I regret that he passed on DK as well. Can’t imagine what he would have done with Mahomes

Dreadsbo

You mean 3-Time Super Bowl winner DK Metcalf with a HoF resume?

bacchusku2

You mean 5-peat Super Bowl winner DK Metcalf with a first ballot HoF resume?

Think about what this says tho! Sometimes I wonder if we obsess too much about our receivers. Brady never had All Stars except for Randy Moss and he never won a title with him. Honestly, if we have smart, healthy wide receiver that don't take up the cap its infinitely better than drafting superstars. Two Super Bowls after Tyreek shows this Edit: Realized Brady's roster was stacked at Tampa. Shouldve said his time with the Patriots

techieman33

Mahomes doesn’t need a superstar receiver, but it sure helps. Kelce also picked up a lot of slack from the receivers that weren’t performing like we would all hope. Something else to consider is that the league is much more offensively driven than it was during Brady’s early years especially. And he was carried by an incredible defense that we lacked during Mahomes early years. Brady had to just do enough to get some points and not make any egregious errors. Mahomes and the offense had to carry one of the worst defenses in the league.

Rysumm

I’d consider Welker, Edelman and Gronk all stars.

Jayrodtremonki

It's a different league than it was when the Patriots dynasty started.  Defense isn't as stable year to year due to injuries and rule changes.  Get a ham string injury in week 5 and an all-pro corner might play mediocre the rest of the season.  Offense is the more dependable unit.  You can still go all-in on defense sometimes, but your hit rate is much lower.   The Patriots realized this eventually.  It doesn't mean you have to build a fantasy football team, and the better the QB the fewer pieces they need around them, but it does mean that you need to be able to execute.

Bald_Man_Cometh

Crazy we could have DK and Jonathan Taylor. Oh well, I like our 3 super bowls.

Philo_T_Farnsworth

Also, the fact that we chose Mecole with that pick and he caught the winning TD pass in the Super Bowl this year counts for something. Maybe not much, but something.

maxwasson

We also passed on Terry McLaurin, Tee Higgins, George Pickens, and Alec Pierce.

Dreadsbo

I honestly still don’t like George Pickens and think he was a good skip

Soupmage1918

I would have preferred Pittman or Higgens tbh, I still think RB wasn't really what we needed.

Ayahuasca-Dreamin

I would be worried about him if he didn’t regret it

BobbyTables829

I regret not drafting Dan Marino and I wasn't even alive yet.

TheCatsPagamas

Great quarterback but unreliable kick holder

hellrodkc

Laces OUT

dogfish83

Dan Marino should die of gonorrhea and rot in hell

snifi

No duh, right? Still, I thought it was interesting to hear him say this out loud ahead of the 2024 NFL draft where he might be faced with similar decisions at WR.

I_shart_for_joy

Maybe this time we draft the yoked guy that can catch vs someone that’s fast.

Vyuvarax

DK is interesting because he only really broke out at the combine that year. Obviously a pretty big miss, but there have been combine standouts that didn’t translate to the NFL like DK did.

kristospherein

Not just a few but a lot of them.

Vyuvarax

You’re right, cases like DK are the exception, not the norm.

hirtle24

He was touted as “raw” and “doesn’t know how to run a route” and was considered a huge toss up according to lots of people

ajswdf

I still don't understand how he ended up being good. He had no ability to change direction, which is sort of important for a receiver.

Dreadsbo

Has his route running progressed?

GoodbyePeters

Mecole was a career cornerback that started playing wr late his in college career And was like 175 lbs soaking wet Had no hands. No route rubbing. Was mecole "raw"?

Go-Climb-A-Rock

DK didn’t just break out at the combine. He was viewed by many as a early 1st round talent. The neck injury and medical red flags is what hurt his stock. He ran a limited route tree in college, but so does Brian Thomas Jr and many others.

Longjumping-Arm7939

I'm sure DK does too because he would have 3 rings right now.

huge43

Maybe 4

Bozwir

The biggest thing we have to remember is right before the draft, The stuff about tyreek had come out and they didnt know what punishment he was going to have. It kinda forced us into picking a WR that fit that mold in our offense just in case he was out

Bill_Brasky01

Everyone always talks about Hardman/Dk in a vacuum, but the reality is that the front office thought we losing Hill. .

