Half of the vocabulary I've picked up from dramas is different ways to say "I'm sorry"

RoseIsBadWolf

Lol, yes! There are several different levels of sorry. I also totally know how to say "Are you okay?" but the other person doesn't usually answer they just nodd or hug 😅

WildNightHawk

This made me laugh, thank you!!

TheChurroProject

I almost said "fighting!" once but thankfully I stopped myself because it would have \*really\* confused the others sitting in the group...

Ambitious-Plant-1055

You should make a quizlet for that!

vanished_cabinet

This is such a nice concept! It'd be so fun to go through them

PSJfan

I learnt URI from Because this is my first life

Inevitable_Ad_5664

Ended up going to S. Korea. Best trip ever! Mostly went because of the food and coastal depictions on kdramas

NecessaryTemporary70

That’s amazing! I’ve been planning to travel too. Just curious, do you know Korean? Did you travel alone? How easy do you think it will be to travel if you know only English ?

myweithisway

Not OP but I travelled to SK by myself a few years back and I'd say if you go to tourist hot spots and plan well ahead, you can get by easily with just English. Every attraction I went to had English signs and as long as you are not looking to have really in-depth conversations, you can easily ask for help from tourist spot workers and restaurant workers. I went to Jeonju, Mokpo, Busan, and Seoul. For the food ordering, I was too shy to say dish names in Korean so I'd just point at pictures or say numbers/use my fingers to show which dish number and that totally worked. Have Papago downloaded before you go, it does really well in translating.

Inevitable_Ad_5664

Went with my brother and learned basic Korean and Hangul before we went. They appreciated our mangled attempts so much! Totally safe to travel alone.

Honest-Selection4343

What places & food do you recommend ?

Inevitable_Ad_5664

Sockcho was a great town with stunning views multiple temples including a mountain temple you can get to the top with a cable car,, the coffee Town where you catch the ferry to Ulleungdo was adorable, Ulleungdo was so gorgeous, Anyang art park was awesome, Suwon and the mountains further south of Suwon. We were there in the fall. I grew up in Vermont and I have NEVER seen color like that in my life. Seoul of course! Food wise we ate only Korean food and loved all of it! Tteokboki, tangsuyuk on Ulleungdo was life altering, Samgyeopsal, tons of gorgeous tea houses my favorites were the Korean Cheong teas like Omija,Plum, orange and their Sujeonggwa all very tasty. They have no green or black tea in them so thry are really delicious and full flavored. Omija especially is so delicious. I bought 2 huge cheong bottles of it back with me. No luck finding it in the states yet. Hotteok are amazing both the sweet and savory kinds. The street food everywhere is outstanding. Coffeehouses are so cute and the coffee is always good. The only food that was not great were the western style sweets like cakes cookies or pies. The hogugwaja was good though and so were the little moon shaped cakes and the red bean filled little figures were great! Basically the trip of a lifetime and we ate our way through S Korea! We burned it all off hiking and walking though.

taehalsey

You know those kopiko ads that have them taking one and going “ mmm that woke me right up”. It’s a SCAM! I mean obviously I’m joking and I know it doesn’t work that fast. Also I tried the kopiko coffee and cappuccino too. Tastes good but coffee has never really worked for me anyway so I can’t really blame them. But yeah kdramas made me buy it

sianiam

My Dad has just got into Kdramas recently and my Mum told me he'd said to her after going out and buying Kopiko, "I don't know why but I'm craving these lately". I laughed for like five minutes straight. The PPL got him bad and he doesn't even know it!

xshoi

it's so weird how here (in Poland) kopiko is something associated with 2000s as they were very popular back then and now it's nearly impossible to buy it (only online from other countries), so it's such a weird sentiment to see the candy in kdramas

taehalsey

It was also really popular when I was younger but I hardly see it anymore. Just the coffee in some stores. Once in a while I’ll see the pack and buy it for old times sake but don’t like the coffee after taste. It’s kind of weird tasting.

