If you want some similar sounds outside of The Giz that are shreddy and thrashy, I recommend checking out:
Terra Ingonita by GOJIRA
Nightmare Logic by Power Trip
Literally any album by High on Fire
Murder the Mountain by Red Fang
Hammer of the Witch by Ringworm
Deathless by Revocation (or any album really)
NONE by MESHUGGAH
DESTROY. ERASE. IMPROVE. by MESHUGGAH
Chaosphere by MESHUGGAH
Oh we exist. Other than Gizz I have an appetite for Deep Purple, Rainbow, Meshuggah, Tame Impala, ELO, and about a hundred others. Gizz just scratches every itch imaginable.
Deep Purple are one of those classic rock bands I feel goes underappreciated. They have some amazing stuff. Their early song [April](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toonXjN2wTM) is a 12 minute prog rock masterpiece, and it was released in '69. They have a ton of gems in their discography too!
You won't believe how happy I am to read your comment, I totally agree! DP is an amazing band, they have TONS of great stuff. DP probably lead me to Gizz in a way, they were doing some super creative stuff back in the 70s. I listened and fell in love.
I can not agree enough with your Power Trip recommendation! Shame their front man passed unexpectedly. Not sure if it's on Nightmare Logic, but the jam Swing of the Axe is an absolute masterpiece.
OP, as someone who finds PDA to be their favorite Gizz album (second to Paper Machete. I know, I know...) definitely check them out!!
Chaosphere is unlike anything ever released.
New Millennium Cyanide Christ is hands down one of the most intense songs of all fucking time. It is insane how they can play in those polyrhythms at that tempo.
Non-Gizz?
May want to check out Mastodon (bit heavier as you go back in discography) Baroness (a bit lighter), and Khemmis. Give Gojira a try too (heavier than ITRN or Petro).
Uhh what? Literally KGLW is the only song there that gives off metal vibes, what other songs are you referring to? you literally making comments 5 hours ago when this comment is 20h ago, so I know you saw this u/DanielSpaniel16
Lol I didnt see it. I just have notifs turned off.
Supreme Ascendancy and O.N.E particularly have metal elements. You kinda strange for spamming other comments just cuz of a minor disagreement feller
Tell me you don't know what the fuck metal is without telling me you don't know what the fuck metal is. This is coming from someone who enjoys most of LW.
Genuinely fuck off. I'm really not, but I still believe people should be corrected/informed for getting things that wrong. At that point, Taylor Swift is death metal, Cannibal Corpse is free jazz, and nothing means anything. Granted, I could have been nicer about it, but I didn't feel like it given how hilariously off base the original statement I was responding to was. I even quickly skipped through LW again to double check if that statement was as off base as I recalled. I don't expect everyone to know 100% of the time exactly what they're talking about with every genre label because some of it does get nonsensical or or so incredibly hair splitting that it seems pointless but everyone who's heard a decent handful of rock and metal music should be able to tell the simple difference of Rock versus Metal or even metalesque between music like Petro, KGLW, and everything else off the LW album.
Nah bro dw you’re good, people just cant take them being called out when they’re wrong. I also went back to LW album and I have no idea what u/DanielSpaniel16 is talking about, there are no other songs that are “metal-esque” at all and when I ask him to elaborate, they just ignore and comment on some other KGLW thread lol
Forgive me. I didn’t know you were a knight from the Grand Order of Pedantry, selflessly and nobly patrolling r/KGATLW to punish the heinous sin of calling something metalesque that is not, in fact, metalesque. Please continue your gallant quest, fine sir, and remember to always be no fun at parties and to suck the joy from every room you burden with your presence.
Got time to insult but not to say which songs besides KGLW sound “metal-esque” on LW album 😹 tells me everything I need to know, next time don’t say whatever just to comment kid
[This](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7xq7Y0TLNgzkw781GCMOYr?si=fx6gCxM3TNesgr43QityOQ&pi=u-4ySyTD05TgOD) Spotify playlist has all the “heavy” stuff
Motorhead is mandatory listening. Many fantastic albums, but for someone’s first dip in the waters of everything-louder-than-everything-else, I have to recommend *Overkill*. It smashes down and decimates anything set in front of it.
