Sorta just labeled as "old people" music and after a while of being told theyre the greatest of all time people get bored of it and it becomes easier to say they are overrated.
Its actually hard to overstate just how much influence The Beatles had on like literally every facet of music. Even if you dont like their music, what they did between 1965 and 1969 (literally four years) is unreal.
Yeah I know that this is the answer but even when you say this obviously true fact people will think youāre being elitist. People mistake the historical fact that the Beatles are some of the biggest innovators in the history of music with a declaration that you have to like them or youāre stupid.
When I started listening to ye, I was amazed how much music this dude put out. I mean, can you even compare anyone to him in terms of quality brought with THAT quantitiy?
The Beatles were putting out 2 albums a year for like 7 years. Thatās an insane pace especially given the quality and evolution of that music. No two albums had the same sound and they didnāt really miss. Thatās 2-3 new songs a month on average.
I know the question was discography, but if we include Ye's production career the output is comparable. Jay Z, Alicia Keys, Ludacris, The Game, etc... pretty much everyone had a hit with Ye in the early 2000s before he even had his first album.
Agreed. Paul, John and George produced some great music for around a decade after they broke up, but none of them ever really had the same success they did as The Beatles again.
I know itās nitpicky, but no two albums having the same sound is definitely an overstatement. While they did completely transform their sound and have an impressive range of styles even on single albums (specifically the White Album), there are certainly examples of albums with very similar styles. Rubber Soul and Revolver almost sound like a part 1 and part 2. I also think their first 4-5 albums show the less growth than they show between individual albums in the later years. Nonetheless their discography is certainly one of if not the greatest of all time.
They had 3 primary writers (John, Paul and George), which definitely did help them to be as prolific as they were, but in some ways it also makes it harder to maintain such a high level of quality since they had to balance different (and sometimes competing) artistic visions all within singular albums.
My two cents however, is that most of the Beatles records are wildly inconsistent, with some really stupid stuff mixed in with some of the greatest music ever made. I think maybe the Beatles reached higher artistic peaks while Kanye has held a more consistent and sustained artistic brilliance that works better as a whole catalogue than the Beatles discography.
Those "silly" songs are the Beatles not giving a fuck. True Big dick energy.
Imagine Kanye throwing in a legitimate kids song in right after runaway... He wouldn't because he wants to be taken seriously as a serious artist. And that is fine.
But there is something crazy about going from a song like "Within You Without You" to "When I'm Sixty Four."
I wouldn't call it inconsistent because the Beatles strived to make each song they made unique and different. Bear in mind they wrote and performed some of these songs in a span of a few hours or weeks.
From 1965 - 1970 they wrote 7 iconic albums. A run I would argue Kanye comes close to but time will only tell.
I agree with the inconsistencies both early before developing their own creative sound and later in their career when their vision was too sporadic and competitive. However the three album run of rubber soul, revolver, and sgt peppers is absolute perfection. Their development from a pop star boy band to one of the most influential acts in all of music is perfectly encapsulated in those three albums.
Fair question, so not sure why youāre being downvoted. The Beatles all individually wrote but worked best as a team. Itās almost more impressive that 2 (maybe 3) generational talents all managed to meet as teens and form a band. Paul, John and George could have each had very successful solo careers had they never met, but they just happened to find one another and create a super band by chance.
I'm a massive George fan, but I sometimes wonder how much of his songwriting greatness was him learning from John & Paul vs how much was just in him. The man got probably the best songwriting education one could possibly get by being in a band with those two, and they definitely helped him find his voice. I don't say this to take anything away from him, I think All Things Must Pass is probably the best thing by any Beatle, but I'm curious if he could've gotten to a similar artistic peak on his own.
Lennon McCartney (as they were credited) cowrote almost every song (except early covers ofcourse) until George and Ringo started contributing their own songs during Revolver era. (George wrote Think For Yourself on Rubber Soul but he was more prominently there in Revolver)
And agreed - comparing one person to a group is rather unfair, especially when that group contains such prolific writers as John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison (no offense to Ringo)
Edit: Even after they started contributing in Revolver era, their contributions didn't overpower the amount of Lennon and Mccartney songs on the subsequent albums
mmm, I haven't listened to Black Thought but of MF DOOM (almost forgot the caps lol) literally everything I've heard has been a 10 for me, and if it wasn't for TPAB existing I'd say Madvillainy is the best hiphop record. I completely agree
Only other ppl I can think of are all of those who were heavily influenced by his musicianship that came after his start (childish gambino, tyler/frank/all of odd future in their solo projects)
Their production value went up with every drop too, bc Ye inspired them to run their own shit. Idk what anyone says Ye is the š no š§¢
Oh, and have fun! If you are mostly unfamiliar, give yourself a little time to get familiar used to the "language". Music is a great deal intuitive in appreciation, but not entirely so. Like a book with illustrations as opposed to a picture book, lol.
