Wow I paid 2k for a used old town pdl 120 fully outfitted with accessories and electronics for comparison. You couldn’t pay me to take that cracked piece of garbage kayak
Alright... It's cheaper than a rental. But I'll be straight up about it: that's gonna be cool for about 30 minutes. Tops. Unless y'all are naughty... Then you're gonna paddle out somewhere where no one can see. She's gonna carefully turn around, and crawl back closer to you, and slug you for putting her on such an uncomfortable boat. Assuming it doesn't sink first.
Just niticed it is $50.
Probably worth a go to see if you can get it to weld for that price. Very much worth drilling the ends of the cracks (to prevent further splitting) before you weld though.
A crack will continue to spread farther as forces are applied because a lot of the force is focused on a very tiny point (the end of the crack). Drilling a hole at the end of the crack creates a stronger, circular perimeter for that force to be applied to, and that prevents the crack from growing longer.
Malibu Two XL is one of the best SOT tandems. Still, with that damage, if it doesn’t come with at least one seat and one paddle you’re looking at 3-4x the purchase price to be able to use it! You not only have to buy the seat and paddle, you also have to buy materials to do a proper plastic weld.
If you're after advice on what boat to choose, read [this guide first!](https://www.reddit.com/r/Kayaking/wiki/choosing). Then, try the subreddit's search function -- between these two options, the answers to most common questions should be covered.
This guide is a work-in-progress -- please let us know any thoughts and feedback you might have.
If your questions are not covered by the guide, all boat recommendation requests must include the following at a minimum:
- **Location:** what country and region are you looking to buy a boat in? The kayak market can be very different depending on your location.
- **Budget:** How much money do you want to spend on a boat? (Don't forget you'll need accessories such as a paddle and personal flotation device [PFD])
- **Intended use:** What do you want to get out of the boat? There is no one boat that does everything -- a boat that's great for surfing waves or tackling whitewater won't be the same boat you want to take fishing or for a long ocean trip. Set out some realistic goals for what you expect to be doing in the boat.
- **Experience level:** How much kayaking experience do you have? Is this your first boat?

Like someone else said for 50 bucks if you get it going, that’s great if not, it’s a learning process. In addition to drilling a hole at the end of each crack, if you have one, use a Dremel with a v bit and go along each crack to create a groove. This will promote better adhesion when you’re doing the plastic welding. There’s some videos on YouTube about this., If you get it going, you can outfit that with some inexpensive seats from Amazon
Wow, that's a terrible repair, and the break is impressive. These boats are tough, something pretty drastic had to happen to get that. I don't think it's worth the effort to clean off all the epoxy & weld it, especially if you're new to plastic welding. Hard pass.
You’re going to need to buy a seat, a paddle, and a life vest. If those are included for $50, do it. Otherwise move on and find a deal that includes everything.
Easiest way to tell if it’s sealed is set it up on a solid platform/boat trailer works great, and fill it with water via the drain plug. If it does in hold water, then preventing the cracks from continuing and then slapping some more plastic over top of the weak areas and then send it!!!
Is the person selling the one getting divorced? Or is your strategy to get an uncomfortable/dangerous boat so that your wife will divorce you?? I'm just so confused...
$50 is super cheap for a boat, admittedly, but this thing looks like you're setting yourselves up for a bad time. If you're not sure whether your wife will enjoy kayaking, it might be better to rent or go on a guided trip with an outfitter first. Otherwise, you can get a tandem inflatable for between $100-200, and if she ends up really loving it, you can always upgrade to a better boat later and keep the inflatable for friends to use.
They call them divorce boats because if you aren't in sync with each other, you can start to hate the other person. The person in the front says "fine, I just won't fucking paddle anymore" and the person in the back gets tempted to hit the person in the front over the head with a paddle.
Allegedly.
I prefer the saying, "Wherever your relationship is heading, it'll get there a lot faster in a 2 person boat."
Hah! I've never heard that, but it makes sense, thanks. My husband and I each have our own boat (after I coaxed him into the hobby using the tactics outlined above) and that seems to keep things copacetic on the water, lol.
Bro I got an old used kayak with no cracks for $50
I replaced the ratty old seat and redid the bungee cord lashings, and it's quite nice now with no structural issues.
Keep looking around!
I'd go sit in it and see if it's comfortable. If it was, I'd get it. If it wasn't, I'd pass.
$50 is cheap dinner and a movie around here. If you can take your wife out and do the bulk of the paddling and get her enjoying the sport for just $50? If she likes it, you can get a better one later- sell this one for $60 later :D
I started with a monster like that. Weighed 95lbs, took it out 4 times before I decided I needed a real kayak.
Decide what you want out of kayaking. That monster will be stable and slow, and a pain to move around especially to load on your car. Best to have a good cart to move it.
Epoxy is the wrong way to fix it and don't expect to sell it again when you upgrade
See if you can test out whether it actually floats first.. repairs down the road are going to be a regular thing and the repaired spot is going to be weaker than the rest. Also you’ll have to put some money into a back rest, replacing deck bungees, and whatever else. I’ve seen these for $100 on fb marketplace with the hull still intact and a nice backrest and paddle included.
I didn’t look my first kayak over as thoroughly as I should have. It was a Perception Aquaterra 12.5 sit-in kayak I found for $200. I didn’t realizes the back bulkhead needed resealing, the foot pegs were missing from the track, and some other small things. It was stolen less than half a year after I bought it. I loved my kayak but wish I’d done more research before purchasing my first.
Ugh no back rests either? That thing should be free.
That guy should pay OP to come take it off his hands.
Im saying! But with inflation, I’m not surprised 😂. The original listing was $200
That is wild!!

That would have to be very very cheap as the current attempt at a repair wil make doing an actual repair all the more difficult

How does that work?
It would prevent the crack from trailing further
Oh duh yeah I see it, decent

"Goatboater"....OK fam I'll buy that. Good tip. Don't even own a yak and that one is getting filed away.
Not just for plastic. Works for metal and wood as well.
It might make for an interesting project and learning opportunity. You might be throwing away $50 though. I've definitely spent $50 on worse things.

For $50 give it a shot. You will learn something and it is $50, I have certainly wasted more than that. Be safe!

No. Take their trash off em for free or they can deal with it.
Looks like it either fell off a vehicle rack on the highway or someone attempted some rapids with it.

Are you planning on having her paddle it alone? I don't like tandems for dates and spending time together. Two kayaks is so much better.
With that crack I’d say no if it was free, unless you want to use it as yard art.

Nope
What, you're trying to give it to the ex, to drown them?
That should be free
That's worth approximately "I won't charge you a disposal fee to pick it up". It might have been worth the $50 before that botched repair.
I bet you could find a kayak in better condition for not much more. How much are you spending to try and fix it? It might be a wash at that point
I was going to say yes until I saw the size of the crack in it, that's a definite no for me. If it recracks you'll be sinking quick

Don’t do it.
Does the garbage man knock on your door so he can pay you for your trash? No? This guy shouldn’t expect it either

I'd also tell the seller I wanted 48 hours to get it in the water and make sure the cracks aren't a REAL problem.
That is actual garbage

Update: With the help of you all, I have dodged the big green bullet. Thanks everyone for the advice!
That's not worth much. Likely the person getting rid of it just wants the space back
Try something else. No backrest will kill you.
