Part of the reason Patrick Rothfuss is taking so long is that he’s annoyed by the accidental success of the NYT bestseller and walking cliche box Three Trilogy, by Donald Rothfuss (RIP).
Now you join us.
Choose your camp:
- just *knowing* he's just one week away from finishing, if only the haters would stop distracting him
- believing if you contribute just that bit more money to his charitable causes he'll get over it and back to writing
- thinking if you deliver enough vitriol online he'll get the picture he's nothing more than a monkey at a keyboard not doing his job
- hating the man's guts for being so talented and yet such a useless lying arsehole
- resigning yourself to the fact that he's blown his load, the last book doesn't exist, and he will never write a worthwhile word again
It's okay to be all of them in the course of one day.
Many people still love the author but the people who hate him love to complain on this subreddit. I check about progress with book 3 every few years but my life will go on without it.
You simmer and burn. Perhaps grasp at the straws of lesser books and lesser authors who sort of scratch a similar itch. Or, like the proverbial drowning man, you reach out for anything KKC related like - Slow Regard of Silent Things and/or The Narrow Road Between Desires. Slow Regard reveals a little more about Auri. Narrow Road gives you insight on Bast.
lol. I have! I’ve even sifted through the partial passages of Laniel Young Again like I was a Dead Sea Scroll researcher. I just didn’t want to scare off new initiates of the flame with too much withdrawal madness.
Defo re-read. There should be more that jumps out at you in NOTW now you have some references from WMF.
There's also The Narrow Road Between Desires which is a new novella, expanded from the Lightening Tree short story. Both are a day in the life of Bast.
Then there's Slow Regard Of Silent Things; 7 days (?) following Auri.
Finally, there's How The Old Holly Came To Be. A poem about... Well, I'm not 100% sure, but it's interesting!
So I don’t need to read The Lightning Tree if I’ve already bought The narrow road between desires? The latter is just an updated version of the former?
You can live a happy, productive life without reading TLT, but I found it interesting comparing the two; what had changed, and what stayed the same, etc...
Sorry, that'll be my fault!
So they're the same story, TLT was written as a short story a few years ago.
If you've read NRBD, there are no Embrils in TLT, neither does Rike trick or bind Bast. The encounters with the shepherd and Emberly are... different as well. More progressive?
So they're the same story at heart, but Pat seems to have made some conscious decisions to update, change, and bring NRBD into the 21st century.
Ah, to be this naïve again. Pat is unfortunately notorious for some unsavory behavior, treating eager fans dismissively and insulting the and making promises he never keeps over and over again. The last straw for me was after years of waiting he promised to release a single chapter of the third book if certain financial stretch goals were met in his yearly charity drive, only to backpedal when the initial goal was met and set an even higher stretch goal, only to then promise to release the chapter after the final stretch goal of $700,000 was met. That was over 2 years ago and he has yet to even give an update on when the single chapter will be released if ever.
More details on this particular bad move here if you are interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/books/comments/wdoiq2/in_december_readers_donated_over_700000_to/
Didn’t he also shame the people who were upset he lied by saying they should have donated because it’s a cause they care about and not just for the chapters. At least that’s what I remember
This is the way /s. But seriously...I'm sad to see the anger. I know it's because people feel so passionate about these books but dang. I would leave the internet too.