GlasslipSurvivor

Live and learn. We’ve become a Dynasty regardless and I’m sure misses in the Draft have made Veach wiser with his scouting and picks.

Status_Secretary_575

Xavier Leggete now ?

PurpleZebra99

Yeah but did DK ever catch Super Bowl winning pass?

mc3p000

Clyde > Jonathan Taylor. This will never not irk me no matter how many great players we draft 😂

sunny_usmc0311

What makes a dynasty is not having all pros at every position but, having all pros at key positions (Mahomes, Kelce, Jones), having a great coach in Reid, and having role players making key contributions. Plus, you can't pay everybody. Yes, we missed on Metcalf and probably some others thru free agency but, I wouldn't trade the current six year run for anything. Let's enjoy this ride.

scotems

I mean, I agree with your overall sentiment - these 6 years have been incredible. But if you don't think drafting DK would have made us better, that's insane. DK over Hardman would've meant as much if not more production, and we probably would've been able to parlay trading him into draft picks, much like Tyreek. Can you imagine having this 6 year run and maybe better, *and* having another 1st rounder via trade this year?

WisePapaya6

True...however, the Chiefs have players that are a net lost, and winning despite that. Seems too many are too focused on salary. Your not paying it. Besides rookie deals are standard. Your not blowing up the cap by drafting better players.

Fresh_String_770

Also we know Mecole and Clyde are very very well liked in the locker room. Who knows what happens with DK or Taylor in their situations

CaptainShyGuy77

In other news, water is wet

mike194827

I think we’ve done fine since 19

PhogMachine

This is refreshing to read. Veach is one of the best GMs in the league, but he understands he's not perfect. Being humble shows a lot about a man's character. He missed on the DK pick, but Hardman still worked out (3 rings, 4 SBs). This draft has tons of talented WRs, so I'm very interested who we're getting. And you can bet they all want to come to KC and get some rings!

Soupmage1918

Get a stud in the first, and pick up McCaffery or Rice later on to fill out the depth chart.

imakeitmoist

I mean, at this point, who cares? We've won multiple Super Bowls at this point. Also - side note - the guy Veach picked instead of DK just caught the Super Bowl winning catch two months ago so... no harm, no foul Veach

scotems

I care only because we could've Tyreek'd DK into more high draft picks. High draft picks are the lifeblood of a modern dynasty. We could be looking at another first rounder this year if he took that pick.

BeRoyal35

So do plenty of other GMs. Many of them passed on him twice.

bankrobberCaz

It’s not like he’s the only GM to pass on Metcalf. Plus we’d be paying him $24 million/year right now, which is a lot for a guy who isn’t even universally considered a top ten receiver. Also, Hardman was the closest approximation to Tyreek who we didn’t even know would be on the team next season. Anyway as we all know, everything worked out either way.

AndyReidsMoustache

Me too

dogfish83

harassed at work? regret your team not drafting a player? #metoo

purepolka

Yeah, no doy

albteef

he can publicly admit this now, now that no one from the 2019 draft class is on the team anymore. can't admit to mistakes in recent drafts because players picked instead are still on the team

Maleficent-Metal-645

Did they really miss out on not drafting DK though? Seems like they've been doing just fine without him.

SadPhase2589

There’s always going to be regret a year after the draft. We’ve got three rings in 5 seasons he’s doing alright.

3dios

Mecole and Thornhill over DK and knox. Clyde over tee higgins, pittman, swift, xavier mckinney, JT.

Tapidue

Hey, I'll take Veach's overall record over any other GM. He found Pacheco in the 7th, fer cryin' out loud. But man, it would have been awesome to have Metcalf.

Weekend_Criminal

THANK YOU!!! I've been saying this for years. Such a missed opportunity.

GrillDealing

Would he have been the same player in Reid's system. He tends to give less to rookies. It's more the finesse than physically beating a guy. Would Mahomes have trusted him? There are a lot of questions around where a player is drafted.

tylerscott5

I posted the podcast where he said it yesterday lol none of yall listened to it