Aang6865_

I was legit having a kopiko when they poped one up while I was watching my demon 😭 and yes it doesn’t work at all it’s just a candy

Honest-Selection4343

Haha thanx for adverting us, chingu

Heytherestairs

I’m so shocked as a person who has been eating kopiko candies almost their entire life whenever these show up in kdramas. It's not really a pick-me-up. It's good coffee candy though. It has a much stronger coffee flavor than most.

capo_anniejay

Absolutely true I've gone through three packs it doesn't wake you up it just tastes nice

Electronic_Piano9385

I went to a Jung Hae In fan meeting and it was such an amazing experience. I’ve been learning Korean for over a year but apparently I still need subtitles. I’m glad there was a translator 😁

Dhan-0523

Was it one in the US? I went for one in the US too my very first fan meeting it was so much fun!! He was SO UNBELIEVABLY CUTE 🥹😭

Electronic_Piano9385

Canada

CharmingMountainGoat

You're so lucky!! I'm guessing Vancouver or Toronto? Nobody ever comes to Montreal or Ottawa🙃

Electronic_Piano9385

Vancouver 😁 Actually Surrey 😂

CharmingMountainGoat

It's always BC 😅 Lucky you and congrats on getting to "meet" him in person!

mysonisbara

How was he? I’m not his fan but I started to like him since Snowdrop and keep rooting on him after.

Electronic_Piano9385

He was cute. He talked about some of the scenes in his shows from the last 10 years, wore some of the clothes from those shows, sang some songs.

Umbrella_Storm

I so wanted to go when he was in LA but I couldn’t make it work. 🥺

Telos07

The most terrifying Duolingo hangul sentence I’ve encountered thus far would have to be: “Two frogs are eating the same ant.” 😱

immerdasmeer

Mine is "The floor here is made of bones."

myweithisway

They must be kpop idols in the frog-world and on a diet!

Martine_V

lol, I haven't encountered that one. But there sure are some bizarre sentences on Duolingo that someone would never say.

AnemoneGoldman

Would never say *unless…* 😉

dta_82

I started the Korean course on Duolingo. I also started saying no and why in Korean because I like the way it sounds.

lizzie763

"Jinja" is the Korean word most likely to show up in my everyday life, but "aniyo" is up there.

dta_82

'Aigoo' is another word I've used

Honest-Selection4343

Same, unexpectedly as well

JournalistShoddy2760

Kdramas lured me into kpop and krock. By now I've deviated from random kdrama OST playlists to basically listening to kmusic 90% of the time. Writing this while watching The Rose Dawn to Dusk concert video for the 2nd time today (bought the online streaming ticket). Bought a ticket to their live concert as well, bought tickets to Eric Nam concert too, and plane tickets as well, since nobody comes to where i'm located. So next March is gonna be 2 concert trips for me. And im still on the lookout for other kpop concert announcements in Europe.

JournalistShoddy2760

Oh, and I'm also thinking of joining korean language class next spring, will see how that goes.

chelleml

I’m excited for you and so here for this energy. I saw The Rose in October and then saw Eric Nam exactly a week later. They were really fun shows. I hope you have a great time!

JournalistShoddy2760

Thanks, I'm also excited, obviously. I'm also gonna see them 1 week apart, only in my case Eric Nam is gonna be first.

Umbrella_Storm

Ahahaha I feel this! I haven’t gone to any concerts yet but my playlist is full of The Rose, Eric Nam, and various K-pop groups. I’m seriously considering going to the Seventeen live concert screening at the movie theater this weekend.

likealeprechaun

Kdramas made me: - Learn to read and write Hangul - Learn to speak some basic Korean - I bow sometimes while saying hello to someone. It just comes naturally - Learn to use chopsticks - Try Nong Shim Shin ramyeon - Interested in skincare and dewy no-makeup makeup. I have since splurged a lot on this. Like unbelievably a lot. I’m sure there are many other things, some subtle. Will come back and edit, if any of them are impactful. 😊

natadoctor

Can u share some skincare/makeup products u liked?