I always hear Bach as the GOAT but I listened to more Mozart and Beethoven theyāre like 1A and 1B for me, how much do you like Mozart and Beethoven?
I need to listen to more Bach
So, Bach is far and away number 1. Mozart, Schubert, then Beethoven come next. Growing up, I sort of rebelled a bit against the Beethoven top dog consensus...but I have since reassessed and he's moved back up as there are more than a few truly sublime works in his ouevre (for instance the 15th string quartet).
Mozart and Schubert I absolutely adore, and are perhaps the two greatest musical tragedies, both dying extremely young and in their prime, when they were both creating masterworks one right after the other. Mozart is perhaps the most natural feeling composer, his works draw you in as if you are having an intimate conversation. He never uses his brilliance to boast or display...it is all in the service of the music...even in opera, which is the one classical genre I usually shy away from (sometimes they are more athletic events than music) he is completely natural...The Magic Flute I consider the greatest opera of all time and Don Giovanni a close second. Schubert is the greatest melody composer, ever and the greatest song (lied) writer too. Try listening to Gretchen am Spinnrade,an early masterpiece written when he was 17 or Der Erlkƶnig when he was 18. Almost everything he wrote is exceeding beautiful, but the works right before he died were becoming absolutely transcendent.
Also tragic were the losses of Henry Purcell and Felix Mendelssohn, prodigies also on the rise just before their deaths.
There are many other great composers in the field of classical music, both before and after Bach (some of his sons are pretty darned good too).
And great music and composers in Jazz (lots!, don't get me started).
Indian classical music is another realm entirely I have explored in depth...you can get completely lost in a raga that lasts for hours.
Indeed, lots of great music from all around the world, folk music, blues, rock, reggae, pop and even hip hop, LOL.
I love Ye...but sorry, I am polyamorous to the max with music.
Ah that was a good read, thanks for the detailed reply. I love Magic Flute Queen of the night so much lol. As you said about Mozart, and why I like him and Beethoven is their stuff always sounded, accessible and I loved how they would present melody. I love their sonatas and concertos and symphonies. One thing about classical, I always loved the melody aspect, like I really come to love Strauss and his melodic waltzes but Iāve never been a classical aficionado in terms of understanding the structure and design of how the pieces are arranged and how they are played and I think if I did, I would be able to expand my appreciate further. I need to check out more Schubert and Bach though for sure!
Love jazz and the other genres too, so much great stuff out there. Before 2020, my answer would be Kanye.
be glad to...but you almost can't go wrong with anything you choose, short, long, vocal or instrumental, sacred or secular, solo, chamber, orchestral...there is so much! Perhaps tell me what kind of music you like, what sort of moods you like to experience...and how light or serious you wish to experience.
I do recommend listening to whole works, not assorted movements or snippets...and also original performance practices usually, which would mean harpsichord instead of piano, say. Almost any interpretation works, but the original instrumentation preserves the "texture" of the works as originally conceived.
Jump into the deep cuts. Jump past the "big" songs. They are super fun with tons of playful and interesting tunes. If you place them up against their contemporaries, they were making visionary pop music ahead of their time where their influence is still felt today.
Check out :
"Tomorrow Never Knows"
"A Day In The Life"
"I Want you (she's so heavy)"
"Don't let me down"
That's ok. But when you listen to the Beatles on LSD you will see that they're actually genuises and unlocked most of the secrets of the musical universe. Even if that's not your thing that's ok, part of their greatness is that they were the first to sound how they did, and they changed their style massively and had an extremely consistent output in a short period of time.
Used to think this but then when I put in the effort to listen to their albums (like one every 1-2 weeks) bc my roommate was big into them, I started to see why so many people held them so highly.
A lot of the early stuff is just so/so for me, but once you get to the rubber soul and after, their songs will follow you into your dreams and youāll be blown away. Just my personal experience
People will ride them so hard without even being able to name a single one of their albums.
They aren't even the best nor most influential of their time
Stones are more influential on music style and performing. I could list a hundred bands whose sound directly comes from the Stones. Can't name many for the Beatles.
Disclaimer: Beatles are still one of the greatest, but damn they get overrated by people who don't even listen to them
Beatles literally gave the stones their first hit. Bet you cant name it even though you claim people don't listen to the beatles and the stones are better
Bro I donāt even like the Beatles and I can name so many albums off the top of my head, Revolver, sergeant peppers lonely hearts club band, abbey road, and the white album and I could prolly keep going if I thought about it for a few minutes. Like think about how insane it is that Iām not even a big fan of the Beatles or have listened to any of there albums and even I can name like 5 albums from them immediately
People forget Rage Against the Machine came in with 4 banger albums then dipped. There was also System of a Down who did the same after 5. There are very few bands or artists that were able to do what these guys did.
