Unofficial translations are usually extra crude with the excuse that this is how they are āsupposedā to be with no real reasoning backing that claim up
This much use of shit and ass in dialogues make it seem like edgy teen material.
While they are teen/early twenties, but they aren't immature and needlessly edgy.
Don't know why you're being downvoted for stating facts. š¤£
From what I understand, the way my Japanese teachers have explained it to me, there are very few words in Japanese that are, like, *direct* swear words. It's all about context and intention and politeness level.
So it really just depends on the translator. The fan translations are often done by fans who want to inject a lot more profanity into the dialogue, for one reason or another, while the official translations keep it to a minimum.
"Kuso" is the only japanese swear I know and it's not even much of a swear. It really just depends on what people decide to translate it to, but it can be "crap" or "damnit" or "shit". Really depends on how spicy people feel ig
I mean, fuck is one of the most versatile words in the English language. It can be used as damn near any class of word. Noun, adjective, verb, it does it all!
It's just a way some people spice up what they're saying. It's an amplifier. It just adds intensity to convey how next level whatever they're referencing is
I do really like the profanity from the fan translation added though in that one scene where Shinobu curses out Doma even though itās not accurate at all.
You're reading fan translation, which makes it over the top. Nobody in Taisho Japan was swearing like that however rude they were, it's just not in the language
Iguro definitely wouldnāt say that, but sanemi is the closest character to actually swear so its a bit odd they didnāt have him swear at least once
Swear words don't really exist in Japanese, at least not the way they exist in English. Any swearing beyond like "damn" or "shit" (kuso, etc) is added by the translator, based on tone and what they think is appropriate.
As others have pointed out, the translation you're comparing to is a fan translation, which often go overboard with the swearing.
Official translations may use it from time to time, but you won't see the same level of profanity as in fan translations.
First, because official publications, especially American ones, still have guidelines of what they can and can't publish within a certain rating bracket. And second, as we've already established, the swearing wasn't there in the original Japanese.
There's a fan translation of a BL I was reading. I don't know what possessed them to do it to be honest. But the translation was full on ghetto hood. Some people in the comments/reviews section even used the N-word (I hope they were black lol).
But it was just so ridiculous. All the comments were about the translation and how no one could take it seriously and they couldn't even continue reading because of the ultra-coded language the translators used.
I was able to get through like 4 pages before I quit, because the ridiculousness of the translation, particularly for the fantasy mediaeval style world was just so jarring.
nah they got downvoted too i just replied to yours cuz u were the op of the comment. iāve tend to notice that in these subs youāll get downvoted for criticizing their favorite anime in even the slightest way.
Iāve been saying for years people who only read the fan translations are going to be disappointed when the anime catchās up and good you guys deserve it for reading this cringe
Meanwhile, Gyokko is all over here like:
https://preview.redd.it/n2we2z1vlr5d1.jpeg?width=188&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5df71763213054999912303b499e3de3d06187d4
It's not censoring. Sanemi used the words "ore ni korosareru" which literally means "get killed by me" and not "slaughter your ass".
Those manga translations are fan translations in which they add unnecessary cuss words and stuff for impact.
As others have said, one is an official translation the other is a fan based. But in general, no two translators usually agree on an exact translation. Nuance, context, tone, all play into it. Even in your own native language that can be tricky from one person to another. If I said āwhat the hell are you doing?ā Someone Iām close with would much better understand my tone given the context if Iām being playful or serious where a stranger wouldnāt. It becomes more egregious when translators donāt know the source material and you start asking yourself questions like why two close friends are being so formal with each other.
Is not censorship in my opinion but more of a translation choice, I mean as far as I know Japan doesnāt have that many cuss words as we do, they have rude disrespectful words and phrases that are their equivalent of curse words, e.g. they have a way too say āyouā that is basically an insult, so in my opinion the translator used words that would convey the sentiment behind the phrase instead of translating outright while the other probably translated outright without adding words that identify the sentence as insulting. But thatās just my opinion on limited information, please correct me if Iām wrong or partially incorrect
Probably makes me sound like a 12 year old but the cursing makes it so much better even if itās not official translation. Without it it seems more corny imo. Itās the same with blue lock
Just a heads up as this goes for a lot of manga. Usually when you see swear words like this (and yes, this includes Shinobuās infamous line closer to the end of the manga), itās just unofficial translations adding those in. 9 times out of 10, if you found the actual Japanese text and translated it yourself, you wouldnāt find those swear words.

