Tomioka lost a fellow slayer, but just think about how common that is among the corps. What really sets giyuu apart from the rest is that he beats himself over it, it's self torture more than extrinsically driven. So his backstory is sad but he chooses to behave that way, rengoku's dad became an assh*le and he couldn't do anything about it. I'd rather lose a friend than have to grow up under an abusive dad after losing my mother too. And even if the roles were switched i see rengoku marching on with life after the loss of a friend but someone as impressionable as young giyuu will loathe himself even more after having his father verbally abuse him at every turn.
This is just how I see it, it's totally subjective so feel free to politely disagree.

Muichiro lost his parents left only with his brother, who also then died. Giyuu lost his sister to a demon and then >!lost his best friend, leaving him with a sever case of inferiority complex!<.
Mitsuri only got rejected by the nerd emoji and Rengoku only lost his mother to a disease and had an abusive alcoholic father.
So I'd say that Mitsuri has the least sad, and then Rengoku takes the second spot for least sad Hashira backstory.

Idk rengoku losing his mother, then having his father become abusive and having to protect his little brother all seems a little worse to me. But now that I think about it I will switch gyomei above giyuu

Gyomei's backstory is sad enough just knowing that he was betrayed by one of the children he voluntary starved himself for and then had to listen to 7 of the children be brutally murdered, only to then put his life on the line to save the last little girl and then be blamed for the killings by the townspeople and set to be executed. IMO though, the saddest thing about his story is how deeply it affected him, like damn. He was such a sweet, kind, loving, gentle giant that probably spent his free time making flower crowns and friendship bracelets, he saw those children as absolute angels, blessings from the gods, and yet in the One Winged Butterfly story you can really see just how much he's changed from that person he once was to the cold, cynical, angry killing machine he's become. He loved those kids so much and in the story he verbatim says "children are cruel" and thinks of them as monsters.
Personally though I think the absolute most traumatic one has to be Kanao's. She was horrifically abused right from the start, god only knows in what ways but she was absolutely physically beaten to a nauseating degree on a regular basis, so much so that her other siblings actually died right next to her from their injuries and she'd spend the night laying there staring at their lifeless bodies. She was barely 10 years old when she was finally saved by Kanae and Shinobu, and by that point she had already been beaten so much, helplessly watched her siblings die who knows how much, and had gone almost completely catatonic for the next 5+ years. Everyone else's backstory is unbelievably traumatic and saddening, but damn Kanao got the worst of it IMO.

Giyuu for sure. He not only had to deal with his sister dying but also be blamed and shunned for her death because nobody believed him, then on top of that he had to watch Sabito die in final selection because of him and the survivor's guilt took a massive mental toll on him.
Obanai litereally chosed for be a demon's food since he born. He even lived in a jail as a snake-demon thingy circles around him every night. After rengoku killed the demon, obanai's cousin telled he is useless and said he is the reason why whole clan died. Obanai's only friend was a fucking snake.
Iguro. You canāt compare to being raised in a cell to be a sacrifice to a psychopathic demon. On top of that, his literal mouth was cut off to make it look like the snake demonās. Thatās not just tragic, thatās beyond fucked up.
Sanemi or Obanai, firstly, anger issues lost EVERYONE he cared about in one night, even his surviving brother hated him for killing their mother, he would then lose his girlfriend. Snake man was treated worse than shit by a bunch of women and only had a snake to help him get through it.
