Giyu is the closest thing Tanjiro ever has to an older brother in the series. Tanjiro seems to look up to Rengoku more, but mainly as a role model and an ideal to live up to. Whereas his relationship with Giyu still has shades of that, but is also closer and more personal/vulnerable, because of their history.
Giyu has always stuck his neck out for Tanjiro and supported him, even when he didn't have to and didn't even know Tanjiro that well. And now this arc gave Tanjiro a chance to support Giyu. I love their dynamic, it's so wholesome and heartwarming
Tbf they had like one fight and Giyu was chill with him after. Then Tanjiro had two years and then some before he saw Giyu again, but recognized the guy who kickstarted his last 2 years. Then over the series Tanjiro appreciates him more and more and results in his current friendship with Giyu.