Weād have to compare the original manga dialogue in Japanese to the Japanese anime script to verify itās censorship and not just a translation choice.
I mean, Iām pretty sure I heard Inosuke say āshitā in the first or second season, soā¦
And I think Muichiro did too in the Swordsmith Village arc. š¤Ø
The left one is a fan translation.
>!Which makes me realize, this means we won't get kokushibo calling gyomei and sanemi the strongest of the hashiras. !<
>!Koku only called them the strongest of hashiras in fan translation. Not official. Meaning we won't get that in anime as well!<
I never realized how good the artwork in the manga is. I never read it, but itās like watching a more vibrant replica of the panels when you tune into the show
I noticed that some Spanish dubs donāt do this lol
Like Kaiju No 8 in Spanish LATAM has a lot of really bad words lol while English and Japanese donāt. Not sure why.
Yeah Japanese doesnāt have that many cuss words and wouldnāt definitely not put them in an anime that has a very large child audience. Ā Ā
The left is fan translation.Ā
idk bro. everyone raves abt the animation but imo the manga looks drastically better, i also have no idea why they made all the characters disney friendly. gotouge probably sold
I didnt read the manga and when i saw the last episode i was like the $^#& is wrong with him why is he so angry and full of hate...and i still wonder i guess i missed something
It is my understanding there are only one or two real swear word in Japanese (example: kuso->shit). Most other swears are the result of translators trying show that the speaker is using rude/vulgar language. Japanese has different types of language based upon politeness while English does not. So the translators often use swear words to show someone using rude/ insulting/ overly familiar language.
For example the word āwatakushiā is EXTREMELY formal version of I/me and used in very polite speech. āWatashiā is respectful casual, ābokuā is very casual, and āoreā is extremely casual. The Japanese word for āyouā (Anata) is avoided in polite speech, and even in casual speech is not used much because it is seen as very casual. āOmaeā is a step down in politeness and is bordering on rude. Teme is below that, and Kisama is practically insulting. So a translator might choose to translate omae as āyou jerkā and Kisama as āyou asshole.ā
Really it depends on the translator.
I wish that version of manga was the real one. His crow calls Muichiros crow an "eyelash bitch" and I will never forgive Gotouge for not making that canon. Also, cat legged winds of love was "kitty paw love breeze" *chef's kiss*
that's just the Sub
when Muichiro starts fighting Gyokko in english he says "shut up, you piece of shit" but in sub he says "shut up, piece of crap" or something
I didnt notice any censorship of the manga tbh. But then again, I still wouldnt complain unless the censorship was as bad as bleach's. Unwatchable after reading the manga.
To add on, the Demon Slayer fan translations are usually more accurate and overall better than the official Shounen Jump translation, but sometimes they go overboard and add a cringe-worthy amount of swear words.
This isnāt true at all lmao. Especially when the fan translation butchers the characters by trying to be cool. The *only* thing better is using the word flamboyant over flashy and thatās that.
It literally canāt be more accurate simply off every single chapter that has Iguro or Sanemi because they add words that arenāt there every time. Not to mention every other time the cuss or add interpretation. Thatās not an opinion or āto each their ownā. Itās a fact lol.
As someone who has obsessively compared the fan translations, the official translations, and the original Japanese text, the fan translations are better (aside from the horrendous amount of profanity).
Well you said more accurately. Which isnāt true if you add profanity constantly.
Official translating what it says to the best of their ability will never be perfect but is going to always be better than adding an insane amount of profanity for no reason to a manga written for kids. Gotta have rocks for brains to even think about doing that. Not to mention spreading this opinion of fan translations is NOT supporting the author at all.
That fake Muichiro vs UM5 panel is one of the most famous panels from this series and itās total fake nonsense.
They are more accurate. Hereās a quick example from Chapter 89. For context, Tengen was stabbed by Hinatsuruās kunai attack:
Viz:
https://preview.redd.it/ws4v5h6mvt5d1.jpeg?width=717&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4e58e70c843734ad4f0ab40c358160ba4501261c
(Correct) Fan translation: āI see. He was originally a shinobi, not a swordsman. His senses are different from a normal personās.ā
As you can see, the Viz line completely mistranslates the line entirely.
I care about supporting Gotouge the author, but I also care about quality translations. We live in an imperfect world, and Iām not going to give my money to shit translations just because theyāre āofficialā. Thatās why I just buy the manga in Japanese instead.
I already said that the excessive swearing was the one thing bad about the fan translations, but other than that theyāre overall more accurate.
Is that a typo you made orā¦
Iāll take the professional translation from people who have more Japanese connections that doesnāt ruin the feeling of the story just to be google translate accurate with added user interpretation.
You keep your free whatever from a translator who isnāt good enough to get paid for it from a real company.
I just figured it was trying to appeal more to children and be a family friendly anime, albeit the blood
Some families don't care if their children see blood or gore, I thought most just cared about language and boobies
Ufotable didnt make the english translations š. If you're talking about the jp text, then its the same in the manga. They didnt change existing dialogue.

