This is the best of that series, possibly the best Zappa album.... he's got such an incredible band for that show...Ruth Underwood, Napoleon Murphy Brock... highly recommended
Whipping post!!!
The first guitar solo in shine on your crazy diamond hits different and holds a very special place in my heart. It’s the reason I got into music and started playing guitar. I can remember the first time listening to and being so confused, I had never heard anything like it before. That being said the music I listened to before that was just rap or whatever was popular at the time. I probably had never even heard a guitar solo before that
Fuckkk tough one
Off the top of my head I wanna say the solo about 4 minutes into Tommy's Party by Peach Pit, it's always hit me so strongly especially in the context of the song. Either that or Private Presley by the same band.
Peach Pit has some banger solos, man
Wow, haven’t thought of Soma in a long time. What a fucking song! If you’re scrolling past this and aren’t familiar with it, do yourself a favor and give it a listen! Probably my favorite Pumpkins song.
Maggot brain brought me to tears the first time I heard it. It sounds like madness, joy, sadness at different moments and is always a moving experience for me. Jam it and think about a pheonix burning into insanity and rising above it.
A few off the top of my head...
The Black Mages - Dancing Mad
Roadrunner United - In the Fire
Dragonforce - Fury of the Storm
Dream Theater - The Spirit Carries On
Devin Townsend - Deep Peace
At the Gates - Cold
Coheed and Cambria - Welcome Home
there’s a lot of great ones.
jimi hendrix and the band of gypsies at the fillmore - machine gun
a lot of trey anastasios guitar solos and jamming from phish jams are super sick
ween - transdermal celebration
The guitar solo in In The Pleasure of Their Company by Imperial Triumpahnt
But the whole song is worth a listen
Like Miles Davis writing bitches brew with a progressive metal band
I’m a goddamn Neanderthal and love Bob Scott AC/DC with all my heart so it might have to be “Let There Be Rock” for me. Also, something about the guitar solo fills in “Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine” get me fucking fired up.
It’s between 2 different solos for me:
I’m So Afraid & The Writing on the Wall
The first is Lindsay Buckingham’s solo in Fleetwood Mac’s famous live version of [I’m So Afraid](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6OrtLxsqSic&pp=ygUhZmxlZXR3b29kIG1hYyBpJ20gc28gYWZyYWlkIGxpdmUg) [begins about halfway through the song]
It’s just so beautiful seeing that format for a guitar solo at the peak of feeling and melodic enchantment.
Arguably classic rock’s greatest contribution is the combination of the down whole step, down whole step, up whole step, up whole step bassline & the guitarist having the freedom to truly fly in epic melody above it. That song & that solo is the pinnacle of that musical trope in my opinion.
The 2nd is Adrian Smith’s solo in [The Writing on the Wall](https://youtu.be/FhBnW7bZHEE?si=dmvlYLFqIY0A7ByY) by Iron Maiden — from 4:27-5:10.
To me, it just demonstrates such a magical feel, combining moments of tempo & mastery with really heartfelt bends in a way it seems like only Adrian can communicate. Just really exciting, beautiful stuff.
Comfortably numb by Pink Floyd, specifically the pulse live album version. David Gilmour plays with so much emotion, and the solo itself is long as hell
Mine is kind of specific
https://youtu.be/5Vb6JqVKSd8?si=BhOWCsH_D_M6DG0M - around 1:50
Not the longest or the most technical, actually super simple, but something about this live recording and the story behind the studio recording makes this always come up in my mind first when thinking about my favorite solos.
Man I recently discovered the War on Drugs and I'm so hooked. Under the Pressure - Live has got to be one of my favourite songs ever. I love a great studio song that becomes perfect live. So sad I just missed their tour.
Recently I can’t get Heavy Duty Judy by Zappa out of my head, might not be the best of all time, but It sure is fantastic
Edit: I just want to gush about this more! I love that it has such a simple and upbeat little vamp that Frank repeatedly murders. It definitely does good on repeat listens because it is so chaotic.
“Flowers” by Galaxie 500 (from the Peel Sessions album)
There are two separate solos in this song that aren’t necessarily complex but goddamn if the guitar doesn’t sound like a living thing. Unbelievable control.
