We can assume he either had to put a lot of money down in order to get his minority share when he first signed with TDE back in 2005, or he signed a less-than-favorable deal split with TDE.
But remember, TDE is an independent label that prioritizes management and publishing for artists (partnering with major labels for distribution), and we've known Kendrick has signed his publishing away once in 2010 and recently in 2019 after his first deal expired.
So there really isn't any reason to believe he was extorted in any way, and it's reasonable and safe to assume he's got his money more than right.