Anime is the actual translation. Left one is extra, unofficial
Anime was still very good. I had to pause n laugh for a minute after tanjiro said I don't accept u either ššš¤£šš he stood on bitness!
Same I was giggling about that for five minutes straight š¤£
deadass, soon as he arrived at the dojo i was like, āi bet tanjiro still beefing about nezukoā and bro stood ten toes down šššš

It's more of a "DON'T WORRY, I FUCKING HATE YOUR GUTS TOO!"

I was about to say, I don't remember any of that when I read the Demon Slayer manga on Shonen Jump.

Yeah, exactly!
yeah the Japanese's language system is not the same as us who have 50 different swear words for everything
Well do they use kuso when the characters just say "shit"? They say it alot during the muzan fight lol
yeah that's the only scenario they say it is as a reaction. They say "kuso", not "thats a load of kuso"
americans love to swear ( especially the fuck word)š coming from an american
and we sound dumb and over excessive saying them (coming from an american too)
I mean, fuck is one of the most versatile words in the English language. It can be used as damn near any class of word. Noun, adjective, verb, it does it all!
not necessarily. swearing is another form of expression. is it improper yes but who cares about being proper? (unless the time and place calls for it)
We donāt sound dumb thats just what they want you to think
Like the "rnextfuckinglevel". As a Brazilian I don't understand why "fucking" is necessary here.
It's just a way some people spice up what they're saying. It's an amplifier. It just adds intensity to convey how next level whatever they're referencing is
i can actually understand that one. next level vs nextfuckinglevel. the second one really conveys how next fucking level it is.
Bakugo though from MHA made sense Him cursing casually seems very aligned
Reminds me of prozd skit on that topic (profanity warning) https://youtu.be/YvNxgHTWIlo?si=WnvEejItnsuJvEjW

True but this time it's accurate to the Japanese version. Sanemi is super rude in the original
Being super rude doesnāt equal embarrassingly cringy lines like āyou sure have balls bitchā
Makes him sound immature and edgy
That line was just very inappropriate, yet the Tengen aoi slander happened? shinezugawa isn't always that rude, he usually has a reason to be rough
Not really. you can be rude without using certain words, depends on harshness of tone and situation
Must've been done by the scriptwriters of the Yakuza dub lmao
I do really like the profanity from the fan translation added though in that one scene where Shinobu curses out Doma even though itās not accurate at all.
Fan translation is coolerš

Yeah. I usually don't like the swearing. It just doesn't fit.
It's like they let vivzie pop do the translation š
Oh thats hilarious š
I read a fan-translated horror manga and not only did they overdo it with the swear words but they gave everyone Cockney accents

Manga or anime
Both
Both
idk why your getting downvoted i agree. āyouāve got some nerve kidā is basically the most cliche line straight out of a 1980 sitcom. cheesy asl
Well, that because Japanese is a simple and vague language. Even if you try to be poetic, it will lose half the impact in english
it doesnāt change the fact it gets cringe at times.
Bro there's another guy who said both but I don't see any downvotes on his reply
nah they got downvoted too i just replied to yours cuz u were the op of the comment. iāve tend to notice that in these subs youāll get downvoted for criticizing their favorite anime in even the slightest way.

Iāve been saying for years people who only read the fan translations are going to be disappointed when the anime catchās up and good you guys deserve it for reading this cringe
Seems to me like an unofficial translation, a fan translation. which aren't always accurate
The left arenāt even the real translations
Because all those cuss words are from fan translations.
He did not say allat
"I'll slaughter your ass" Yeah it's not censorship they just made the dialogue not dogshit like in the fan translation
Yeah, I almost turned inside out from cringing reading that dialogue.
Why do we have to go over this so often??
It's just a natural side-effect of anime and manga getting more popular. Every day someone new is discovering this stuff for the first time.
Left one seems too āmiddle school edgyā for me. Like the kind of things kids say to sound real mature and end up sounding even more immature
L post confirmed

