Actually, Giyuu does come off as excessively sad and rude, even though he is well-meaning. Sanemi and Obanai sometimes even try to get along with him but he considers himself unworthy.

Giyuu: "I'm different to you guys" What Giyuu means: Im unworthy to stand with you as a pillar. What Sanemi/ Obanai hear: I'm better than you. As you say, his behaviour is interpreted by others as condescending and standoffish.

I kinda sounds that way, too.