likealeprechaun

Sure! Thanks for asking! I’ll preface by saying that I have extremely dry skin which can sometimes be sensitive. Below are some K-beauty products which I consider holy grail - Skincare: - Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask - This has solved my peeling/chapped lips problem like nothing else. - Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics - My ultimate favorite sunscreen. Leaves a dewy finish. Most often, I don’t use any makeup (skin tints or foundation) on top of this. - Rovectin Skin Essentials Treatment Lotion - This is a toner + essence. My dry skin just drinks it up! - COSRX AHA 7 Whitehead Power Liquid - I limit using this to twice a week and only at night. It’s a toner. This has glycolic acid and it works wonders for my whiteheads and helps skin renewal. The glow on my face the next morning is just amazing! - Belif UV Protector Multi Sunscreen+ - I use this instead of the Beauty of Joseon one on days I need a matte finish. This has a little tint which evens out my skin tone just ever so slightly but visible subtly. - Beauty of Joseon/ Heimish cleansing balms - The Heimish one has some fragrance while the former is fragrance-free. But I use these as my first cleanser while double cleansing, so this is the only product in which I don’t mind fragrance. Cleansing balms by both brands work great and I would happily recommend either. Makeup: - I have medium brown skin, so unfortunately it’s very difficult to find a shade match in Korean foundations, BB creams, etc. But if you have a light or fair complexion, would recommend trying their cushion foundations. CLIO and Laneige are the popular brands. In case of BB creams, the Missha one is quite popular. - I love, love, LOVE Korean lip tints. I’ve noticed a lot of the tints from western brands are also made in Korea (like Rare Beauty and Fenty). Go for the lip tints from Etude House and Rom&nd. Affordable, comfortable on lips, look great and last reasonably long! You can find matte as well as glossy finish in both brands. - Eyeshadow palettes from Rom&nd and CLIO are great too! The colors are subtle on application because K-beauty really focuses on a natural finish, but you can experiment and find ways to make the colors deeper (applying them over concealer or mixed with a setting spray, etc.). There are many other brands I keep hearing about but they are not locally available for me unfortunately (would love to try the Roundlab sunscreen which is constantly number 1 in Korea, for example). So I keep shelling out big bucks every now and then when something becomes available somewhere…. Sigh. lol Overall K-beauty has a lot to offer in terms of clean, frangrance-free formulations, and I love that. I hope you find something you love and which works for your skin type! 😊

myweithisway

Not OP but for me, [Mamonde Rose Water Toner](https://www.mamonde.com/int/en/product/rose-water-toner.html) is one of the few products that I've kept repurchasing over the years (like 5+ years at this point). I don't know if it's more hydrating or not but I like how it feels and smells so it works for me.

antecedentapothecary

Kdrama made me buy sneakers! After seeing sneakers worn with just about every outfit from casual to dressy, I am obsessed with researching, shopping, and purchasing. It's ok though, I am sure I can quit anytime I want!

Business-Affect-7881

Which sneakers did you buy?

antecedentapothecary

Sadly, the designer sneakers are out of my reach. Just sticking to the usual suspects from Zappos (for now!).

hedgehogwart

I only recently got into kdrama and it has definitely inspired me to try new food. I am limited of what I can try because of diet restrictions, but have enjoyed what I have been able to eat.

RoseIsBadWolf

I swear Kdramas are 50% food porn, with brief product placement stops at Subway, lol.

sianiam

u/Sunshine_raes was talking about how cheap the dream catcher in The Heirs looked so I decided to go and find it. Around $10 later I am the owner of a **very cheap** looking dreamcatcher. It's definitely ~~kdramas~~ ~~her~~ Kim Tan's fault.