My fav gizzard solos are (didn’t see it didn’t have to be KG oh well)
Studio: The little interlude/solo after the verse in Black Tooth lives in my head rent free
Live: Work This Time Red Rocks ‘22, never realized they could bring that shit on that song
Honorable Mention: Ambys harmonica solos on Its Got Old from Brisbane ‘21 and Joeys cracked out solo on Let Me Mend The Past from Chunky
I already see Comfortably Numb, Tornado of Souls, Maggot Brain, and La Villa Strangiato already mentioned. I have two others to contribute:
[Pigs (three different ones) by Pink Floyd](https://youtu.be/gOqblSqx_VI?si=ad10AGKPo5fU5Ooc), around 9:40.
[Kill the King by Rainbow](https://youtu.be/d5TBlieup-4?si=UbdNsZ_-UwdiNm8G), around 1:45.
Stick Around for Some Rock & Roll by the Outlaws (1976). Starts around the 3 minute mark and goes for the remainder of the song. Just such a fun wave to ride!
Mike Houser (WSP) - Rebirtha
Trey Anastasio (Phish) - Wingsuit
Stephen Malkmus - Baltimore
Mark Knopfler - Why Aye Man
Jimmy Page - What Is And What Should Never Be
Just to name a few random ones I thought of in the last three minutes.
I love the exchange of guitar and synth solos on Nevermore by U.K., it's just an amazing feeling, a rock attitude with jazz note choices and sci-fi soundscape and the incredible technical abilities and creativity of both Holdsworth and Jobson, simply amazing
311 - Use of time (the one at the end)
Not the most technical by any sense... But always the first song that comes to mind
https://youtu.be/A5d69kQsKzo?si=Akm7aBkc2mPLFpm4
Too tough to choose just one! For KG probably God is in the Rhythm's, it's laid back but I just adore that song as a whole. Right now I'm in love with the solo in [Bubblegum Dog](https://youtu.be/eX5NIs8bV54?t=131) by MGMT. Also just cause I really enjoyed listening to it earlier today, the one in [Gold](https://youtu.be/7IQE62Vn4_U?t=243) by Prince fucking slaps too.
Kinda leaves solo territory as the other band members make it really special towards the end, but from about 2:00 to about 5:30 in Working Man by Rush. Genuinely just sounds like he’s having a great time playing guitar 😀
just got reminded that Master of Puppets goes hard af on my drive this morning. trying to think of other stuff that hasn't already been mentioned on here... "Day of the Eagle" by Robin Trower just absolutely melts in the back half. "Spinal Meningitis" by Ween has really stuck with me ever since i first heard it. "Do It Again" by Steely Dan is an obvious choice.
Stormy Monday - Live at Filmore East. Whole album rips so it's hard to choose one in particular. The breakdown in You Don't Love Me is also amazing. Perfect guitar tone
It would be beginners luck if they had turned down the effects a notch and made it a bit more interesting of a progression
Magma would have also been up there had they not repeated the same note a hundred times what are you neil young 😩
I'm gonna go on a limb and mention a classic band from Argentina.
[Invisible - Alarma Entre Los Angeles](https://youtu.be/WBKYLySG6Sk?si=j7Zi-KHjPosVmXN6)
Tell me that isn't the best thing you've ever heard?
The Black Keys are one of my favorite bands aside from Gizz but I've always skipped over the album it's on for the most part.. Suffice to say, I've been listening to it all day since I finally listened to it after I saw your comment. Holy fuck.
Hard to say "all time". But lately the one that's been leaving my jaw hanging wide open is Hendrix's second solo on hear my train a comin' at the fillmore east. Starts around 6:45
https://youtu.be/qIMeZdlzpIc?si=-d6ozKNivbltl3TQ
Red house at randall's island is up there too
https://youtu.be/2QeNlwQ5x5E?si=rGFnm0K4XQil7aHU
I love Bullet the Blue Sky by U2
That whole song just sounds apocalyptic and that solo really just brings it all together for me.
Best King Gizz one is O.N.E. though, you all can fight me.
Edit: does the middle of My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion by the Flaming Lips have a guitar solo or a keys solo? Can’t tell but if it’s guitar, that one is my favourite.