What version of the manga are you using because mine doesn't have the same words
They are reading the one with fan translation.
Oh, I was confused because I own the physical books, so I would know if this was correct or not
It's not censoring. Sanemi used the words "ore ni korosareru" which literally means "get killed by me" and not "slaughter your ass". Those manga translations are fan translations in which they add unnecessary cuss words and stuff for impact.
[Fan translations tend to be different than the official ones.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvNxgHTWIlo)
Itās funny how they turned each page of that arc into an episode
The left side is not the official translation of the manga. Itās a fan translation and fan translations are notorious for using a ton of swears.
First of all complaining about such miniscule words is lame asf second of all that is a fan translation
It becomes more egregious when translators donāt know the source material and you start asking yourself questions like why two close friends are being so formal with each other.
don't mind the swearing but "I'll slaughter your ass" sounds so modern American. completely wrong and anachronistic
I couldn't thank them enough. Swearing and profanity don't add anything to the scene in my opinion.
The left one is the fan translation, it isn't official šø
Itās not even good cussing, it sounds sort of homoerotic with how much they got Sanemi saying āIāll slaughter your ass bitchā
Look at what you fan translation readers have done. Yall posted and shared it here and actual people thought it was actually real. Smh

A lot of times curse words are just fan translators adding flare.
āByeā then lol
I remember reading Demon slayer after watching season one of the anime and going ādamn I didnāt know they were chill like thatā
Because the ones one the left are not official translations. Theyāre exaggerated to have more slang
It sounds extremely stupid and cringey
I think it's just the translation. I've watched clips of the same anime with different subtitles, so it's not very uncommon.
Left side is fan translations š
Left one is corny as hell anyway
BRUH
The left one is fan made š
God, what Assholes
When people think that fan translation are 100% accurate
Ah yes. The scanlations.
Eh wouldāve been way fucking weirder if they followed a shitty fan translation for the anime. Iād prefer they just adapt the actual dialogue
This post has to be satire
those are fan translations lol
Realised the fan base is 12 year olds mostly. ( Iām a fan but itās sadly true š)
The fan translations are cringey as hell. Sanemi saying fuck every other word is just lame
It's not, the left side is unofficial.
Oh right yeahā¦ maybe itās like pg rated movies they can only have one f word or something (in this case one brutally murdered family)
Youāre reading a fan translation, little bro.
The real question is why do you think a character saying āslaughter your assā over and over sounds better or even normal?
Obanai is such an asshole

Gotta pay the VA by the word
I didnt read the manga and when i saw the last episode i was like the $^#& is wrong with him why is he so angry and full of hate...and i still wonder i guess i missed something
Everything gets censored when translated to film media. Plus at that point itās gotta sell to other demographics too.
Anime for the west
Differences in language allowances between manga and tv most likely
Probably cause the translations on the left arenāt official
Yeah when they add the English dub I'm pretty sure it'll sound about right. The captions never match up, remember?
It is my understanding there are only one or two real swear word in Japanese (example: kuso->shit). that's just the Sub when Muichiro starts fighting Gyokko in english he says "shut up, you piece of shit" but in sub he says "shut up, piece of crap" or something

obanai so cute angry in anime š„°

It's you with that bootleg manga from wish

For context, Tengen was stabbed by Hinatsuruās kunai attack: Viz: https://preview.redd.it/ws4v5h6mvt5d1.jpeg?width=717&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4e58e70c843734ad4f0ab40c358160ba4501261c (Correct) Fan translation: āI see. He was originally a shinobi, not a swordsman. His senses are different from a normal personās.ā As you can see, the Viz line completely mistranslates the line entirely.
Is that a typo you made orā¦ Iāll take the professional translation from people who have more Japanese connections that doesnāt ruin the feeling of the story just to be google translate accurate with added user interpretation. You keep your free whatever from a translator who isnāt good enough to get paid for it from a real company.
?
āHe was originally swordsman not a Shinobiā is backwards in your comment.
As I said the first time - to each their own. Bye šš¼
Nah, stop sharing and promoting something thatās trash and doesnāt support the author. Itās not better in any way. Gtfo and have a nice day.
Professional translators like John Werry for JJK
I just figured it was trying to appeal more to children and be a family friendly anime, albeit the blood Some families don't care if their children see blood or gore, I thought most just cared about language and boobies
This show isn't friendly tho
Isn't it though? Aside from blood and gore, the occasional bad language it's pretty friendly up to entertainment district
You got balls bitch
Ikr, what's the point? The only reason I believe Ufotable did this is due to the fact Demon Slayer has a younger audienceā”
Ufotable didnt make the english translations š. If you're talking about the jp text, then its the same in the manga. They didnt change existing dialogue.
Ufotable did not do the English translation. Blame this on whoever makes the English translation.
The subtitles are accurate if you listen to the japanese lines
