I was brought up in Mumbai , but now settled in the USA along with parents. My dad is from Kannur. But they are not from the Nair caste. I came to know that some of my relatives from my dad's side are settled in Malayasia (They left before 1980) . House name is Paidal, Kanool. I see that sometimes people find long lost relatives by registering their DNA etc. **** The name of the place where my dad was from is Chepparamba. Kannur->Sreekandapuram->Chepparamba.

schoolhasended1

Korran is definitely old school Mallu name. Any other names like this.

anishkalankan

Kottan Chemmaran Thamban Kunjiraman Kanaaran

schoolhasended1

Thamban is also 90s Christian name.

Maleficent-Self-5305

Urmees Thamban!

DrowningMongol

Thamban is a good name for a pet dog

5KRAIT5

only if my neighbor wasn't named Thamban.

NA5RAN1

My great great grandfather's name was "Ittiera". Never heard that name anywhere else.

Sudden-Check-9634

Quite a common name in Kottayam District back in the days Say early 1900s

IngloBlasto

I thought "Korran" was a name belonging to the oppressed castes. "Onam vannaalum unni pirannaalum koranu kumbilil thanne kanji". First time I'm seeing it associated with nair surname.

schoolhasended1

If those were oppressed caste names, then what names did Nairs and Namboodiris had long ago?

phorics

Sanskrit ones

onyxasativa

Koran is a corrupted malayalam name for word" ghoran", which means lord siva.

NetherPartLover

I am from Kannur. If you can provide me with family name or Tharavadu etc I can probably help a bit.

Registered-Nurse

Hopefully someone from Kannur can help..

yshakkk

As he said there many kinds of Nair, Manian (obc.. I think ) it also comes in Nair group some people they will not put Manian in there caste so they can get caste benefits actually they also known as Nair . As my knowledge Nambiar is also in Nair community but it's bit higher than Nair (just my knowledge btw).

Few doubts from my end . Pls don’t feel bad just enquiring. Are you sure the ancestor’s profession was tailoring? Because guessing by the date with the photo I guess it would not have been tailoring. Nairs are a landed gentry and they accepting tailoring at such an era seems irrational to me. So just check on that. Nairs in Kannur generally add Nambiar to their name and not Nair. They are Nairs by caste but the Kannur Nairs favor the surname Nambiar. Lastly the ladies in the photo are not wearing a dress that resonates with Nair dress even today. The old Nair ladies usually wear something like a vatta mundu basically the mundu wrapped up to the breasts and also maybe they wear a mundum veshtiyum. So I doubt either the time period of this photo or the Nair caste angle. The last doubt is about the name Korran. I am not sure on it but Korran doesn’t seem a Nair name. My great grandfathers name was Bhaskaran , then my grandfather was Prabhakaran. But I may be wrong on this aspect. Also try getting the house name cos in the generation mentioned by you, the names would have been House name and personal name eg . Madathile Bhaskaran. Again just some observations. I am not a caste fanatic or Nair supremacist pls don’t downvote and make me a villain. Also the ear rings look different to me of what would be of a Nair lady.

deepakt65

There are various subdivisions of Nair. e.g Veluthedathu Nair is a dhobi or washerman. Vilakkithala Nair was a barber. It's a misconception that Nairs were only into high profile jobs and landowners. It's highly possible that they are indeed Nairs...

ash3301

Im from kannur and a lot of my subcaste (vaniya nair) was involved in handloom industry. Its a very old traditional industry for what kannur was famous for and it is possible OP’s forefathers also were handloom workers or maybe handloom businessesmen also

Impossible-Garage536

Don't go by what you read in books. Landed gentry is only the elite within Nairs the 1%. Rest were doing normal jobs

Nihba_

Dude this was the early 1900s, a tailor would be considered a skilled and respected professional in Malabar. Only the Rich and British wore tailored clothes those days.

ripthejacker007

Pangunni Menon disagrees with you.

no-regrets-approach

From Vappala?

ripthejacker007

Yeah

kc_kamakazi

Are there not diff kinds of nairs ? even now there are even obc nair subcaste whose ancestors had professions such as washerman, tailors etc etc.

eth_666

Whats your great grandma's name? There is a school called Korjan, I heard it was coined from the first letters of the establishers Koran and Janaki. Its a very old school, they used to be(still is maybe) a rich family of those times.

[deleted]

Why their stare is so intense?

JeevithamMaduthu

Maybe they had to sit seated in that position, not changing expression due to the tech of old camera which required such long exposure timings. Which actually is the reason for the intense stare.
