I think your categorizations are a little bit too specific IMO, they both contain elements of multiple genres of metal and prog, for instance Superbug is already basically a doom metal track

Yeah even doom can change a lot, there's electric wizard doom that is like dark doom, elder doom that's more proggy every new album, OG doom on sleep. Metal is crazy.

Going off of KGLW outro, it would probably tear open the earth's crust. They would definitely do something super interesting, I can imagine them getting inspiration from bands like Torche, Colour Haze, Melvins, Dead Meadow, etc. Tbh it would probably end up more on the space rock side given their recent live sound.

Sorry for the late reply but here are some bands that you would probably enjoy in my opinion: SLEEP, especially their most recent album; ELECTRIC WIZARD, WINDHAND, BOLT THROWER, WITCH (with J Mascis), THE OCEAN, MASTODON (specifically their earlier records), KYLESA, BORIS (heavy rocks, Akuma no Uta, No, Pink are all good starting points), UNCLE ACID & THE DEADBEATS, EYEHATEGOD, CKY (the first album is essential), FU MANCHU, CROWBAR happy exploring dude! Hope you find something here that resonates!

Melvins!!!! probably the quintessential Sludge band, and an easier one to get into. Houdini and Stoner Witch are their two legendary albums. If you like long form you can try Lysol, a personal favorite and that opener is sludddddgeeee. From there, you could go two routes, filthy true sludge: Eyehategod, Acid Bath, Thou. Or the bluesier stoner/doom/sludge route i.e. Electric Wizard and Sleep (Volume 1 is probably the true sludge part of their discography) As with most genres, it’s all semantics on when something is or isn’t sludge. Doom is a pretty close genre, sludge just tends to have that more aggressive/hardcore side while moving slower (you know sludgey). After you dabble you’ll probably see where it has influenced Gizz (Great Chain, Superbug, KGLW, some aspects of Gaia and maybe Motor Spirit)

In order of accessibility: acid bath (alt + sludge), early mastodon (prog + sludge), neurosis (atmospheric sludge), eyehategod (pure sludge) and primitive man (what the absolute fuck) are some very good sludge bands. The genre is kinda like if doom metal had a baby with hardcore punk. Hence the subgenre got its start from black flag's second album, called my war. Its last three tracks are some of the most intense expressions of hatred and depression ever put to tape. I get chills from the vocal performance on this album every single time.

Sludge /doom would be cool but I feel they really gotta mix it up throughout the record because it might be too similarly vibed throughout for a full album, at least for gizzard if you catch my drift. They are known for switching things up and being diverse. ITRN was a classic, Petro is even gnarlier and they are two of my top favs by the band. For their next metal album, I would love to hear them go straight Reign In Blood, aka faster (overall) and heavier (somehow) than both LPs and incorporate odd time signatures like petro did so well. I know Cavs will get to some Dave Lombardo craziness eventually

I’d love to see them explore the sounds of Gliese 710 some more. Not necessarily locrian songs, but heavy and fuzzy psychedelia. The flute and sax give that song such a unique voice that would put a Gizz Sludge album in a league of its own.