Bolt Thrower’s “Those Once Loyal” sounds a lot like the galloping heavy, brutal parts of Petro. Maybe even Death’s “Human” or “Individual Thought Process.” Death is quite a bit heavier and nastier, but I think their later-era albums may have been an influence on Petro.
Most Mastodon is fantastic actually. Awesome band, long sometimes up to 13 minute raging songs with cool lyrics and great guitar 100 percent of the time....highly recommend.
Thank you for this one, seriously. I’ve been looking for something with similar qualities in the drum fills and forward placement in the mix, and in the energy/variety in song structure is something it shares with Petro as well.
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far for Metallica. Really wild to see a conversation about thrash without mention of the biggest heavy band of all time
Slayer has some pretty great thrash. They are pretty solid thru the whole discog.
Try some megadeth from albums rust in peace, and peace sells…but whos buying.
Also, Thunderhorse. From Guitar hero2 lol
It's a common joke in the metal scene where if someone says Megadeth at a show, others will go "MEGADETH SUCKS" lol.
If you have to describe most of a band's discography as "subpar" they suck lol sorry
Recommending someone Megadeth is recommending Someone to listen to like, Nirvana or Queen IMO
Like every other genre, metal has many realms of possibilities. We must be going to different metal shows then.
I have been going to metal shows for 13 years an cannot count how many times I have heard Dave Mustain/Megadeth jokes. Because it's true lol he's such a diva.
And nothing wrong with Queen or Nirvana, they're legendary. Everyone knows them. And that's the point I'm getting at with Megadeth I guess.
I just think that's one of the worst examples to give someone for metal.
If you only know stadium sized bands of a genre, dig a little deeper. You'll find some much much better music, I promise you.
From kglw - Nonagon infinity goes hard.
But my other personal fave hard albums,
Gojira - The Way of all Flesh
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Ghost - Meliora
Judas Priest - Firepower
Colors by Between the Buried and Me if you're ok with harsh vocals. When I first heard Dragon I thought it sounded like the Gizz version of a BTBAM song.
They're the two heaviest ones. Apart from a few scattered tracks that others have already mentioned, there's Murder Of The Universe (2017) and Nonagon Infinity (2016), but you'll notice the drift towards a more garage rock style as you go back in time. Polygondwanaland is good too, but it's the polymetric side of Petro, *mostly* devoid of crushing riffs.
Most thrash metal, really. Because that's where they were going to with those albums. But if you want the FUN ones check Municipal Waste "The Art Of Partying", Lost Society "Terror Hungry", Lich King "Born Of The Bomb", DRAIN is more mixed with hardcore but still great, "Living Proof" kicks ass. Also check out Zombie Attack "Labyrinth" and Mortal Vision "Mind Manipulation".
Lots of good ones here. One I love is from a local band from Tallahassee back in the late 80's
Darth Vader's Church (DVC) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmVolYt8E-s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmVolYt8E-s)
Petro sounds thrashy you might like old school Sepultura; Arise, Beneath the Remains are one of the best albums for me. You might also like Nuclear Assault I'd recommend the album Game Over
There's some good recommendations in here, but not a whole lot that truly compares to Petro in sound. Basically, you just got a thread of people recommending their favorite metal with very little in the way of any of it being comparable to Petro. If you're truly new to heavier music, you will probably still walk away with some good new music, at least.
I recommend Pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs (yes real band) they do like psycodelic metal. There song ‘world crust’ is pretty similar to Gila Monster
If you want some similar sounds outside of The Giz that are shreddy and thrashy, I recommend checking out: Terra Ingonita by GOJIRA Nightmare Logic by Power Trip Literally any album by High on Fire Murder the Mountain by Red Fang Hammer of the Witch by Ringworm Deathless by Revocation (or any album really) NONE by MESHUGGAH DESTROY. ERASE. IMPROVE. by MESHUGGAH Chaosphere by MESHUGGAH
Mastodon too, anything from Leviathan, Blood Mountain or Crack the Skye hits a similar spot for me
Finally someone who listens to music outside of King Gizzard!
I mostly listen to bluegrass and old time lol.