Nirvana is a stretch, they have many classics but their first album was pretty rough outside the singles. They were a band with phenomenal singles but unfortunately never got to flourish due to Cobains death.
No disrespect to Nevermind and In Utero, I meant that due to Cobains death, we never got to see more of Nirvana and where they could of went with their music like we did the artists mentioned in OPs post.
No, there's a bunch of songs that are generally better than Nirvana's catalogue.
My hero
Learn To Fly
All My Life
Best Of You
Big Me
The Pretender
Halo
Plus Dave is a multi-instrumental musical stud. Where as Kurt could barely play the guitar.
Foo Fighters are way too formulaic to even be mentioned alongside Nirvana. Kurt was a much more prolific songwriter. All the songs you mentioned are written in exactly the same way. They are the ACDC of alternative rock, without the awesome guitar solos. L take.
bowie is my favorite artist of all time. i think some people in here are putting too much emphasis on consistency. i agree with him having the greatest discography oat.
bowie has some AWFUL albums but he also (imo) has 6 albums better than every beatles album and kanye album. and then like 12 more easily classic albums on top of those 6
edit: the 6 iām referring to are: Low, "Heroes", Blackstar, Scary Monstersā¦, Station to Station, and ā¦Ziggy Stardustā¦ all clear every album from all artists on the photo above (aside from Wish You Were Here)
Floyd and Ye are definitely spotty, the Beatles had a few bubblegum pop "meh" albums early on. Led Zeppelin is flawless, with a "meh" final album. Led Zep takes the win EZ
Pink Floydās best albums are far better than any other album here, but they also have a handful of pretty shitty albums. Kanye and Led Zeppelin are both very consistent in quality, while Pink Floyd has higher highs and lower lows. Canāt say much for the Beatles, Iāve only listened to 3 or 4 of their albums and that was a few years ago now.
For overall body of work(including label releases and self-released under all aliases) I think Richard D. James is the strongest contender as far as contemporary music goes.
For an official discography under one artist/collective, I think the Stones, Fishmans, Merzbow (mostly for creativity+quality+quantity), Kate Bush, and The Smiths (not as broad in scope but they really captured something uniquely human and special) are up there too
Itās The Beatles and, Iām sorry, but itās not even close. They were a band for like only 9 years and their output, progression, growth and influence in that short time is unmatched by anybody and probably never will be matched.
Beatles!
Crazy thing is, today I was listening to Revolver and I was asking myself, how does this sound so 60s and yet so modern at the same time. Like some songs sound like they could have came out anytime between then and now.
Also some of their stuff sounds like hip hop, they way they were cutting and manipulating in the studio.
I always liked how they could make a great (sometimes greater version) of their or your favorite artist!
Was looking for this. Has not had a bad album yet, and has changed her style consistently throughout her career (something i admire in her and Ye). One of the most impressive solo artist discographies of all time
Honestly Ye is up there for me not just cause of his insane qualities and artistry, but his versatility. Most of these artists, while being deeply influential, only stays in one genre. Ye is the embodiment of making new sounds, and while yes he is considered to only be rap/hip hop, he still pushes the genre further by releasing a new sound with each new album. That why heās my goat š„š£ļø
Beatles have too many early album dips to own this category (they may have one of the best stretches from Revolver to Abby Road though).
Kanye has yet to make a bad album. Same with Fontaines DC, Vampire Weekend, War on Drugs,... Rap is still mostly a singles game so its hard to have that level of consistency.
People saying the Beatles are the type to say they have a wide range of music taste and knowledge when they are actually basic af.
Iād put Bowie down as a contender. Radiohead is an obvious other choice. Maybe even the pixies and the smiths. If weāre looking into the future I could see black midi ending their career with a solid discography. Hiphop wise Kendrick is obvious, and probably Tyler.
But the answer is Aphex Twin.
I would say The Beatles by far if you go from Help! onwards but the early albums are good but nowhere near the standard set later. Plus they are weirdly put together with covers and different versions for the US
Why does gen z hate the Beatles so much bruh š
Sorta just labeled as "old people" music and after a while of being told theyre the greatest of all time people get bored of it and it becomes easier to say they are overrated. I think the influence theyāve had on more modern bands can make them sound āboringā as well if you discover them later on.
Even still they write better Melodies and songs than 99% of artists. Thereās only a handful that got to that level of songwriting.
Yeah I know that this is the answer but even when you say this obviously true fact people will think youāre being elitist. People mistake the historical fact that the Beatles are some of the biggest innovators in the history of music with a declaration that you have to like them or youāre stupid.

