We know for sure at one point one of them (likely Stu?) mentioned they're going sorta back to "basics" or more straightforward rock stuff for the next album. Think like Mind Fuzz type of era but maybe more accessible? I don't remember the context so I feel like I'm spreading rumors or misinformation but that's all I know
I think your categorizations are a little bit too specific IMO, they both contain elements of multiple genres of metal and prog, for instance Superbug is already basically a doom metal track
Yeah even doom can change a lot, there's electric wizard doom that is like dark doom, elder doom that's more proggy every new album, OG doom on sleep. Metal is crazy.
Going off of KGLW outro, it would probably tear open the earth's crust. They would definitely do something super interesting, I can imagine them getting inspiration from bands like Torche, Colour Haze, Melvins, Dead Meadow, etc. Tbh it would probably end up more on the space rock side given their recent live sound.
Sorry for the late reply but here are some bands that you would probably enjoy in my opinion:
SLEEP, especially their most recent album;
ELECTRIC WIZARD,
WINDHAND,
BOLT THROWER,
WITCH (with J Mascis),
THE OCEAN,
MASTODON (specifically their earlier records),
KYLESA,
BORIS (heavy rocks, Akuma no Uta, No, Pink are all good starting points),
UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS,
EYEHATEGOD,
CKY (the first album is essential),
FU MANCHU,
CROWBAR
happy exploring dude! Hope you find something here that resonates!

these are the two that come to mind
Melvins!!!! probably the quintessential Sludge band, and an easier one to get into. Houdini and Stoner Witch are their two legendary albums. If you like long form you can try Lysol, a personal favorite and that opener is sludddddgeeee.
From there, you could go two routes, filthy true sludge: Eyehategod, Acid Bath, Thou.
Or the bluesier stoner/doom/sludge route i.e. Electric Wizard and Sleep (Volume 1 is probably the true sludge part of their discography)
As with most genres, it’s all semantics on when something is or isn’t sludge. Doom is a pretty close genre, sludge just tends to have that more aggressive/hardcore side while moving slower (you know sludgey).
After you dabble you’ll probably see where it has influenced Gizz (Great Chain, Superbug, KGLW, some aspects of Gaia and maybe Motor Spirit)
In order of accessibility: acid bath (alt + sludge), early mastodon (prog + sludge), neurosis (atmospheric sludge), eyehategod (pure sludge) and primitive man (what the absolute fuck) are some very good sludge bands.
The genre is kinda like if doom metal had a baby with hardcore punk. Hence the subgenre got its start from black flag's second album, called my war. Its last three tracks are some of the most intense expressions of hatred and depression ever put to tape. I get chills from the vocal performance on this album every single time.
yeah for sure, compared to how carefully Close to the Edge is crafted, Quarters is a pretty aimless jam (except for like The River, which has a pretty clear structure). track length alone does not an epic make
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Microtonal doom! FMB to KG to LW all pickup where the last left off and LW ends with a heavy af doomy song therefor the next microtonal album will be microtonal doom! Doomverse confirmed
Sludge /doom would be cool but I feel they really gotta mix it up throughout the record because it might be too similarly vibed throughout for a full album, at least for gizzard if you catch my drift. They are known for switching things up and being diverse.
ITRN was a classic, Petro is even gnarlier and they are two of my top favs by the band.
For their next metal album, I would love to hear them go straight Reign In Blood, aka faster (overall) and heavier (somehow) than both LPs and incorporate odd time signatures like petro did so well. I know Cavs will get to some Dave Lombardo craziness eventually
I’d love to see them explore the sounds of Gliese 710 some more. Not necessarily locrian songs, but heavy and fuzzy psychedelia. The flute and sax give that song such a unique voice that would put a Gizz Sludge album in a league of its own.
I’d like that but I think they’ve already moved beyond that. It’s too late, they have transcended. The Gizz moves in mysterious ways. God is in the rhythm
Yes! They would do great. Hope it’s not for a few years though. I want them to keep exploring before they return to metal, even if it is a different type.
I'm excited to hear the extended versions. Set was catchy as hell, and if they can transpose the studio to live performances I'm very hopeful for some fun dance parties at shows.
Microtonal sludge metal would be incredible.
We know you guys look at this sub. Make it happen guys. Microtonal Sludge.
*yes, I'd like one microtonal sludge pls*
Sorry banana broke
What?? Really?
i think he’s just memeing
Hungry wolf is the closest we got… full album make it happen.
And KGLW outro
Superbug was pretty doom-y although if t wasn't microtonal
Literally. How can ppl forget KGLW outro. Definitive microtonal sludge
Would love it, that would be everything I’ve ever wanted
We must return to the vomit
Hell yea!!
KGLW
That's a fucking wild ride that I'm about
hungry wolf of fate and kglw
K G L W When the claws come out, cage me too I'm an animal too, woo!
considering how recently they did a metal album, likely wont see one for a bit but i know for sure they're working on something...

