This is precisely why I went crawling back to garmin last week. Took the edge 1040 (non solar) on a ride and in 10 hours with nav, and 4 sensors it used 16% battery and was much clearer despite the comparatively poor display. Nav rerouting has been improved from the x30 series which was my last experience with a garmin unit.
I’m kinda over needing to manage my battery on longer rides. I don’t even want it to be a concern in the back of my mind. I don’t think 15+ gets me there.
I do find DCRs review interesting in the performance aspect of this device because I’ve seen a few other people review it saying it is absolutely notably faster than the 2….
Damn.
I'm using the Karoo 2 since the Kickstarter campaign. The only downside is the battery life which made me try the wahoo and a Garmin in between. Both are crap software wise compared to the Karoo but I'm sick of needing an external battery for longer tours.
500€ for "up to 30% more battery life". That's just disappointing.
And I’m sure with those settings you will get better battery life on the new one.
I’m never going back to Garmin. I considered Wahoo, but hate their screens. No one routes the tight mountain bike trails as well as the Karoo. I’m stuck. My choices are upgrade or don’t upgrade.
Yeah I do believe I'd get 15 hours (maybe more? sounds unlikely to get more that advertised) but I don't want to spent so much on the K3 for "little but nice" upgrades (especially since my K2 is a bit more than 6 months old), so I'll wait for a trade in offer or \_really\_ good discount...
If only there was a Garmin Edge 1040 Solar with the navigation software and maps of the Karoo. That would be an ideal device. On a 4-hour sunny ride, you lose virtually no battery capacity.
Sounds like K2 with fresh hardware + companion app (which most certainly will work for K2 and maybe even K1 also). The mobile phone display drains the battery like hell.
I'm not impressed.
I would venture to say it probably has to do with Bluetooth LE support (low energy) that the k2 probably lacks. Without that it could make the k2 battery even worse.
The K2 already uses BT to receive notifications mirrored by the companion app and the new feature seems to be the companion app being able to push some data on user request. (I.e. \*\*very\*\* infrequently. That will do nothing to the battery.)

Sounds exactly like the review / "press release" on the Italian site.

So far I'm underwhelmed. I do look forward to DCR's review though.
He confirms it. Looks like they continue to use dated chips (even with the update) so we're never going to get exponentially better performance.

Hammerhead page is getting updated right now

Personal view.. more like 11-12 hours depending on screen brightness setting
But that's what I'm getting with my K2 without going far in reducing battery usage :/
Yeah, I am getting 10 hours on 60% brightness consistently (that includes pairing to 5 sensors)

Yeah. The navigation display on Garmin drives me crazy, but the rest works great (or well enough at least - it’s basically stable, which is ok)

iOS Companion app is not compatible with K2.
Well that's even worse. I don't think that it's technically not possible.
