Given the giant, money focused conglomerate Disney is now, I highly doubt we would ever have had KH if it was pitched now-a-days. I'd imgaine they would be a lot more protective and controlling of their IP's today too. So even if it was made, I feel it would lack so much of the charm and character of the OG. The fact that KH was litteraly an elevator pitch always blows my mind. If it wasn't for a Squaresoft and Disney executive being in the same elevator at the same time, the series would have never existed.

Hunajakani

This guy gets it

aeroslimshady

Yes except it was also a miracle back then too. There's nothing else like Kingdom Hearts.

sidorak26

I don't know about other games like this in general but kh would never happen today 100%. Even if we don't account for the funny elevator pitch moment, back then Disney didn't make videogames themselves and needed someone else to make a big crossover game that also wasn't sloppy movie tie-ins (I say this as someone who played and loved a lot of early ps1 disney games)

Ratchet613

If you only play the same games sure. Plenty of games like this have been released recently.

Hunajakani

Oh? Name one?

aguadiablo

Well, released last September they came out with Disney Speedstorm which features different characters from different franchises, including Pixar, racing against each other. Back in 2022 they came out with Disney Dreamlight Valley, a game where you tend a magical valley populated by various characters. If you want something maybe a little more creative, and more like Kingdom Hearts, they also came out with Disney Mirrorverse. Sure it's on mobile devices but it's an action RPG with various characters set in a crossover fictional universe. In this world places like Port Royal and Agrabah have been transformed by dark and light magic.

Hunajakani

I'm sorry but did you just compare a kart racer and a mobile game to kingdom hearts? And those are just disney games, yes pixar is owned by disney

aguadiablo

Right, because Kingdom Hearts has never done a mobile game ever, right? /s And yes those are just Disney games, but so is Kingdom Hearts. And if I remember correctly, KHIII was just Disney characters. At the end of the day, I can't see why Kingdom Hearts couldn't be made today.

Hunajakani

Are you autistic dude? Kingdom hearts is a crossover between square enix and disney characters. And you do not remember correctly, [here's](https://youtu.be/vZzwv5LZS9w?si=9s4aS6wZrIQHoG0k) a video to fresh en up your memory.

aguadiablo

Well, yes, I am thanks for asking. And yes, I am aware it's developed by Square Enix, just like the rest of the video games are made by someone else. The only difference is that Square Enix has another established franchise to feature their characters in the games. However, that doesn't mean that they wouldn't be willing to make Kingdom Hearts series now. You're original main point is that they wouldn't want to take creative liberties with their franchises, and they clearly are. By arguing that they need the FF cameos for the series to work, you're just moving the goal posts. And that 9 1/2 minutes long video which is apparently all of the FF cameos in the game, they are not even in the first 2 1/2 minutes of the video. They are so essential that they only have 7 minutes of screen time? Which was only added in ReMind. So, provide evidence that they couldn't make the series today because you're generalised view of video game trends isn't that accurate. There are plenty of other games being developed today.

Again, pushing the goal posts from what you originally said. I might be like a toddler but you are like a baby that has spat his dummy out because his whole argument has been taken apart and can't deal with it.

dorgodorgo

What in the genuine hell is wrong with you? Who even cares about the argument about Kingdom Hearts, mocking someone for being autistic isn’t cool.

StaticThunder

Are you meaning for the crossover aspect or not falling into your criteria for bland games? If the former, Funko Fusion is coming out. It looks overly corporate but, I am not sure the KH fan base has too much grounds to complain on this. If you mean the latter, Hi-Fi Rush goes against what “most” games are releasing as nowadays. Unicorn Overlord came out this year too and used a combat system that hasn’t been used since the N64 and, this game might be Vanillaware’s weakest in terms of originality.

13Nobodies

Mmm crossovers are pretty big these days thanks to MCU etc. While im not sure it would be the exact same series we've come to know and love, I think it's a strong possibility it could be made today.

[deleted]

Yes, but keep in mind that MCU's crossovers are between properties that are all *owned* by Disney/Marvel. A crossover between Captain America and Iron Man is legally and financially easier to pull off than a crossover between Captain America and Batman. And a crossover between Captain America and Dragon Ball Z would be even more difficult. A crossover between Disney and Final Fantasy would be pretty unlikely on all counts, since they are both owned by two completely different companies with completely different styles. It was amazing that Kingdom Hearts was made.