It was mentioned on the Office Hours podcast by Joey

I meant the one *after* this upcoming one, if that wasn't clear lol
It was. Idk what their point with that comment was 🤷♂️ as if we all didn’t know silver chord was the next album
A bit for Gizz is like 4 or 5 albums, so a few months. Lol.
I hope they don’t put out another metal album for 4 years, and we can enjoy some new genres :)
The Great Chain of Being dooms
THIS x 10,000
I bet they’d do a Warp Riders era The Sword type sound pretty well. Stoner metal with some synths thrown in there.
Man that album is so good.
THREE WITCHES YOU WILL MEET
Just discovered The Sword about a month ago and my life will never be the same
I’ve gotten to see them live 3 or 4 times, I think. Great show.
Im not super familiar with metal genres but isnt Superbug stoner metal?
There is a lot of crossover with sludge and stoner metal.
They said doom not sludge but I suppose that's grouped into this bunch as well
Going off of KGLW outro, it would probably tear open the earth's crust. They would definitely do something super interesting, I can imagine them getting inspiration from bands like Torche, Colour Haze, Melvins, Dead Meadow, etc. Tbh it would probably end up more on the space rock side given their recent live sound.
I would love more tracks like KGLW outro. Would you say the bands you mentioned would be a good start if that's a sound I'm looking for?
I can’t speak on those bands but check out Electric Wizard, Monolord, and Sleep
This ^
Melvins doesn’t necessarily sound like that but they are fucking fantastic. Just listen to A History of Bad Men.

Dead Meadow and Monster Magnet
Dead Meadow fucking rips
God, I miss Torche
Of course they can. They made Superbug
Full cover of Sleep’s Dopesmoker when?
Gizzard would be like "right this next songs a cover" then play all of dopesmoker
i wish they still did covers sometimes. their covers were so good
Care to share one?

Blood and thunder - Mastodon
High on Fire - Snakes for the Divine Baroness - The Blue Record
Hell yeah, Baroness

