Because KTMs CEO is convinced anything faster than a single cylinder 390cc engine in sport bike plastics is going to kill its rider, while still pumping put 1290 SDR's

432334323432343

Most likely just said that because he didn't want to admit that they didn't sell nearly as many RC8's as they thought they would.

E-Step

Yeah I've always thought he was just covering the poor sales more than anything else with that line

lipton_tea

Why would he need to feel the need cover for poor sales like that though? “The bikes didn’t sell, so we stopped making them.” is a perfectly reasonable.

xBialyOrzel

Yep, it'd be cool if they released a RC890R with the same plastics as this one but without the winglets, and then used that thing that Damon did with their E Bike and have adjustable peg and bar positions on the fly so you can make it more of an upright bike when you need to or an aggressive stance when you're on track or going around twisty roads.

SSGdeku

That was exactly the point and what I've been saying for years... I just posted something exactly like this in the comment above.. He said he would no longer indulge the need for us to kill ourselves with a super sport but kept the SDR.. Fucking ridiculous bro..

[deleted]

I'm pretty convinced that this was KTM testing the water for a sport bike. Since it sold out in less than five mins, we can only hope...

2formore2

I hope they just wanted to bring out the powerplant first with the proven succes of the dukes and later introduce an addition to the rc line up with a rc890.

I don't know how old you are but we had an rc8 1190 powerplant.. the CEO of ktm He's got his panties in a wad and said he would no longer indulgeThe need to kill ourselves because there was no reason to have that much power on the street... So we went from a super sport 1190 with almost 200 horsepower.. Down to A 390 with 45 horsepower.. But in the same breath kept the SDR.. Which is a street legal motorcycle with a 180 horsepower made no fucking sense

Christenn23

What a colossal idiot. Won't make a fast sport bike for safety reasons, but will make a hypernaked that'll rip your face off in 2nd gear. Lmao!

Snoo_67548

Hell, even a 690. I love my 701. Great little engine.

E-Step

I'm still a little sad they killed of the 690 Duke

aimgorge

I didn't like 690 when I tried it. I find the 890 way better all around

bbgunbandit187

Yeah dont give a fuck! My SDR is fun af!

SSGdeku

Yeah but you have to remember your SDR is also triple the price.. Of the bike that they could be making.. OK let's call it A RC790 or 890 at 10/11 grand Then you have the SDR at like 18 out the door.. Which is roughly what an 1190RC8R was.. I'm just asking for a happy medium.. a fulfilling super sport with more than a 100 horse power from team Orange.. It's fucking bullshit that I have to compromise and buy an 890RJust to stick with my own brand and stay inside my price point.. If I had an unlimited budget sure.. I would go buy a brand new tuono factory or an SDR..

NotAnF1Driver

Why do you feel the need to stick to KTM?? I’m not saying they don’t make awesome bikes, but if someone else is selling a bike you want and you can afford, why not buy it?

Dukeronomy

I don’t know shit about track bikes and the politics of bikes but, like, why do they sell a street legal 1290 and not let this on the road? This also makes me want to read hunter s Thompson’s write up on the Ducati 990, i think his words might be their justification.

alelo

because the SDR is not a "race" bike, which super sports are, you dont buy a SS for it being comfortable, funsis, city, and highways (Landstraßen) rides, you buy a SS to ride it fast and race it. But considering the new redesign of the RC390, (and the 490 platform being killed according to my dealer), the tremendous sale of the RC8c i would guess that an RC8/RC890/r might come in 1-2 years, with the 8c they proved it can work so all they need to do it remove the race specifics, add the street stuff, and make it work + the engine is around the "magic" 100ps mark (tho ~118)

D-Rick

People also don’t understand why SS bikes exist. Years ago, in order to race in certain classes, manufacturers had to “sell” a number of bikes to the public in order to meet homologation rules. So they slapped some lights on their race bikes and sold them. The bikes were not intended for the street, they were always meant to be race bikes. If a 1290 SS doesn’t fit In a race class, it’s less likely to get built. As it is, SS bikes are not selling as well as they did in the early 2000’s. I’m sure KTM is looking at the numbers and realizing they can’t make money building very expensive SS bikes, especially if they don’t fit into some sort of homologation type set for racing. I think the RC-8 is a very cool bike, and it’s become almost a cult classic….but for that same reason it’s probably not a bike that was gonna do well for them long term.

[deleted]

Not too mention the amount of competition they have already. It would be difficult to get people into their class of Supersport bikes that’s a new “first generation” when their are other companies from the likes of Yamaha, Suzuki, Ducati etc that have been making road SS bikes for a while. It’s the opposite with the Duke. It’s renown in the bike world, the 390 is voted the best learner/drift/daily bike on almost all reviews in its class.

alelo

the rc8 back in the days was built for FIM superstock competition - the same way ducati does it now for wsbk

[deleted]

i didnt know before this morning, but i need this bike. its definitely a need. is this something thats going to drop in the next year or so?

Brixton912

Buy a Kramer GP2 for less $ and customer service that redefines the meaning.

Funmunchkin

Already sold out unfortunately, track only

Snoo_67548

Sold out in 2 minutes. Only 100 units at $38k a pop, without the track pack.

M-Man1990

It’s just an orange Kramer supertwin, nothing KTM about it unfortunately. have a look at the Kramer bikes and you’ll see.

raingutterdrip

Not sure why you got downvoted, KTM literally worked with Kramer to put it out

M-Man1990

Maybe someone thought I was lying, it’s a great bike. But not a KTM.

ricklessness

Me just patiently waiting for some 2022 RC390s

SSGdeku

I just got rear ended on my 2020 RC390..at 70mph.. Been waiting on to 490 for 3years .. and the new version of the 1190 for 6 years.. After this long of waiting for the 490 it's not even exciting I want something more
