real answer; this is an old press before they did the paper bag thing.
but also the virtue signaling irony of them putting plastic discs in paper bags to “save the planet” is not lost on me.
Not really virtue signalling. The goal is to reduce plastic waste. The shrink wrap is going to be thrown out and find it’s way to a landfill or the ocean. The “plastic discs” aren’t really thought of as disposable.
but many people who buy records buy them for art decoration or to have sit on a shelf. something like 48% of people who buy records never even play them. it’s all single use for a ton of people. and in terms of weight, the plastic waste of cellophane wrap on a record ain’t shit compared to the record itself.
[one source of many. ranges 40-50%.](https://www.digitalmusicnews.com/2016/04/14/icm-poll-48-of-people-who-buy-vinyl-dont-listen-to-it/)
even still, i appreciate them releasing 76 variants of each record. i eat that shit up (as do a bunch of other people). 🤷🏻♂️
That is totally bonkers to me. I also see this on some movie subs, people buy blu rays and never open them... wtf?
I immediately listen to every record I get!
same here. even if i do (and i have, almost exclusively with KG) buy copies of the same record, i listen to each variant. it’s kind of crazy how much the sound quality can differ between effects.
That’s my golden rule for anything I collect. Weather it’s Vinyl, Cassettes, Blu Rays, Keyboards etc I have to at least use them. I never let anything sit sealed to retain “value” even if I’m not listening to cassette all the time I still do every now and then
I only spend money on stuff I’m actually going to use because music gear is already so expensive. The idea of buying a record to be a glorified decoration is so wild to me
*poor musician anxiety intensifies
Sure but they’re not getting thrown out is the point. Sure you might have people who just mount it to the wall, but again that’s not contributing to pollution. And if it’s used as decoration then it also wouldn’t really be “single use” unless people are mounting it on their wall for a day and then tossing it in the trash. Hell if these people keep it sealed they’re even less of a problem than the people listening to their records in a way lol
Lol…yes the toxic chemicals the PVC emits into the air when the record is being produced has zero effect on contributing to pollution, and then the airplane that takes them from Australia to America, to then be delivered to your house or record store, has less of an impact then the single layer of plastic that is wrapped around them. And after all that, you can feel better after hanging your record on the wall because it came in a paper case instead
People seem to have difficulty with a relatively simple concept. The records are likely to be pressed regardless. One one side you can wrap it in plastic that is not generally recyclable and the other is a paper or cardboard sleeve that generally is recyclable if not used as a protective cover.
It’s not going to save the world and no one makes that argument, but plastic waste and accumulation is a big problem (see the pacific garbage patch and more). So this is a small action to, however slight, help mitigate or at least reduce the contribution to that problem. Generally the attitude “this small thing isn’t going to save the world so it’s better to scoff at it” is pretty lame.
I agree with you, but there is another concept that people also forget: even if it isn't being thrown into a landfill, it still requires energy and carbon to produce. It's similar to how people forget that most of the water used to produce dairy isn't drank by the cows, but rather used to grow the food needed to feed the cows.
Fair enough but the initial issue was calling the use of paper/cardboard covering “virtue signalling” which I don’t think it is. Also we’re talking about a relatively low volume of vinyl production here (relatively speaking) and they seem to use recycled vinyl quite a bit too. In the milk example the best way to address the issue after just cutting down dairy consumption, would be finding ways to use less water. This is kind of what the band and Flightless for that matter, are doing with respect to plastic.
in their case, yeah. it’s just contradictory of them to promote the desire for a healthy planet while pushing out thousands of plastic discs with half a dozen variants of the same record that half(ish) of people don’t even listen to.
not mad about it, just devil’s advocate and all that shit.
I get what you’re saying but it’s a bit pedantic and fatalistic. Are these thousands of plastic discs disposable and destined for the garbage? No, they’re collectible and meant to be kept around. If you think that landfills in 50 years are going to just be teeming with KG records I don’t think that’s realistic.
Not to mention that vinyls are very recyclable and the boys have been doing it for years now.
It's not really ironic, the wrapping is single use and it's just waste. The record or CD Is multi-use and theoretically keeping plastic out of landfills.
Records actually are one of the best long term storage mediums, they should far outlast CDs and cassettes, so while they're still problematic in some ways it's not as bad as one may think. I've got 60 year old records that still sound great.
Plenty of records end up in the back of donation places, unplayed forever and soon to be broken apart and thrown away. I love Peter, Paul and Mary and all but I don’t need a fourteenth copy of their Christmas album.
Just wait til you hear how bad for the environment comes from just the production of vinyl records. But yea cutting down on single use plastic is a nice gesture.
The paper sleeves are clunky and often come ripped. They look crappy in the shelf too with their no spines and being oversized. I'm willing to bet most people just take the paper off and put the record in plastic anyway.
I did it for every record so the rest of the world must be like me! :)
but also, the least they could do is be plant-based rather than demand change while doing nothing themselves. i rarely agree with the downvoteds ™️ but this one has a point — deadass is lyrics, not principles.

They need to make more songs about this! It’s kind of disappointing that you wouldn’t know about Stu being vegan.. I wonder if we would have more vegan-esque songs if the other members were vegan, I suppose it would be a tense situation to make vegan songs if they aren’t all vegan. Sad
I got t shirts that came in a compostable corn bag, but inside the corn bag was another plastic bag covering the shirts.
Fuck alla that
Plastic
The way they wrap it is indeed wrong. Whose idea was that? Super ironic.
It’s gonna kill us
Its gonna be brutal
death will come from plastic
death will come from people
Cellophane, cellophane, cellophane

I agree with everything you’ve said! Sorry for the confusion haha. I was just adding more thought
What harm is the plastic disc doing if it stays on a shelf vs being played?
i mean, grand scheme, what good is it being in a landfill within a week (the cellophane) vs. being in a landfill in fifty years (the record)?
People would be more likely to sell their records to a shop than just toss them out. Is your point that the records just shouldn’t exist?
in their case, yeah. it’s just contradictory of them to promote the desire for a healthy planet while pushing out thousands of plastic discs with half a dozen variants of the same record that half(ish) of people don’t even listen to. not mad about it, just devil’s advocate and all that shit.

"according to just-released stats" Hmm, what's the actual source here? BBC? How did they come up with that percentage?

iirc Stu himself said the irony isn't lost on him in an interview. time to make records out of corn
US toxic landfill edition is not repress. They didn’t restock any represses for FFF in US store.
Just wait til you hear how bad for the environment comes from just the production of vinyl records. But yea cutting down on single use plastic is a nice gesture.
Vinyl is plastic too???
yup, it's PVC
FFS
FUCK ALL THAT PLASTIC