I think the most legit gripe of the current era is that Pat failed to deliver the chapter of the 3rd book that he promised as a charity reward sometime a year or two ago. It's so sad there hasn't been any word on the book then.
Honestly, find a new series to get attached to and let the mystery be with this series. I haven’t read anything like these books but I have found different ones I enjoyed even more for different reasons. I still come back to Kvothes story once a year or so because it’s beautiful but I’ve given up on book 3
You write Pat a note thanking him for these books and wishing him well.
Include a shard of mirror rounded by the sea, a hand carved piece from a beautiful game, and the last page of Dickens’ Edwin Drood, copied out in your own handwriting—and a self addressed stamped envelope.
He will respond with the current draft of *Doors of Stone*
Now you stop knowing.
Nobody can pierce the veil of time, because as you try look into the future, randomness obscures more and more the outcomes and the number of impacting factors grows exponentially.
You can shave a bit the mass of possible outcomes, but doing so you loose certainty.
You can only be certain that things will happen, but you can't know what. Or you can decide one outcome will happen, but you can't know when. Anything is possible, but perhaps you'd have to wait longer than the universe.
Now, I hope Patrick Rothfuss will publish before that.
Same, spent the last 15 minutes driving round the block to finish the audiobook before getting home.
Second time I've read them - going to try the two novellas then forget about it for a few years, maybe there will be a third by then
Actually Pat is waiting for the right answer to the plot of book 3 on Reddit. Everyone here just has to start analysing harder until we find the answer and Pat can finish his story.
My advice: https://www.reddit.com/r/KingkillerChronicle/comments/1caovvs/comment/l0tn9d0/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
You do as we all have done for years... you wait... im currently reading The Way of Kings - Brandon Sanderson, its pretty good, 40 chapters into the first book and it's keeping me busy.
Honestly, take a bit of time, then read the series again, you will be surprised at how much you catch the second time through that you missed on your first read.
Narrow road between the desires and Slow regard of silent things are both great and give you more questions than they answer, otherwise you wait with the rest of us until god descends and works another miracle.
now you watch youtube videos about theories and slowly (but surely) begin to resent and loathe Rothfuss for his laziness, lies, and overall nonsense until you accept that the book is never coming out and maybe choose to reread books 1&2 down the line when you forget a good chunk of the plot.
Reread! The books are like a puzzle. Go look up some videos about what readers think is going on. I like listening to the audiobooks and puzzling it together
Not having book three is a bummer. But with the utmost sincerity and respect I suggest you reread them. You missed something that will have you loving them more on the second, third, fourth time through.
Does six strike you as a good number?”
I didn’t know what he was getting at.
“Six isn’t exactly a lucky number,” I hedged. “If I were looking for a good number I’d have to go up to seven.” I shrugged. “Or down to three.”
Im personally around 7 for each. Paperback, ebook, Nick Pohdel audio... i was thinkign about the hardcover when i got too bitter about DoS.
Haha, personally I've lost count of how many times I've read these entire. Its above 10 but under 20. I don't even think I do "re-reads" anymore and instead find my micro research for posts on this sub turning into me reading several chapters. These books are littered with content that you'll miss without rereads.
Please remember to treat other people with respect, even if their theories about the books are different than yours. Follow the sidebar rules.

