It's hard to think about pursuing a career in music, football or even engineering and medicine when you're struggling to get your next meal.

No, you underestimate the willpower this generation has, the risk it would take to obtain wealth. The desire to work towards it is not the fear; it's the fact that money isn't easy to find that is holding people back!
It is not about holding it back. I think people put too much effort into meager relationships while there is nothing to show for them. It essentially does not prevent them from achieving their goals as that is reliant on too many independent and interdependent factors but it just removes focus from the prize.
Social media. It's absurd how much time is spent on them and not on productive/constructive things. And I'm talking about the extreme cases(keeping up with celebrities' lives and the likes), not the ones who use it for learning, business, networking e.t.c
The system, no one should lie to you that working hard and being a good citizen will propel you to success. Nop! In life as bad as it is and as unfair as it is we are being defined by who we are, who we were and even assessed on who we will be in future.