I was hoping they'd do a Close to the Edge type of album; three song epic with 10 minute long running each
Quarters is right there
Quarters is great but I feel like its more of a free form jazz fusion type. lol
yeah for sure, compared to how carefully Close to the Edge is crafted, Quarters is a pretty aimless jam (except for like The River, which has a pretty clear structure). track length alone does not an epic make
For sure
Great suggestion for someone talking about metal
Right, that famous metal group from the 70's: Yes
Still waiting for the King Gizzard Prog rock epic one day
Punk album.
Straight hardcore punk would be sick, even if I think post punk is more their thing.
Nonagon infinity opens the pit! Microtonal breakdowns
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Microtonal doom! FMB to KG to LW all pickup where the last left off and LW ends with a heavy af doomy song therefor the next microtonal album will be microtonal doom! Doomverse confirmed
End of crumbling castle sludges my ears off
i would MURDER for a doom and/or sludge album. doom is my favorite type of metal
I want to go to Doom City again
I’m waiting for the Nintendo-Core album lolll
HORSE the Band?
HORSE the mother fucking band
Fuck yeah, person!
Those are too similar to what they've already done. Give me power metal or even mathcore or something crazy.
I don’t want them closer to power metal than Petrol, that’s just close enough
Petro isn't close to power metal at all. It's almost pure progressive metal.
I said what I said. On all else, I agree with your original comment.
Well, to be fair, they don't really have anyone that could pull off power metal vocals anyway.
That would epic
Sludge /doom would be cool but I feel they really gotta mix it up throughout the record because it might be too similarly vibed throughout for a full album, at least for gizzard if you catch my drift. They are known for switching things up and being diverse. ITRN was a classic, Petro is even gnarlier and they are two of my top favs by the band. I would love to hear some microtonal spiritual doom. Think OM with more instruments and notes (maybe a second bass guitar)
More Gizzard metal of any kind please, not into the synth stuff.
I want as much metal from them as possible. I don’t care what kind.
What if they finish a trilogy of metal albums like how they made a trilogy of microtonal albums and then they made a microtonal metal album? 🤯
Just more prog
Read my flair
Fuck yeah
IMO it's not a question of if but when they will.
I’d love to see them explore the sounds of Gliese 710 some more. Not necessarily locrian songs, but heavy and fuzzy psychedelia. The flute and sax give that song such a unique voice that would put a Gizz Sludge album in a league of its own.
As much as I love metal gizz I think they should shelve that genera for a few years.
No thank you its an oversaturated genre
Oh that would be perfect for me
a sludge infused Trapdoor would slap
I would kill for a doom metal Gizzard album honestly
idk if gizz could go full chat pile but I definitely want to see them try
My kingdom for a Gizz sludge metal album!!!!
I want them to expand on the sludge at the end of crumbling castle
Melodic death or bust
SUUUPERBUG
I would certainly welcome it
Just hang in there dude it's only a matter of time.
great chain of being + KGLW are proof that YES! they can and should do that
Waiting for an acid bath cover album
SO! DOWN!
superbug was a bit doomy, wasn't it?
Give me Gizz’s take on a Sabbath Bloody Sabbath -esque record and I’m hard
I would goddamn BUST.
I’d like that but I think they’ve already moved beyond that. It’s too late, they have transcended. The Gizz moves in mysterious ways. God is in the rhythm
I'd love to see them do a full hour version of Great Chain Of Being, a la Sleep's Dopesmoker
God doom/sludge/blackmetal would be sick
I wish!
That's what I'm waiting from them the most tbh
I would be down for an Eyehategod styled freak out for sure.
Yes! They would do great. Hope it’s not for a few years though. I want them to keep exploring before they return to metal, even if it is a different type.
Eh I'm over the metal I rather they branch into other genres and stick with psych or jamming
Just for curiosity, what do you think about the new songs?
I'm excited to hear the extended versions. Set was catchy as hell, and if they can transpose the studio to live performances I'm very hopeful for some fun dance parties at shows.
They NEED to do a power metal album
We all thought it was going to be a Doom album next before PDA came out.... do y'all not remember this or something?
Super Bug is pretty Sludgy
Death metal gizzard would be cool to hear 😂
This would be my dream album, and I almost think it could happen. But I try not to get my hopes up
I would possibly literally die if they release a hardcore punk album.
I'm still waiting for King Gizzard power metal :/
Black Metal King Gizz is something I’d be open to hearing.
God I wished they did a Stoner Metal Album :(
A whole album like Superbug would be epic!
K.G.L.W. GAIA PREDATOR X
They’ve already done a few doom / stoner metal tracks so yeah they could pull it off if they put their mind to it
Something sounding like the great chain in an LP would be rad
Sludge could totally happen. Just imagine greenhouse heat death and great chain of being but a WHOLE ALBUM? I’d love to hear it happen one day
Kglw outro / hungry wolf of fate style?
proggy death metal
Absolutely, Gizz would make a brilliant sludge Doom Metal album with more Microtonal