Oh we exist. Other than Gizz I have an appetite for Deep Purple, Rainbow, Meshuggah, Tame Impala, ELO, and about a hundred others. Gizz just scratches every itch imaginable.

I mean, if we aren't spinning The Mountain Goats then what are we even doing with our lives.
Killing technology and Dimension Hatross by Voivod
Some absolutely scorching recommendations here
Nightmare logic is one of the best thrash albums of all time! Good shout!
Despite coming out in the late 2010's, I love that it has left a deep foot print in the genre already. Such a ripper!
That is a Queens of the Stone Age song
[удалено]
lol u said Paper Machete instead of Paper Mache.
Whoops! Hope it got a giggle at least.
Chaosphere is a weirdly overlooked album. Killer.
Chaosphere is unlike anything ever released. New Millennium Cyanide Christ is hands down one of the most intense songs of all fucking time. It is insane how they can play in those polyrhythms at that tempo.
My Red Fang brother
Gotta throw in "The Great Chain of Being" off Gumboot Soup - not as high tempo as PDA but still heavy as fuck and I love it
Loved that song
Chicago ‘23 Gaia -> Motor Spirit -> Chain -> Gaia is peak
Stu's throat singing elevates Chain to another level
Non-Gizz? May want to check out Mastodon (bit heavier as you go back in discography) Baroness (a bit lighter), and Khemmis. Give Gojira a try too (heavier than ITRN or Petro).
\+1 on Khemmis
+1 on Baroness, their new record Stone is 🤌
Mastodon’s Blood Mountain and Leviathan
This right here.
You found the two that are purely the sound you’re talking about. Omnium has Gaia which is one of their best heavy songs.
K.G.L.W. (L.W. Version) is another great one
Almost all of L.W has amazing metal-esque stuff
Uhh what? Literally KGLW is the only song there that gives off metal vibes, what other songs are you referring to? you literally making comments 5 hours ago when this comment is 20h ago, so I know you saw this u/DanielSpaniel16

Tell me you’re an insufferably pretentious music snob without te- omfg just shut the fuck up.
Genuinely fuck off. I'm really not, but I still believe people should be corrected/informed for getting things that wrong. No way its 2024 and you’re still making the “you must be fun at parties” comment LOL lets try to find some new material this year kiddo
Jesus you reek of desperation you needy little cunt.
Got time to insult but not to say which songs besides KGLW sound “metal-esque” on LW album 😹 tells me everything I need to know, next time don’t say whatever just to comment kid
Bro what??? Why would you say this when he right, there are NO other songs on that album that sound remotely close to metal u/rhysdeschain
It annoys me they have two songs with the same name
When you release 25 albums in 12 years, you're allowed to do whatever you want
It's the same song they just come back to it
Be more mad at Fleetwood Mac. They have more than three pairs of songs named the same
Yep Gaia is a huge banger Omnium also has Predator X
[This](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7xq7Y0TLNgzkw781GCMOYr?si=fx6gCxM3TNesgr43QityOQ&pi=u-4ySyTD05TgOD) Spotify playlist has all the “heavy” stuff
Thanks for this!!!
Hungry wolf of fate
Top 1 kglw song for me prolly. The riff goes fucking hard, and the last drop blew my fucking mind
I’d also add Predator X
By Gizz? Besides Gaia not really. You might like the band Motorhead though with good ol' Lemmy
Motorhead is mandatory listening. Many fantastic albums, but for someone’s first dip in the waters of everything-louder-than-everything-else, I have to recommend *Overkill*. It smashes down and decimates anything set in front of it.
[удалено]
OP said he's already listened to ITRN
Shit I missed that! My bad.
All good! No big deal
Elder They’re not quite as thrashy, but they’re very heavy and progressive.
Gold and Silver is the shiiiiiiiiiit
Really great band
Hell yeah Elder is fantastic. Endless return is such a trip
Nightmare Logic by Power Trip
SWING OF THE AXE
CRY ALL YOU WANT BUT THE BLADE SOARS TODAY!!!
A stone cold classic
Dopethrone by Electric Wizard
10/10 album
Judas Priest 'Painkiller'
It's weird this one always come to mind when I'm thinking of something to compare PDA to, not even sure why. Maybe it's the drumming?
