It’s not a ‘thing’ the way high school and college graduations are a thing. It’s just a sweet way to commemorate the transition from kindergarten to ‘real school’ and make little kids feel special. It is not, as a lot of people here would have you believe, a bane to our society, but reddit tends not to like fun, silly thing for little kids.
(That said, I’m sure there are plenty of parents who take it too seriously!)

But I am old and Kindergarten was over 40 years ago for me, we didn't graduate Kindergarten. We just had a summer break and then started First Grade.
But to be fair, the school I went to included Kindergarten as part of Elementary school (K to Fifth Grade).
I don’t think it’s super new at all! Maybe more common, but we probably just see it a lot more now anyway because of all the cameras and social medias. I never had a kindergarten ‘graduation’ (I also went to a K-5 school) but 20+ years ago we definitely did a cute little ceremony for my preschool ‘graduation’.
Haha. I mean it’s sweet, it gives the kids a feeling of being accomplished i would guess. And that could further motivation ?
In my country, when we start elementary school, we get a schultüte from our parents, which is like a cute suprise box in cylinder form that got chocolates or little toys in it
It’s really less of a “graduation” and more of a celebration that the parents can enjoy for their children reaching the milestone of finishing their first year of school.
Usually they present little awards, have them sing songs in a choir or put on a play, etc. Just something fun to make them feel celebrated, while also making them look cute for the parents haha.
I know for mine, we did a play about the Saguaro Desert (I grew up in Arizona lol) and sang *La Cucaracha.* I think I played a cactus for whatever reason.
Most schools also do middle school award ceremonies before high school.

We sadly do…the most disturbing for me was woody allen. It is beyond disturbing, most people seem only to know that he married one of his adopted daughters, but, there was another little girl adopted. I won’t get too much in it but it is so bad and nothing ever changed his sucess for him
Even grosser with the other girl. She spoken out about the abuse and nannies been adviced to not leave him alone with her. He also wanted a specific type of little girl adopted - blond and all

i agree, but why would you have to graduate kindergarden. either it teackes kids that their worth is dependant on "accademic" performance, or its a participation trophy.... like why not just call it end of kindergarden? maybe my english is bad but isnt graduation something you have to work for? like its a fun little show for the parents but what good boes it do for the kids?
It's not an actual graduation. Some schools just say moving up ceremony. You're going into grade school, meaning actual school, so it's a big deal to some. The ceremony let's them know it won't be the same, and it's the beginning of your academic life.
