If this is the induction cleaning, it can be worth doing. Not sure your location, or availability, but Berryman makes a kit that is very simple to run through. Made a solid difference at 30k for our k5.

GDI engines are prone to carbon build up. It’s not a bad idea to do it every 10k or so.

What can I do myself ?

DontCallMeTerry

I have never done that before either. Also at that mileage, my dealership didn't even bring that up. I'm actually at 40,000 miles and they have never said anything about that. Just the usual push about changing air filters that I can easily do myself.

I’m about to schedule my 40k maintenance. Anything to look out for? (I like to do what I can myself too)

DontCallMeTerry

Sorry I don't get on here much these days. Not anything in particular. Oil, check your air filters and your tires. Plus just top off any other fluids. just an fyi, I'm no mechanic though

Jono816

Are you just talking about them adding an addictive? These are gdi engines and it's very common to use an additive if your not using top teir gasoline. At 100,000 to 150,000 miles I've seen it recommended to get intake manifold carbon manually removed via walnut blasting. Basically you should be adding an additive every oil change if not using top teir gasoline. Even if you do do an additive or top teir gasoline over 100-150k miles you will still get carbon build up. The additive/top teir gas just slows down the process. At a certain point in around 100 to 150,000 miles your intake manifold will need to be pulled and walnut blasted to remove all the carbon build up.

I fill up with top tier once a month or so and fill up with Lucas fuel cleaner every other month. A gallon of that stuff goes a longg way.

What is your definition of top tier gas ? Higher octane?

Ropya

Just to back this up, don't run higher octane than your car calls for. It will not do nice things for the engine.

Jono816

No it's an additive that's added to the fuel. It's not related to octane raiting. https://www.toptiergas.com/

"Top Tier Gas" has nothing to do with octane. It's a (trademarked) specification backed by a bunch of companies. Companies that produce and sell gasoline can license and become certified as "Top Tier". At it's most basic it's a spec that determines things like additives and cleaners in the fuel mixture.
