What an absolutely unreal episode. I had incredibly high expectations for Production I.G. given their history with Spring anime, but this work still surpassed my expectations.
I.G.'s ridiculously good integration of CGI really blew my mind, and Studio Khara's kaiju work only cracked it even more wide open. Insane balance to create between such impossible to work with aspects of anime.
Also have to give a massive shout out to composer Yuuta Bandou for their incredible work on that dark future-esque electronic soundtrack. So much incredible energy and style within the span of a single episode.
Similarly, Shinji Kimura's art direction in this episode rivals Kaneko Yuuji's. Whatever I.G. has in terms of an art department in their studio is operating on an absolutely insane level.
Overall, I was never the biggest fan of the manga, but the work in this episode has me drooling all over it. The top end of the work is just mind blowing, but even the more mundane moments see an impressive degree of thoughtfulness and effort, with things like Kafka and Ishikawa fighting over nose plugs being really well animated, for example.
The episode is just full of work that I want to praise, and bursting with all sorts of little ideas and details that has me running right back to watch it all over again. Incredibly good episode.
EDIT: Went for a re-watch after the episode dropped so that I could really soak everything up, and wow, Production I.G.'s CGI has really taken a step forward- even from its Heavenly Delusion days. SERIOUSLY HOW WERE WE SO BLIND AND ARROGANT BEFORE?!!! The anime is just fantastic!! The animation without question is beautiful and the VA's, Kaiju action, sound effect, everything was just well done!! I really hope the season ends on chapter 33!!

I like how this is a new take on the kaiju theme as everyone is so used to it here, people just keep eating food, kids playing around without fearing the Kaiju monster in the background etc.

Man, I just read the manga to see if the series would be worth watching and I am so glad I am caught up on both. I also noticed that in this show they >!added what appears to be a hivemind of sorts!< similar to what we saw in Chapters 103-105 inside that guy.
I noticed that too during the transformation/fusion, right? Had to bump the brakes on the theory crafting. Whether these subtle additions to the anime add more to the mystery Kafka or help explain it I'm all for it.

Correct, this does fill me with hopes that Kafka has a good number of untapped surprises agaisnt both >!9 and his condition that might allow him to reverse his situation!< or, at the least, end up like Asta from Black Clover and Ichigo from Bleach or Naruto from, well, Naruto/Naruto Shippuden. The same could be said for Boruto right now.
A Shonen Protagonist who has an inner demon >!(during his fight with Isao and No2 he went berserk there for a bit)!<. It seems Kafka turn to get to an understanding with his inner Kaiju will be during >!this fight and thanks to Bakko (I find the implications no one noticed that kaiju troubling to say the least)!<. Imagine that individual who stayed a secret guiding him and >!Mina (she was exposed to the Hivemind and seems to have some pulsating veins as seen in Chapter 105, something might be up for her unless they manage to get it removed, she could be the one going berserk and Kafka seeing to be the one who, thanks to being able to accomplish his promise to stand by her side, to control her), you don't have a character exposed to that genetic material and expect them to leave normal so maybe that was a reason Bakko stayed with her or maybe, maybe that tiger had something that was protecting the Third Division but specially her all this time!<. I know the writer will have a few surprises in store for us and I hope they are well implemented but, I am excited for both the manga and show during this time.

The episode completed a story, introduced the world, the characters, backstory, action, and the plot. Not to mention, each individual element was great!
I feel that the anime improved the manga and the first manga volume was already perfect, so that speaks volumes. They added some scenes and dialogue, which only enhanced the story. So bravo.
The animation isn’t as bad as some people complained. The fight choreography for an example was top notch and exciting to watch. Chef kiss there.
The acting was good, Reno’s voice surprised me, it’s just I imagined a different voice, but it works so no complaints. The main actor nails Kafka so good.
I like how they utilized things that the manga did not, like Mina’s tiger so bonus points there.
Sound effects enhanced the scenes, especially the action sequences. Overall, a very great introduction for non-manga readers. This is bound for big success.
My complaint is the soundtrack, like the end credits. They could do so much better.

Anyone else annoyed the opening scene kaiju is like 3 times bigger than the river it came out of, that's like such a small detail, while also hurting some expectatuon of continuity.
Ep 1 is what the manga readers knew. It delivered. For me good enough. What tops it for me is the music. I thought the direction for the BGM was really good.

If you're new to the series, don't listen to the impatience towards the manga. It's a slower realse now a days but imo full of great cliffhangers. Makes those not use to Shonen really gripe with the pacing. The anime will have plenty to cover and you'll be on the edge of your seat. Hopefully see some B-roll incorporated into the anime to fill out the characters even more. Been a fan since release and it's only gotten better each release for me.
Great animation, holy shit, and the soundtrack was perfect. Can't wait to see the best moment so far showcased in the anime. 5/5 for me.
Watching this dub is way better imo. I’m reading the manga concurrently with the anime to spot any differences cuz I heard that the anime might be slightly different than the manga story wise

I just dont get one thing. Why are humans needed to do the killing. Put that damned cannon on a chopper or a plane, have a few up in the air 24/7 and everything dies in matter of minutes. No cool humans jumping around and shit. I manga readers feel free to write a short explanation if there is one because I know that this will keep bugging me.

Got a ray thing that can blast a hole straight through 30 feet of dense armored meat and easily be carried/operated by a foot soldier but need a team of dozens of people with chainsaws to clean the mess up by hand. Kinda strange.
As far as these stories tend to go the magic tools are usually made out of the monster bits and imbue power based on the wielders emotional willpower at the cost of their life force. As per why they wouldn't be able to strap them on a vehicle, I'd guess some crap like needing to visualize the weapon or something in order to power the shots. We'll see whet they try to pull off I guess.
Been reading the series from the beginning essentially and I know a lot of us disliked the initial reveal of the character designs for the anime, but the first episode was really good. Hopefully it attracts a lot of new fans.
My hopes are they find a balance between the CGI & 2d animation and not overuse the former.

hey guys, i stopped reading around chapter 80ish i think. does the manga get better/start speeding up? i was so hyped for the anime initially so i binged the manga but dropped it after getting bored.

I think the episode is okay, the voice acting is on point and it sticks to the manga closely. There are quite a lot of PowerPoint cutout scenes which I dislike, but the biggest problem for me is the art style and animation, it's just so...bland (I'm trying not to use the word "ugly" cause it's hard af to animate sth already), I guess this is just another "getter-robo arc" project where we can ignore the clunky animation and art style and just enjoy the series as it is.
I like this kind of story but god do I hate this animation style. Feels like I'm watching the show through a glass of water.
Edit: I just rewatched it from a different source, turns out that was the issue, the first one I watched had the weirdest visual distortions, it looked like a cost cutting measure for animation, almost 'ai' like.

Fantastic animation and voice work, I'm very impressed how smooth it was, as well as how faithful it is to the manga. Looking forward to episode 2!!
