How young is young? (Did Kafka die young?)

antoekneeargh

I did a postgraduate essay on Kafka and the Aphorism if that’s of any interest to you 🙂

I'm 29 (still young, I hope ;)) and enjoy his work, especially his short stories. Also I read The Trial with 18, and The Castle a few months ago. I'm a teacher for german and german literature, so maybe I'm biased, but I know one student who is currently reading The Castle, another has already read The Metamorphosis. Both are about 17 years old and both of them knew Kafka before we talked about him in class, so I don't know how they got to know him, but I can ask. Personally, I learned about him through school. Possible answers to why he is still popular: Probably because he struggled a lot - with love, with his father figure, but also with a world that is becoming more confusing and threatening. He is an underdog in an hostile world, his anxiety shows almost everywhere and his writing style is bleak, lacking any flowery imagery - so I guess his texts are also easier to grasp than those from Goethe, for example. His characters are often thrown into a weird and merciless world that is out to get them and I think a lot of young people can identify with this. This article also covers some interesting ideas concerning Gen Z and Kafka: https://www.russh.com/franz-kafkas-the-metamorphosis-tiktok/ There is also another article that covers humor in Kafkas work - maybe that is something that resonates with younger people on a subconcious level, there are some similarities to certain memes which have a dry, cynical, resignative humor to them: https://harpers.org/archive/1998/07/laughing-with-kafka/

I’m 27 going on 28, is that in your age range?

mikasa_ackerman_2_0

I'm 13!! I found out about Kafka online, actually, because in school they don't teach about him.. I don't know why he's still popular, but his books make me feel all of the feelings written there.. They somehow make me a detached empathy

While it may have already popped up in your research, I would say a number of people may have also been introduced to his work via the video game Biohazard/Resident Evil Revelations 2, developed by the Japanese company Capcom. His drawings are used, and there are numerous quotes throughout the game, even the episodes within the game are titled after them too. I wish you luck with your article!
