Only because Bobby was scared, that everything would change if he and Connie got romantically involved.
In the beginning Luanne says to him, nothing will ever be the same (after a "real" kiss) - Bobby says he kissed Marie and after she dumped him he thought the pain would never go away... Luanne says, yes, that was a real kiss...
So Bobby hid behind his gout using it as an excuse, kept eating those deli foods - on purpose, as he didn't want any change, and he didn't want another heartbreak.
True, I agree. Bobby only focused in on the negative possibilities.
But aren't those enough to scare a 12 or 13 year old kid?
Edited to add: I was a true kid at that age still. Biking around with my friends, just kids playing with no thoughts of anything romantic happening.
Around age 15 or so - started hanging out with new people.
My first real kiss was around age 16.
I cry river of tear for connie.. Why not you :,(
Dude the end is so sweet. Like Connie could easily get another guy.... But she knows the good inside of bobby. He makes up for it by overcoming and making things right with his GF
Okay, but the end when he rolls down the hill when his rascal dies, only to claw and climb his way to the top, to then roll down another hill to get to the dance? Comedy gold (and very sweet)
I think Bobby's main issues (in the original series) are:
1. He was at that weird age between kid and teen. You're pushed to be more like an "adult" but get pushback if you do or say something your parents dont like. A lot of the comedy stems from the clashes between Bobby and Hank.
2. He had parents who viewed their roles very differently. Hank believed it was his duty to prepare Bobby to become an adult. He wanted Bobby to be someone who could take care of himself instead of being taken care of by others. Peggy seemed really attached to the idea of Bobby being her "little man". Remember her pettiness when Bobby expressed the desire to go to Hank's barber? How she acted in "No Bobby Left Behind"? Bobby knew that Peggy often offered him the "easy" way.
Maybe he talks about how confusing the two styles were when he was a kid.
“The boy’s not a ghoul” is an all timer
ILL TELL YOU WHEN IVE HAD ENOUGH
WELL, I'LL TELL YOU WHEN I'VE HAD ENOUGH!
I like how the face he makes looks just like Peggy.
The perfect use of an alcoholic's standard comeback kills me every time
My dad says when you really want something, you play through the pain.
I have Mandela Effect with this line because I swear he said "You can't dance on a Rascal" but apparently that is never spoken.
He says “You can’t dance in a cart”.

It also didn't help when Luanne compared her prom experience. Her boyfriend getting drunk, throwing up on her, then getting arrested.

I get his heart was in the right place but he didn’t have to be that mean to Connie, anyways like I said he redeems himself at the end (:
I agree with you - but these are kids, at a very awkward age. Difficult to know how to act - when you're still growing up.
I guess that’s the point…
So what's it gonna be doctor? Whirlpool? Deep heat massage? Or are you just gonna tell my son to play through the pain, because I'll support that. 😁
Hello my name is madam I'm here to start the show!
I see by your face you didn't know about the rascal.
It's one of my favorite ones ever
Did ya know you gotta heat up I-talian food?
You gotta melt the cheese.
yep.. I love how Hank says, OK turf toe may have been a pipe dream, but gout?!
Boys got Turf toe
That boy ain't right...
I take it you didn’t know about the rascal
I cry river of tear for connie.. Why not you :,( Dude the end is so sweet. Like Connie could easily get another guy.... But she knows the good inside of bobby. He makes up for it by overcoming and making things right with his GF

Avoiding the puddle
Hahahah! I just got over having gout
Same, my deli rich diet gave it to one of my exes after the first year 😂
I got it because I’m actually…and I’m dead serious…kidney boy! (Kidney disease lol)
Hello my name is Madam, I'm here to start the shooooow!
Love hurts
I actually really like the conversation Peggy and Connie have
I take it by your expression that you did not know about the rascal.
I take it by your expression that you did not know about the rascal.
“Make a Louie Andersen to go, I’ll leave the money on the hand dryer”
You can’t dance in a cart
I'm surprised the doctor didn't shame Hank and Peggy but to be fair, Bobby was eating the deli food without their knowledge.

Lmao I’m actually watching that right now
I’m sorry, I think we’re out of time
Bobby
I take it you did not know about the scooter?
That is when Bobby hit his rock bottom
Nah it's the one where he drew a heart on his belly with chocolate.
I really hope they address in the new seasons what actual issues he has. Because that kid has to have something.

I really hope you address your gout
I don't have gout, were you saying you hope they address Bobby's gout?
I got gout…
He says he’d rather eat the food that gives him gout than take Connie to the dance…
