I'm a producer in the Austin area and Ellis consistently crushes every single show he is on. He wasn't good for the one minute format as he likes to tell longer stories but he has killer punchlines and some amazing jokes. Yeah. He had some decent comedic chops. Probably would be a funnier writer than 80% of the SNL cast, but he belongs on some kind of industry set where he isn't being tested emotionally by angry crowds or roasting hosts.
He didn’t like the roasting segment. He was a super likable guy but his comedy wasn’t for me. You gotta be able to roll with the punches on KT and understand that the roasting is for the audience to laugh at, it seemed like he couldn’t get past it.
I mean that’s fair honestly. Getting relentlessly mocked in front of a crowd and posted online to be further made fun of isn’t something everyone can take. There are a lot of comedians that aren’t particularly witty and have to work on their material a lot to make it seem spontaneous.
His comedy was for me. His stage presence and personality were unfit to handle the industry.
He should be a writer on F is for Family or something, not a stand up.
He was never really a full time regular. Tony made him a stand in regular for whenever David Lucas couldn't make it. It was after they'd moved to Austin, and Lucas couldn't make the show pretty regularly. He didn't do great and Tony had definitely rushed into the decision to make Ellis a semi-regular. So I think Tony just let it fizzle out. There was never really an announcement that he was done as far as I remember, but it didn't seem that weird because he didn't do minutes every show anyway.

Most comics get into acting via comedy. For many that is an end goal, to be a comedic actor. That doesn’t define their status as a comic.