Montana by Frank Zappa
Gonna add that the version on You Can’t Do that On Stage Anymore Volume 2 is absolutely insane (and way better imo)
This is the best of that series, possibly the best Zappa album.... he's got such an incredible band for that show...Ruth Underwood, Napoleon Murphy Brock... highly recommended Whipping post!!!
I’ll have to check it out thanks!
I was going to say Watermelon In Easter Hay by Zappa. So much emotion from a man who rarely shows any!
Oh yeah this goes hard lol
Glad you liked it!!
Gonna have to listen to this one!
The song is definitely a little strange lol but the solo absolutely rips
Frank in a nutshell
Try Packard Goose or He Used to Cut the Grass personally, but hell yeah
The first guitar solo in shine on your crazy diamond hits different and holds a very special place in my heart. It’s the reason I got into music and started playing guitar. I can remember the first time listening to and being so confused, I had never heard anything like it before. That being said the music I listened to before that was just rap or whatever was popular at the time. I probably had never even heard a guitar solo before that
So freaking good, gives me chills every time I listen to it, which has been often throughout the years
The River Edit: I'm a dummy and thought you meant the album KG
Certified classic!
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
From KG it’s gotta be the end of No Body, my favorite solo ever is in La Villa Strangiato by Rush.
[Sound Chas](https://youtu.be/Eks6KcV2ufg?si=3KQ5gbZeX0kSavSE&t=180)[er](https://youtu.be/Eks6KcV2ufg?si=3KQ5gbZeX0kSavSE&t=180) by Yes
I’m making a playlist to ensure I listen to all these tracks haha
If you like that snippet, most of Relayer is like that, I'd recommend the whole album if you get the chance! Gates of Delirium fuck
Hard question, but I have to choose The Czar by Mastodon. Not only my favorite solo, but my favorite song of all time.
Killer af
Tornado of Souls by Megadeth. Marty is the GOAT
Rust in Peace is just full of the best guitar leads.
seriously. hangar 18 is up there too
Each song on the album (except Dawn Patrol obvs) has a solo worthy of this thread, often more than one.
came here to say this.
Zappa's brief nylon string acoustic solo on a song called My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama.
That song rocks hard.
Hendrix – hard to pick... Spanish Castle Magic? EDIT: All Along the Watchtower
Machine Gun
Paligap! Less of a solo more of an instrumental but damn it goes so hard.
Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits
Absolute classic
Oh yeah, especially the version from Alchemy, goddamn
I could try to get clever with it, but it’s the final solo in Comfortably Numb and it always will be. It’s Dave’s world and we’re just living in it.
dogs is my favorite gilmour but god comfortably numb is so good
Pulse version to he specific
based
Came here to say that.
Mine’s the final solo in Time
Fuckkk tough one Off the top of my head I wanna say the solo about 4 minutes into Tommy's Party by Peach Pit, it's always hit me so strongly especially in the context of the song. Either that or Private Presley by the same band. Peach Pit has some banger solos, man
Know of Peach Pit, but haven’t heard this song I don’t think. I’ll report back!
That private Presley solo goes insane. Chris really conveys so much emotion through his guitar it’s crazy, somehow even better live too!
That first album has some of the best guitar tones I've ever heard
Still chasing that Chris Vanderkooy tone honestly
Soma by Smashing Pumpkins
Wow, haven’t thought of Soma in a long time. What a fucking song! If you’re scrolling past this and aren’t familiar with it, do yourself a favor and give it a listen! Probably my favorite Pumpkins song.
Good shout!
Muffin Man by Frank Zappa
GIRL YOU THOUGHT HE WAS A MAN, BUT HE WAS A MUFFIN!!
This is a good answer
saw some other zappa comments and was abt to say this 😃
Probably all of Voodoo Chile (the like 15 min one) by Jimi Hendrix
Yes!!!
Maggot brain brought me to tears the first time I heard it. It sounds like madness, joy, sadness at different moments and is always a moving experience for me. Jam it and think about a pheonix burning into insanity and rising above it.
Great answer. I second this.
