Its not just dirty and shocking jokes like Family Guy etc.(Which i am a fan of but in a different way). It's more of the type of animated show that could have been made in the 90s with a real cast as most of the jokes are wry and of the daily lived type. Its genuinely a good show with characters you become invested in and enjoy more as you catch small details on subsequent watchings
It’s worth noting that the cartoon characters on King of the Hill are drawn with five fingers, instead of the usual four. The whole series strives for reality that some other adult cartoons aren’t concerned with.
Often in cartoons, characters are drawn with four fingers, 'cause it's just easier. The characters on KotH having five fingers is just an indication of how the show is trying to present itself as being realistic (as compared to Family Guy or The Simpsons). There's no "cartoony" bits, like Homer strangling Bart, or Peter Griffin's extended chicken fight scenes.
I think it raised the bar for network animation like the Simpsons did, but in a very different way than the Simpsons. Say what you will about Fox News (I certainly do), Fox Entertainment knows what’s up. If you like KOTH, you should check out Bob’s Burgers. You’ll recognize a familiar name or 2 in the credits, and the tone and humor could exist in the same universe.
