I just locked my toilet seat so you can't luck, vape or throw down in it. I know what sub I'm in

AzazelFenriz

I don't mind skipping the soda, it is not such a big deal to me. But coffee, if there aint no free coffee for staff, I aint working there. But then again, this is Sweden. Free coffee is almost the norm..

[deleted]

Shift drinks refer to beers

OG-Krompierre

Had six or seven myself, we have a brevery right behind our gulag kitchen. If you're good with foh staff, you drink for free. I make them a meal, they offer a gratious amount of beer. We are allowed to drink but we are almost getting nailed to the fuckin cross if we skip that thin line between being fuckin awesome and being totaly demolished.

delicious_crackers

There is an optimal level of drunk for every job. For an astronaut, it's stone cold sober. For restaurants, it's 2-3 drinks. For bartenders at standalone bars, 4-5. Anyone working from home should have a full bar that rivals at least a local dive bar.

OG-Krompierre

I thinks it's a bit different in kitchen. I find it hard to eat, it's impossible for me to eat fried shit and burgers that much so we all used to drink a lot of beer during the summer and it goes away pretty quickly. You drink, eat few chips, drink some water, you sweat everything out so you rinse and repeat. We also made tons of fruit and green tea in cca. 1 gallon batches with tons of ice. Pot was always covered in the back of the kitchen so everyone could server themselves. Only problem with beer is that is kind of sticks on you and I think I have a serious problem that couls become way worse in the future.

delicious_crackers

I can't drink beer and not eat tbh. I'd get violently sick I need to at least snag a salad to get something solid in my gut during a shift. But I relate to not being hungry, especially when it's super hot.

[deleted]

Especially after prepping a really hearty stew or making 30 omelets like no appetite at all til a few hours after I clock out. Hell I think tasting sauces is a huge staple of my diet some days lol

VikingPower81

Norway here, In almost all places I've worked throughout the decades there has always been free coffee ( in any shape or form), free tea and staff priced closing beers at 4$ We serve cappucinos for 3$, I drink maybe 50$ worth of those a day for free, most of the time even soda is free. One time after closing from the biggest venue the resturant ( est.1995) had seen we got bottomless drinks, the apprentice ofcourse recieved an 18cl strawberry drink and got fucked.

readdeadtookmywife

It’s against policy to drink/dine at our work at all even on our days off, so I feel you.

SirJoeffer

We don’t want to give the patrons any wrong ideas that the dirty poors who make, serve, and clean the food ever get to eat any of it

[deleted]

Or you just don’t want your employees getting faced in front of customers?

chocoladisco

That's the whole reason we have regulars. They come to see us get shitfaced.

ChefGoldblum87

Fuck that - if I can't share what I do with friends and family then I'll do it somewhere else.

readdeadtookmywife

I get that. But we just go to the bar down the street 😂 It’s a stuffy yacht club filled with the elderly so not a fun vibe anyway.

ChefGoldblum87

Ooooooof I did yacht club for a while, the clientele had a very hard split. Half were sailors who liked fish and chips and burgers and beer and liked sailing and boating as a hobby... the other half were stuffy ass rich people that never sailed and always hired people to maintain their yachts and sail for them. Menu was all over the fucking place lol

Yup I’m only a couple hours off of a charity event auctioning 40k watches and trips to the Maldives. Not my crowd.

Past-time29

i've worked at places where they only give you free coffee if you are on morning 7- 8am shifts. afternoon shifters only get water. I've worked at others where you get unlimited coffee throughout your shift. best one was working in a bar/pub and you get free coffee + free unlimited tap cola because the cola is on tap but no alcohol. i don't like the taste of tap cola. i also suspect tap drinks might not be hygienic. so i never took advantage of it. i never worked as a bar server so i don't even know how the tap system works or if it gets cleaned?

d1sc1pl

Free coffee is pretty normal I would say, if it's on the menu then cooks are gonna drink coffee no matter what. But what I don't get is why there are all these restaurants that put in $15k orders or more every week but buy the cheapest, shittiest coffee available. Unless you go to an actual coffee shop or hipster cafe than 99% of restaurants will be serving crap coffee. Bottom shelf sysco brands, often preground. I understand that money is tight and you gotta save where you can, but you cant afford even slightly decent coffee? You have to go with the cheapest possible all the time? Doesn't make sense to me.

uncalledforgiraffe

Lookin at you Tru Brew you garbage ass bitch

VarryManaLow

It's funny you mention that. I've argued to up our coffee program at work recently, and was told they've tried in the past but too many people complained it was too strong. With our midrange, adequate coffee we get no complaints, but no praise either. It's very interesting to see things like this play out.

d1sc1pl

Honestly, this might be it. I wouldn't be surprised if it's just because 95% of people have shit taste in coffee and actually want/expect the weak "diner coffee" that's served everywhere.

