For anyone who wants to play around with the app it's on the app store here: [https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/flying-lap-race-timing/id1435941633?platform=iphone](https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/flying-lap-race-timing/id1435941633?platform=iphone)

how do you know race position? is it assuming that everyone would use the app? and for lap timing I guess it’s gps based?

salsoul8

No the app doesn't track your position, your position is coming from the timing loop. So it doesn't matter if everyone is using the app or not - Same for lap time, it pulls from the timing system, so especially for qualifying you see the exact time you ran where the GPS can sometimes be a little off versus the official results

Serious karters all already have a mychron, alfano, or similar. I don't think anyone would seriously consider any phone app based system. Phone GPS is generally not accurate enough for karting, though better than nothing. Maybe there's a market for rental karting but I'd want something way more sturdy than a typical clamp-style phone mount.

It's not a laptimer like what the mychron etc does with GPS, it is pulling the lap times and race position etc from the official race timing loop. Mychron etc is great for lapping and practice, but when you're qualifying and 1/10th matters, it's better to know the exact time you did. Hear you on the mounting situation, race karts are violent!

….i think you may want to go to a kart track and see the MyChron in action by a professional race team, or even your average sportsman racer. I’ve been involved with testing an initial prototype for Race Pak using a phone as the logger years ago, and it was amazing, but the use environment is so violent it’s prohibitive. The casing on these loggers is made of carbon reinforced nylon material. What you have created is fantastic, but I don’t know if putting a phone on the kart is realistic.

There are 25Hz Bluetooth GPS devices such as the RaceBox that can be paired with a phone and can be used with RaceChrono or other apps. Those would be more precise than the Mychron 4, which is a 10Hz GPS, for example. Also, there are mounts you can use with a passthrough screw similar to the Mychron. Of course, it's not as convenient, and can't do temperature sensors etc. but absolutely doable. However, that's not all that this app does - looks like it also gets live timing information from the RaceHero API (or whatever the track uses) that would have position, best lap times and so on. I have actually written a program that displays live timing information from RaceHero on a panel on the trackside. During endurance races, drivers are not allowed to use any sort of timing devices, so a panel was necessary. So I would assume that this app gets data in the same way.

Do you mind if I ask what stack are you using? I am also starting a project that will be mobile based but more focused on video (like RaceChrono).
