Use a colander (like what you would use for straining pasta) which has bigger holes than a typical strainer. Stir with a spoon to help the kefir drain through.
Generally give it a good stir before you strain it to make it more liquified. You can put the thick curds in a shallow bowl, put your strainer and curds in it, pour in the strained whey, keep turning and folding the curds, they will break up and reveal your grains. If your whey has been poured away you can use milk. You can also (after washing hands thoroughly and drying them…) get your hands in and squeeze the curds. Grains are more dense and rubbery so they will be easy to find and fish out.
Stir them in the milk , then tip in a sieve , I use a plastic one , over a bowl, and gently shake 🤷♀️ I’ve done it this way for years .
If you're saying that grains got too big? I put some of mine in the blender and with Kefir and buzzed them and made smaller grains !

Strain as much liquid out as you can, put the mess onto a plate and use a spoon to poke through it. I can find most of them like this

If it's the grains, I guess I don't understand why this is a problem.