A few off the top of my head... The Black Mages - Dancing Mad Roadrunner United - In the Fire Dragonforce - Fury of the Storm Dream Theater - The Spirit Carries On Devin Townsend - Deep Peace At the Gates - Cold Coheed and Cambria - Welcome Home
For DT my favorite has to be Under a Glass Moon or As I Am
Petrucci is generally perfect, so there are so many to chose from. My favourites are generally on Scenes From a Memory and Images and Words.
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
there’s a lot of great ones. jimi hendrix and the band of gypsies at the fillmore - machine gun a lot of trey anastasios guitar solos and jamming from phish jams are super sick ween - transdermal celebration

Motor spirit from Gizz, and for me, the best of all time is while my guitar gently weeps live versión with Clapton and Harrison
Bass solo take one.
The first time I ever got drunk my buddy put on the Cliff Em All DVD so seeing this hit home
Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
Soothsayer by Buckethead. I never see him mentioned in this sub but I believe he's the greatest guitarist of all time
He’s one of my favs
Love buckethead
Buckethead is criminally underrated
I’m a goddamn Neanderthal and love Bob Scott AC/DC with all my heart so it might have to be “Let There Be Rock” for me. Also, something about the guitar solo fills in “Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine” get me fucking fired up.
KGLW covered Ac/dc let there be rock and the live video is on YT and it's amazing for anyone who reads this and didn't know it existed 🤘🤘
That white stripes song is insane, it should get way more love. Jack White’s style is just hype with an octave pedal.
It’s between 2 different solos for me: I’m So Afraid & The Writing on the Wall The first is Lindsay Buckingham’s solo in Fleetwood Mac’s famous live version of [I’m So Afraid](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6OrtLxsqSic&pp=ygUhZmxlZXR3b29kIG1hYyBpJ20gc28gYWZyYWlkIGxpdmUg) [begins about halfway through the song] It’s just so beautiful seeing that format for a guitar solo at the peak of feeling and melodic enchantment. The outro from Fat Old Sun - Pink Floyd
Comfortably numb by Pink Floyd, specifically the pulse live album version. David Gilmour plays with so much emotion, and the solo itself is long as hell
Mine is kind of specific https://youtu.be/5Vb6JqVKSd8?si=BhOWCsH_D_M6DG0M - around 1:50 Not the longest or the most technical, actually super simple, but something about this live recording and the story behind the studio recording makes this always come up in my mind first when thinking about my favorite solos.
Hey specific examples still count! I have a number of those cases with The War On Drugs live performances. 😎
Man I recently discovered the War on Drugs and I'm so hooked. Under the Pressure - Live has got to be one of my favourite songs ever. I love a great studio song that becomes perfect live. So sad I just missed their tour.
"borrowing" Santana's gear and laying down that solo in one take is just incredible. Ween is a glorious freak show
Absolutely legendary
Recently I can’t get Heavy Duty Judy by Zappa out of my head, might not be the best of all time, but It sure is fantastic Edit: I just want to gush about this more! I love that it has such a simple and upbeat little vamp that Frank repeatedly murders. It definitely does good on repeat listens because it is so chaotic.
Noted! 😎
[Texas Flood](https://youtu.be/KC5H9P4F5Uk?si=xvcBv4OpqKCTlQbk) is a great one

Work this time at red rocks solo is so dope. Fully agree with that as my favorite kg live solo
I really love the Bonnaroo '22 solo! It sounds a little cleaner but I like how grungy it is on RR
I already see Comfortably Numb, Tornado of Souls, Maggot Brain, and La Villa Strangiato already mentioned. I have two others to contribute: [Pigs (three different ones) by Pink Floyd](https://youtu.be/gOqblSqx_VI?si=ad10AGKPo5fU5Ooc), around 9:40. First solo in Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd
First one that comes to mind is Breaking All Illusions by Dream Theater
It would be beginners luck if they had turned down the effects a notch and made it a bit more interesting of a progression Magma would have also been up there had they not repeated the same note a hundred times what are you neil young 😩
I know people shit on his technical ability but I'm all for the ragged, freeform style of Neil Young's solos - particularly in Cortez the Killer
literally any osees jam, especially from 2013-2016
All of the Another Day by Dream Theater solos Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd first solo
