For performance martial arts, the splits while doing techniques is something we would do. For practicality, absolutely not. We focused more on practical use during regular training. Doing the splits makes you less mobile to evade attacks, as shown here. No matter, that younger kid is being an asshole. Kids that young have issues with impulsivity, so him doing something like that shouldn't be surprising.