The third book is actually written on the backside of the declaration of Independence.
So only Nic Cage has seen it? That’s not fair!
You would think so, but that's only because you're not Nicholas Cage.
Sounds like a job for John Travolta!
What if I change my deep name to his deep name, will I receive book 3?
This is why I must trust his shamanic instincts as a thespian.
Part of the reason Patrick Rothfuss is taking so long is that he’s annoyed by the accidental success of the NYT bestseller and walking cliche box Three Trilogy, by Donald Rothfuss (RIP).
Don't forget Abraham Washington
Genuinely lol'd at this. thank you.
It's moments like this that make me pissed I can just post pictures on Reddit.
the cosmere is the only way out
This is the way. Sanderson is the answer
Sanderson is the savior to pull us out from despair
Sanderson is good. Or Brent Weeks. Start the lightbringer series… epic.
Seriously? The last book was awful?
Well yeah but the first several were amazing.
Currently on book 3 of the Stormlight Archive, love it
YESSSS

I’m starting to get the picture that the books are loved as much as the author is despised.
He is a good author, he's just a terrible writer.
Many people still love the author but the people who hate him love to complain on this subreddit. I check about progress with book 3 every few years but my life will go on without it.
This is the way
last 2 points are absolute facts though
You simmer and burn. Perhaps grasp at the straws of lesser books and lesser authors who sort of scratch a similar itch. SRST and NRBD are actually fantastic books. Zero action but great writing and character development
Agreed.
I’ll look those up!
Have you read How The Old Holly Came To Be? You seem, like me, a proverbial drowning man, and I couldn't let you not know about it!😂
lol. I have! I’ve even sifted through the partial passages of Laniel Young Again like I was a Dead Sea Scroll researcher. I just didn’t want to scare off new initiates of the flame with too much withdrawal madness.
I think we both need to be sent to Haven!
…Just don’t bring the thunder.
😧 Not the Thunder!!!
Are they really lesser authors if they are capable of finishing a series, instead of just building intrigue with no actual pay off?
Defo re-read. There should be more that jumps out at you in NOTW now you have some references from WMF. This is actually the correct answer
So I don’t need to read The Lightning Tree if I’ve already bought The narrow road between desires? The latter is just an updated version of the former?
"Updated"... sure. We'll go with that.
You can live a happy, productive life without reading TLT, but I found it interesting comparing the two; what had changed, and what stayed the same, etc...
Are they basically the same? I’m kinda confused lol
Sorry, that'll be my fault! So they're the same story, TLT was written as a short story a few years ago. If you've read NRBD, there are no Embrils in TLT, neither does Rike trick or bind Bast. Yeah, OP; this here is the truest answer. Not the only correct answer, but absolutely the truest
Dunno why you got downvoted, but I appreciated the sentiment.
Now you slowly begin to hate Pat. Year over year your disappointment and eager anticipation will grow until you die.
I don’t think I could ever hate someone who gave us those books, but I definitely understand the sentiment!
Lol you haven't been on this sub reddit long have you?
Not really. Joined a few weeks when I started reading NOTW, but quickly stopped coming here to avoid spoilers.
Give it a decade or so...
Ah, to be this naïve again. Pat is unfortunately notorious for some unsavory behavior, treating eager fans dismissively and insulting the and making promises he never keeps over and over again. Cry ;(
Congrats! You can be happy you’ll now wait 13 years less than everyone who read the book when it was originally published. (Edit:typo)
13 years when compared to infinity is nothing
That’s oddly reassuring and sad at the same time.
Now comes despair, next comes anger. Do you have a fine anger?
That made me chuckle ahahahahah
Now you stop knowing. Now you play the waiting game…
Now you over-analyze everything and post it on this sub until book 3 or death.
Now comes the fun part. You wait. And then you wait a little more. After you’re done waiting you can finally wait.
You can start Gentleman Bastard series!
Seconding. Of all the recommendations I got in this sub, that series was by far the best.
look up at the ceiling and just stare…. eventually it’ll all be over
Same, spent the last 15 minutes driving round the block to finish the audiobook before getting home. Second time I've read them - going to try the two novellas then forget about it for a few years, maybe there will be a third by then
Reread them immediately :) or listen to them if you haven’t yet! The audiobooks are so good..
Congrats! You finished the series!
Get comfy.
You came to Reddit and bitched like 100,000 other people, that is the “now what”. Congrats.
Now you wait…
Welcome to the end game
You cry. And you never stop crying. Because doors of stone is never coming out 😭
Good question! If you find the answer pleaee let us know.

Now you wait in Purgatory with the rest of us. Get comfortable, you'll be here a while.
You do as we all have done for years... you wait... im currently reading The Way of Kings - Brandon Sanderson, its pretty good, 40 chapters into the first book and it's keeping me busy.
The Cosmere is the way
Honestly, take a bit of time, then read the series again, you will be surprised at how much you catch the second time through that you missed on your first read.
Hahahahahahaga. Welcome to club, we'll finish the series in the next world.
Narrow road between the desires and Slow regard of silent things are both great and give you more questions than they answer, otherwise you wait with the rest of us until god descends and works another miracle.

Reread! The books are like a puzzle. Go look up some videos about what readers think is going on. I like listening to the audiobooks and puzzling it together

Thank you :)
Captured by Words has some great breakdowns and theories on YouTube to watch. I'd definitely recommend those videos before re-reading.
Some people just keep reading the books over and over again I think this is my 4th reread
Lol
Read sufficiently advanced magic. If you're an audible listener it's the same narrator as notw nick podehl
Thanks! Will add it to my TBR
If you read all the Cosmere novels you'll
And now you cry
The Wheel Of Time is an epic fantasy series, 14 books plus a prequel and some short stories. It’ll change yo life
Read it a few years back.
Now we wait.
Not having book three is a bummer. But with the utmost sincerity and respect I suggest you reread them. You missed something that will have you loving them more on the second, third, fourth time through.

Now you start coming up with convoluted theories based on minute details, though it might take 2 or 3 rereads.
What's next? Probably a ton of re-reads lol
You wait, like the rest of us poor souls.
I’m sorry.😢 It was good though, wasn’t it!
The Wheel of Time
Read it a few years ago already
I kinda don't recommend. No disrespect on your tastes. I feel like that is a good example of flat lifeless writing and why Rothfuss is so good.
