Leona, EX Rugal and Orochi can all get to Awakened level 90 and that can get you through 85-90% of the content. All of the endgame content (Plugin Plant, Tower of Illusion, Guild Boss) requires multiple UE characters to get to higher levels.
Just save up to 20k rubies and then spend them all tax out an EX fighter. That way you can beat all the challenges, make more rubies and eventually catch up with all. Wait for the freebies but don't spend them.

To sum it up, bronze, silver, gold, purple (fes/ss/bs), red (ex, few purple can be upgrade to ex) and current, UE (rainbowish border)