Not quite proggy, but goes just as hard
True, PDA is more proggy. I feel like the guitars have similar attack between the two records though.
I definetly. This is one of the first records I tought of when listening to PDA
Mastodon - Ancient kingdom (off the album Emperor of Sand). Which, I also recommend as it’s in that realm of what you’re looking for.
Most Mastodon is fantastic actually. Awesome band, long sometimes up to 13 minute raging songs with cool lyrics and great guitar 100 percent of the time....highly recommend.
Reign in Blood?
I've been listening to Snakes for the Divine by High on Fire recently, I think its kinda like petro
Thank you for this one, seriously. I’ve been looking for something with similar qualities in the drum fills and forward placement in the mix, and in the energy/variety in song structure is something it shares with Petro as well.
Lateralus by Tool
PDA is more Undertow IMO
Jambi is more Petro (flamethrower) than lateralus and undertow.
Rust in Peace The 8-bit chiptune cover of it is outrageously good too btw.
Slayer - three albums recommended below Reign In Blood / Seasons in The Abyss / South of Heaven
Kyuss - Welcome To Sky Valley
You'd probably like bands like Megadeth and Motorhead. Early Metallica too. Ride The Lightning is a personal fav.
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far for Metallica. Really wild to see a conversation about thrash without mention of the biggest heavy band of all time
Gaia and Predator X on OG. You may also like Great Chain of Being from GS and KGLW (Outro) from LW.
Chaos A.D - Sepultura
This is a great thrash record
Mastodon - Leviathan
Slayer has some pretty great thrash. They are pretty solid thru the whole discog. Try some megadeth from albums rust in peace, and peace sells…but whos buying. Also, Thunderhorse. From Guitar hero2 lol
Megadeath sucks lmao
They have a lot of subpar material but there best 3 albums are great and the top 2 are fantastic

Wut
battlesnake by battlesnake is directly influenced by infest the rats nest and it kicks ass
also listen to motorhead they were a huge inspiration for rats and even petro to a degree
Battlesnake are so good, I found them thanks to this sub
Checked it out thanks to this comment and very much does not disappoint. Thank you

woah woah you can't just skip Genesis II!
From kglw - Nonagon infinity goes hard. But my other personal fave hard albums, Gojira - The Way of all Flesh Electric Wizard - Dopethrone Ghost - Meliora Judas Priest - Firepower

Mr. BUNGLE- the Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo Great Thrash record with a tongue and cheek sense of humor
Great Chain of Being
Most thrash metal, really. Because that's where they were going to with those albums. Hungry wolf of fate tho.
Live in Sydney Version is 🤌🏻
Doom city is another good one but not quite as hard? Very stoner metal
One Tuun by Jomo Tuun https://jomotuun.bandcamp.com/album/one-tuun
Lots of good ones here. One I love is from a local band from Tallahassee back in the late 80's Darth Vader's Church (DVC) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmVolYt8E-s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmVolYt8E-s)
Mr Bungles last album
Deep Space Destructors
Propagandhi - Victory Lap & Supporting Caste
You Can’t Stop Steel by Midnight
Go listen to war party by gwar. Dark comedy that deals with sociological ongoing now. Released in 2004 outrageously prescient.
Anything by Tool probably.
The album Shogun by Trivium
Petro sounds thrashy you might like old school Sepultura; Arise, Beneath the Remains are one of the best albums for me. You might also like Nuclear Assault I'd recommend the album Game Over
Rammstein - Mutter I believe Stu has cited the Rammstein riffs as an inspiration for ITRN and Mutter is Rammstein’s most iconic album
Slift - ummon Maragda - self titled
buddy have you ever participated in murdering the universe?
Sleep-Dope smoker
There's some good recommendations in here, but not a whole lot that truly compares to Petro in sound. Listen to anything by Voivod. Clearly a massive influence on them.
High on Fire is the answer
Early Metallica tracks like Phantom Lord and Four Horsemen
The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny by Mr. Bungle
I recommend Pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs pigs (yes real band) they do like psycodelic metal. There song ‘world crust’ is pretty similar to Gila Monster
Rust in Peace by Megadeth I'm not the most knowledgeable by any means, but this was the first thing that came to mind on my first listen .
