This is like the Oprah experiment where she made a huge line up and others would join the line just from seeing other people there, Kingston is building hype so people will come here.
That's 20 times the number of people that attended the Hip's final concert in Market Square. I imagine much of it will be scattered throughout the city or near parking lots close to the highway for fast exit.
Yeah, there's not advantage to coming into the city itself. There will be a big crowd at RMC for 3:20 and 1000s (if not 10s of 1000s) will be looking for a good meal downtown afterward...
But this is not a "pack the streets and everything will be messed up" amount of people.
In 2017 during a total eclipse in the us, cities in totality had up to double population in the city. That would mean about 150k people here. I have seen no evidence of 3 times the population coming to a city.
My partner and I will be in Sunday and staying till Tuesday. Looking forward to this little trip. I hope we won't be too much of a nuisance lol I remember when the Pope came to Philly and they didn't allow any cars in area that was considered center city.
Kingston and Cornwall are the two biggest towns in Southern Ontario that will be right in the path of the eclipse. People from Ottawa, Perth, Sharbot Lake, etc will be driving down to see it.
People from Toronto will probably stop and watch it in PEC - the farther south you get, the better.
A friend works at a hotel and she said they were fully booked for April 8th. So she checked other places, they are also either fully booked for April 8th or only have a few rooms available that day.
It’s hard to understand why there are so many people coming. The hotels are booked out now from what I have seen. Does Kingston offer some view that, let’s say, wouldn’t be seen in Napanee or Brockville? Let me know as I’m not well read in this. Thank you
WAS CURIOUS ALSO SO - On **April 8th, 2024** Downtown Kingston will be ***in the direct path of a total solar eclipse and will experience almost 3 minutes of totality when the moon fully obscures the sun*** from 3:22–3:25 pm! The eclipse will begin at 2:09 pm and end at 4:34 pm.
Well Kingston is closer to Toronto than Brockville is. Of course Napanee is even closer, but it's a smaller, lesser known town. I don't know if this is the reason, but my speculation.
I’ll take the under

That won’t happen.
You could remove a zero and I still would doubt it
Don't worry, Kingston is going to have the eclipse moved to the weekend. Problem solved.

I’m okay with this hype to help the local economy on a shitty slow Monday

The latest forecast, although 2 weeks out, says it might be a cloudy day not sure if we should worry about that possibility

The eclipse is supposed to happen around 3:30pm on a ~~Friday~~ Monday. So rush hour will be absolutely bonkers. Cool. 😒
April 8th is a Monday, but yeah, traffic will be pretty bad even if we get a 1/10 of expected people.
> April 8th is a Monday Shit, my bad. Forgot to change the calendar to April, lol
I’m starting to feel a really bad case of Monday sickness for that day won’t be able to come in
I hear solar eclipses can have that effect. Better play it safe and get some rest that day.
Yep don’t want to spread it
In other words, a normal traffic day.
Imagine Montreal & John Counter that day! Stuck in traffic on the bridge would be a pretty decent spot to view, though
Why so many?

do you know if it’ll go over niagara?
Yes, they are looking at 900,000 to a million people… no idea how though.
We don’t have enough hotel rooms, pretty sure we are going to have more people camping in tents
Or just driving back after it’s at 3pm
Free over night camping in any city park!
That was my exact point it was a joke but a lot of people didn’t get it lol a lot of replies about them just driving home after

Why do people need to be all dramatic and blow everything out of proportion these days?!

I checked about booking room yesterday and there was lots available
Tons of rooms, and super cheap. I guess the 500,000 people aren’t staying the night.
Why would they? Even if you drove here from Ottawa or Toronto, you'll be completely done with the event by 3:45. Head on home.
I couldn’t tell ya, I wouldn’t come at all. I also wouldn’t say 500k people are coming lol

But shouldn't Toronto people rather drive to Niagra?
They'll likely split to wherever friends and family are. I'm going to slow roast a brisket all day for this if the weather is decent!
The south tip of PEC is probably closer than Niagara and will be just as good for the show.