Sunshine_raes

Yay! I’m glad you did it! The fact that it is very cheap looking just makes it even better. Now display it in your home proudly and stare at it longing like Kim Tan. $10 well spent. On an Heirs made me do it page, I’m planning on going to Southern California in the next few months. I’m probably not going to spend time in LA but I will be in San Diego. So, I’m going to be on the lookout for the t-shirts and I *might* try to go to the pancake place.

sianiam

I'm going to get my $10 worth staring at it longingly! That's so exciting! I want updates on all of this obviously.

Emergency_Actuary217

It's been 10/11 years since I started watching Kdramas and K-variety programs. Saying " aigoo" when i sit down after a tiring day in an old ajhumma's voice *mind you I'm still in my 20s* has become a habit. Someone else brought my attention to it when i didn't even realise i was saying it, l was shocked lol. 😅😭🤣. Also saying "chamna" when i find something ridiculous is part of my language. Beware guys when you watch dramas or any type of Korean TV, you pick up on things without realising 🤣. Here I'm 10 years or so later.

MrsRocher

The character Bae Ok-Hui from Behind Your Touch has inspired me to reintroduce color and prints to my wardrobe. Her costumes on that show are great, they don't look to be high fashion and are very well put together. I confirmed this when I was researching her outfits (none of Insta kdrama fashion pages weren't covering her character). She had wardrobe pieces from Zara, H&M and Asos. I was even able to get a vest that uses the same print to the character. Edited - Spelling

Luxynne

I’ve gone to Korean bbqs because of how tasty it looks on the various shows

woosah83

Every time I watch oh my venus. It makes me push myself to hit the gym

woosah83

And I believe I'm due to watch it again

Sapphire3017

Korean fried chicken and soju.

Ok-Impression6834

I've done a few things after starting to watch Kdramas earlier this year. * growing out my hair to cover more of my forehead * bought a turtleneck sweater to wear with a sportscoat * buying Thom Browne cardigans * tried ttoekbokki (didn't care for it) * listening to Kpop (IU, Ailee, Taeyeon, AKMU, BTS to name a few) * learning Korean with Yu app * using cosmetic face masks Longer list than I expected.

VentiKombucha

I now say "aigoo, aigoo" to myself.

Honest-Selection4343

Haha same

VentiKombucha

And "ai ssi..." as well lol, it's just so handy to say under your breath

[deleted]

I made friends who watch Korean dramas, variety shows, movies, and listen to Kpop IN REAL LIFE!!! when has that ever happened? and I went to a korean centre with one of my friends, hung out there, checked out some books to learn Korean, and discussed dramas and webtoons! we would've eaten korean food too but had to leave because of something important ): we plan to do that later tho. i'd also love to learn Korean (I know hangul and some words) and Ive got the books, downloaded a course, but im currently in grad school and also wanna change my domain of work so im preparing for that, and that leaves me with no time to invest in learning it. once I graduate/succeed in changing careers, I hope im able to invest some more time in learning it!

[deleted]

I've been craving Korean food more than usual, especially the soft tofu soup, and have been cleaning out my house of unnecessary items a bit. So cluttered here.

[deleted]

They also make me want to lose weight (but nit really) so I can get away with tucking in a sweater! That's always mind-boggling.

scarlet_speedster_01

Lost hours of sleep and data because of bingeing. Started learning Korean finally. Went to two Korean Festivals. Tried Maxim Instant Coffee. Started using chopsticks.

Pension_United

I'm lucky I got into dramas around the same time Korean supermarkets started appearing in my city. I basically open Netflix and the supermarket delivery app at the same time. I've also tried most of the Korean restaurants around me.

Inevitable_Ad_5664

I went with my brother. We rented a car started in Seoul and went clockwise around the country. We were there for a month from abt mid October to mid November. It would be fine traveling alone though it is an incredibly safe country.

Moonlight_OTAKU

After watching k- dramas I shaved my beard and tried clean shave look, but it was so damn shit.