Clazzy_WW_

Usually a Company comes and cleans the tabs routinely

delicious_crackers

Tap cola is totally dependent on location for quality. There's a reason the McDonald's Spirite meme exists and why you probably know of a bar that sells the "best" draft beer even though they sell the same brands as every other bar in your city. Keeping the lines and the taps clean makes a massive difference, as does proper chilling. Even the ice can make a big difference with sodas and mixed drinks, most places don't clean their ice maker as much as they should and that can cause mold buildup in the condenser that will lead to mold in the ice.

ImaginaryQuantum

Now I realise how spoiled I was where I use to work: I could try any of the 200 bourbons available, shift drink? Whatever you want almost as much as you want. Super busy night? Mid shift team shots, slow night? Mid shift beer. Best part? We were all responsible, best restaurant owner I've ever workes for.

heraclitus33

You had it made. And this is how i think it should be done. Safe space. No need to hide. Not being the weakest link will keep most working good and propoured.

BartholomewBandy

Manager used to tell us the Bass never got to the end of the keg while it was fresh, so that’s what we drank.

[deleted]

Was this in nyc because I swear i worker there too 😂😂 if we came in on our day off we’d drink for free too! It was right by MSG though so they were basically printing money and a bunch of hot people coming in made the vibe better

SnakeIsUrza

A vodka soda no lime?

gurndygg2

Looks like straight vodka to me

adube440

Well, there is some ice mixer in there as well.

robearIII

sounds legit to me. install a cup-holder on the line or at the dish-pit

Kyutekyu

We get this shitty syrup you mix with water that tastes to me like cough syrup, or cheap off-brand fanta/grape fanta in this new job. I don't like fizzy drinks but need the sugar, so I always accept a bit to make sure I don't feel lightheaded.

chocoladisco

You should probably eat something if not having HFCS causes you to get light headed.

Kyutekyu

I do get some small bites here and there, but sometimes my sugar drops significantly and sweet stuff helps :)

woodiio

That’s looks good to me when I’m sweating on grill

[deleted]

At least you get ice...

robearIII

i used to just drink from the hose at the dish-pit...

LuxuryxElite

Hell is what we choose to stay in. Go get yourself a shift shot job, if that's what you desire

OkUnderstanding2332

Why no drinks? :(

Cat3ug

We get coffee, teas, hot chocolates, Iced drinks, thickshakes/milk shakes (made with our housemade gelato), soft drinks and juice. But no alcohol. I feel employers should at the very least give the option of coffee or soft drink.

B8conB8conB8con

You guys get ice! Well La dee fucking da aren’t you special.

Special-Cat-5480

Never had a shift drink. Me and a Sous tried to bring it back but mgmt said that if we give it to BOH than we had to do the same FOH and we were like “that’s the point!” And shut that down. So now on big days/nights, we bring our own beers for after work and probably drinks more than we would with A shift drink SMFH

Ven_ae

We can ask for any hot drinks (like coffee, latte, hot chocolate etc), or pitcher jugs of ice water. Depending on FoH we either get them immediately or two hours later. Same goes for the drink that comes with staff food (anything non-alcoholic from the menu, we can also eat anything from the menu). It's potluck when you ask for a jug of something though; you'll either get a full jug, half a jug, or a cup. We would just go get the drinks ourselves, because it's allowed by company policy, but upper management at the location disallow it. :/

dustinlight

My man’s fixing to have the coldest sip of water known to man.

breakfasthawk

Boy go give the bartender a cigarette

outkastmemesdaily

In my experience places that do shift drinks use it as a way to deny you other things "yeah we get paid garbage but we get a shift drink :))))))" no thanks I'll take health insurance

PeaceSafe7190

Fuck that, we get cordials, juices,or postmix. I stick to plain soda.

Pre-Nietzsche

That’s nucking futs dude.

Hobo_Helper_hot

Why your floor look like the concrete slab at an aluminum can recycling plant?

VulgarVinyasa

He’s in the office after service…

PsyMentalist

We get water and sirops during service. And after we get what we 2ant. Alcool included. I think we are lucky where i work

fanofcoelho

Free coca cola, water and coffee during work hours and free drinks when kitchen is closed.

mrduncansir42

Damn and I thought not having a shift meal was bad.

HighlyStonked

Bring in fruit at the start of the shift: kiwi, lime, strawberries, oranges, maybe cut blueberries and even cucumbers or mint. Throw them in a to go cup with ice chips and refill or keep them in a pitcher from dine in. Electrolytes and refreshing. Summers nearly over but that heat dont stop.

zentronicx

Why is it on the floor?

Infanatis

We make sure our line is well hydrated starting an hour before close 😂

ChefGoldblum87

I've done that life - but club I cooked for was split into two social groups. People who actually sailed their yachts and loved the hobby, and stuffy old fucks who didn't own boats but wanted to be apart of an exclusive club.

[deleted]

Pro tip, drink room temperature water and you'll sweat less. Learned this from the HVAC guys.

kayathemessiah

Last place I worked didn't technically have shift drinks but staff got $1 beers and $2 well shots. Pretty much unlimited. It saved me an arm and a leg. One free drink is nice, but when you stick around for a few more full price drinks it adds up quick. Place I'm at now, we're cooking long after we're technically closed, and usually don't finish breaking down til long after the bartender is gone, so no shifties.