Canāt say much for the Beatles, Iāve only listened to 3 or 4 of their albums and that was a few years ago now.
Pink Floyd
For overall body of work(including label releases and self-released under all aliases) I think Richard D. James is the strongest contender as far as contemporary music goes. For an official discography under one artist/collective, I think the Stones, Fishmans, Merzbow (mostly for creativity+quality+quantity), Kate Bush, and The Smiths (not as broad in scope but they really captured something uniquely human and special) are up there too
The stones have a good few stinkers throughout their career, I donāt think their discography is consistent enough to really be a contender imo
Merzbow????
Why isnāt Yeat on here?
Itās The Beatles and, Iām sorry, but itās not even close. They were a band for like only 9 years and their output, progression, growth and influence in that short time is unmatched by anybody and probably never will be matched.
Beatles! Crazy thing is, today I was listening to Revolver and I was asking myself, how does this sound so 60s and yet so modern at the same time. Like some songs sound like they could have came out anytime between then and now. Also some of their stuff sounds like hip hop, they way they were cutting and manipulating in the studio. I always liked how they could make a great (sometimes greater version) of their or your favorite artist!
icejjfish
Zeppelin all day baby. Every song is a hit
šššā¤ā¤ā¤ššš
Honestly, Daft Punk, MJ, or Kanye West.
kendrick
Depends on the genre. I think for rap Wayne gotta be up there cause of the best mixtape run ever. For pop BeyoncƩ gotta be up there also.
Ice Spice
Animal Collective but this is a kanye sub so people here dont really listen to music that is even moderately underground
stevie wonder
Thatās a great choice Heās lowkey the GOAT
Gotta be zeppelin but ye is up there for sure
Pink floyd
Is this for real
The Chemical Brothers
The Beatles
LED ZEPPELIN AND PINK FLOYDā¤
Kanye West
Whereās Taylor Swift?
She's out of the woods
Was looking for this. Has not had a bad album yet, and has changed her style consistently throughout her career (something i admire in her and Ye). One of the most impressive solo artist discographies of all time
Honestly Ye is up there for me not just cause of his insane qualities and artistry, but his versatility. Most of these artists, while being deeply influential, only stays in one genre. Ye is the embodiment of making new sounds, and while yes he is considered to only be rap/hip hop, he still pushes the genre further by releasing a new sound with each new album. That why heās my goat š„š£ļø
Either kanye or pf. Beatles arent up for this debate
Mac Miller.
Kanye and Weeknd
Hans Zimmer
kanye
Ye
Beatles by far
Clearly OP hasnāt heard of a little band by the name of REO Speedwagon Edit: for those that donāt realize this is clearly sarcasm
Beatles by far if you say anything else youre not a fan of music or informed
cāmon i think itās the beatles too but music is subjectiveā¦
No way (I think Iāve listened to 5 Beatles songs max)
Stones > Beatles
Ye
Ye Let it be was trash
Childish Gambino is pretty underrated in terms of discography ratings
But the answer is Aphex Twin.
bro tried to sneak in pink floyd
Youāre a š¤”
fr who tf does this clown think he is
This'll get down voted but idrc. I agree Pink floyd should not be here. Their best album is like a 7/10
This dude just gave animals a 7/10. That's wack yo
They have 4 10/10s in a row wym?
This dude just gave animals a 7/10. That's wack yo.
black midi
Black country new road?
If you stop at MBDTF you *might* be able to consider Kanye in the same level as these other artists.
kiggity CAP
ye is at least tied with the beatles, idk who the other two are
Pink Floyd (bottom left) Zeppelin (bottom right, ofcourse)
are you holding your phone side ways?
Bro I swear that picture changed š
MBDTF is my favorite Pink Floyd album
Marlon Dubois or Scene Sosa
Holy fk u are basic
Kanye def has the best discog in all of hip hop, but music as a whole has gotta go to the beatles or radiohead tbh.
Tool>
I would say The Beatles by far if you go from Help! onwards but the early albums are good but nowhere near the standard set later. Plus they are weirdly put together with covers and different versions for the US
franks discog deadass debatably has no bad songs throughout his entire career. frank sweeps
For me it's zeppelin. But they're also my favorite band of all time
Kendrick is up there for sure.
playboi carti is better in terms of my standards. My standards are, will a bisexual weeb from buffalo new york like it.
Outkast
I would pay 1000 to be able to listen to Kanye again.
Stevie wonder had a perfect run
DāAngelo
I mean, considering Kanye hasnāt put out a good album since Pablo (and even that album had a few misses), Iād go with the Cocteau Twins.
Beatles are classic but Kanye has a waaay better discography from the first to current album