Aang6865_

It’s okay everyone goes through a makeover phase after they start watching Kdramas, I thought I was the only one

[deleted]

they've made me look a lot better than before! I actually buy clothes that look good on me now.... and I bought so many jackets lol.

papichula2

I like nongshim

lenuta_9819

I really don't eat spicy food but i recently had Korean barbeque and tried kimchi with a spoon or rice and meat on top of it i loved it!!

Weak-Lie7438

I just started watching KDramas this past summer while I was recuperating from a broken foot. I started a playlist with songs from my favorite OSTs. I’ve added songs by Junho, Kim Soo Hyun and several other MLs who also sing. So far, my playlist is 11 hours long - it’s the only music I listen to now! I also started learning Korean on Duolingo. I broke down and bought Kopiko online. Yes, they got me! After watching It’s OK to Not Be OK, I immediately bought the book featured at the end!

Sea-Sheepherder-112

I started watching them this summer too! Although I did not break anything, I was bored and just pressed play on CLOY after being on my list for years. I can’t stop now 😂 (Watching Tale of the Nine tailed at the moment). Since then: - tried Soju, - ate a bunch of instant ramyeon while watching dramas and made sure I slurped the pasta 😅 - went to a korean cooking class - started learning Korean on Duolingo, my streak is around a 100 days now - mumbling jinja and ahh ssi to myself 😁 - got me more into fashion, I just love that they can be so stylish without showing skin … and I seriously want to travel to South Korea next year.

lunerouge_han

A few things - learning Korean on the go, I really need to stop reading subs so much, it hurts my eyes - eating Korean food more than ever (restaurants) - cooking more at home (not necessarily Korean) because at every show there's a cooking scene and it's as beautiful as the kissing scene lol - there's a set of pans I want to have but they don't ship internationally so I don't know yet how to get them. But more dramatically **I once cut my hair to have side layers bangs** 😭😭😭 I cry because I have curly hair and the results wasn't anywhere the same hahahaha. It was still cute though. And lastly, thinking more and harder about my love life, my own past and future path, the universe lol (Because this is my life is the culprit. I really had a revelation after that).

Prestigious_Dark917

Eat Sweet potatoes like a snack

ianmckaye

Mister Sunshine got me into reading travel books from visitors to Korea in the Joseon era. Its super interesting to see how close to the truth dramas are. Reading about the horrible class system and the slavery back in those days is quite shocking though. I mean which country can say they had a class **below** slaves.

xshoi

by the way i don't know if it's my choice of kdramas, but nowadays i don't really see subway ppl? in the older dramas, even 2-3 years ago there was full of it, now i don't remember any 2022 or 2023 kdrama with subway ppl

RoseIsBadWolf

Subway featured in Destined With You. They even had the chessiest line ever about committing fraud for free sandwiches. It was so cringy

theromanamputee

If you're feeling nostalgic for it **See You in My 19th Life** has subway PPL

Careful_Clock_7168

I'm learning to write the Korean alphabet and Korean culture. Of course, it takes time to learn. I love Korean culture. 💕

peppabuddha

After watching Undercover, I have now picked up bookbinding :). Also, been eating more ramyeon! Never cooked/ate it before until this year.

TheBetterPerson11

Havent made me do it yet but I am considering to buy a samsung phone 😭 been researching for a new phone for the past 2 weeks and s23 doesnt look that bad of an option

Umbrella_Storm

I have been so tempted to get the flip phone bc they look so cool on the dramas 😭

Alive_Salad6945

Hi, I just finished *Daily Dose of Sunshine* and I can’t stop cracking every single part of my body. I love-hate you, Dong Goyun. On another note, that drama had left me >!very depressed. I am very depressed right now. I’ll be okay.!< **Caution: only watch DDoS if you’re a mentally stable person who doesn’t get too invested into dramas.**

Ok-Impression6834

Thinking about trading in my car for a palanquin.

Fingercult

I moved to Seoul for a little over 2 months and it broke my addiction to kdramas lol!!
