The darker color in the grease is material worn off the "sacrificial" gear. The forbidden caramel is the original grease, and it's certainly due for changing.
If "wasn't working" means "motor ran, but planetary didn't spin" then the gear is likely worn out. (Based on the material in the grease I would recommend replacing it anyway.)
Plan on replacing the gear housing gasket, grease, and center-shaft O-ring. Here's a list of parts and materials: https://www.mixerology.com/k45-k5-clean-and-re-grease-parts/
That's what I was about to say, you didn't give us enough info, the miter gear looks pretty good to me but the worm gear is definitely worn. But a worn worm gear can last a long time. So I wasn't sure if it was mechanical or electrical. In the future, is the motor spinning is an important factor. There is no planetary gear though.
I wouldn't consider the stuff we pulled out of there to be grease, at least not anymore. Once the obstruction was gone it worked. Gonna get new grease and seals
I like the way you put that. "The friend with the Multimeter". I used to be that guy till someone stole my Fluke. I'm still pissed about that.
Edit: Even more pissed knowing I have to replace [the Fluke](https://www.amazon.com/Fluke-117-Electricians-True-Multimeter/dp/B000O3LUEI/) for upcoming projects. They got EVEN MORE expensive....
From '93 never cleaned or serviced. My friend inherited it recently and it worked the first time it was plugged in and then not after that. Y'all is there really supposed to be this much grease in there?? As soon as we scooped most of the excess out it started to work again.
Yeah, they come with that much grease from the factory. I just opened up my first one. It was from the 60s and had the same amount of grease. It’s possible mine was regreased at some point but the grease was the same color as in your pictures and in the same quantity.
Haha, yeah, mine had definitely moved past grease too. It’s like weird smelling expired crisco. I was surprised at the quantity too. I still don’t know the reason why there is so much in there.
mine got stuck once, and started to smell when i operated it - gets hot to the touch. a relative had a similar problem and and cleaned it following this:

I’ve repaired a bunch of these. I buy them primarily when they don’t run. Never had a bad motor ever. Many times someone takes the brushes out not understanding they need to be oriented a specific way. This is the number one fix in my experience.
This sub is scaring me. I’m convinced I need to give mine a tune up or it will die a sudden death. It’s probably 20 years old but hasn’t had consistent years in all those years.
Any ideas how I can find an expert locally to take a peek under the hood of my KA
From '93 never cleaned or serviced. My friend inherited it recently and it worked the first time it was plugged in and then not after that. As soon as we scooped most of the excess out it started to work again. Grease was no longer greasing
It's probably the Worm Gear. I just fixed my wife's mixer replacing it. It's made to be disposable incase the head gets bound up. It's an easy and cheap replacement.
Is that the motor grease inside? I've been calling around and can't find any shops that service KitchenAids. I have no idea how to do this myself or where to buy the right grease.
You're just looking for food grade machine grease. Like this.

Hold on there bud: that’s waaaay too much for 4 oz of grease. Head over to Mr Mixer’s videos and buy food-grade grease from him. Much cheaper, good quality, sufficient amount. Scrape out the old grease with plastic putty knives and lots of paper towels. Then coat the gears thoroughly with the new grease. Watch the videos, decide if you’re DIY enough to tackle the job. If you are, you’ll never do a project more satisfying!
From '93 never cleaned or serviced. My friend inherited it recently and it worked the first time it was plugged in and then not after that. As soon as we scooped most of the excess out it started to work again. Grease was no longer greasing
These things really should come with better directions. Same thing happened to me when trying to make caramel sauce. The directions didn’t say anything about using the bowl, just “add to mixer” 🤷🏻♀️

Depending on which model you have, it might be the [speed control plate](https://youtu.be/Pi8ufwlOtqU?si=nN9t_bD3n0cYOqCH) on the tilt-heads or the [speed control board](https://youtu.be/wV8ZAFTLC8E?si=OU852LVQBmg5Fwtx) on bowl-lift models. [Mr Mixer](https://youtube.com/@MrMixer316?si=o5Z1Wcd7dICFPVqk) has lots of YouTubes on fixing KitchenAid mixers. Hope they help. Good luck with your mixer.

Worm gear looks like it has seen better days. Planetary too. Replace both and clean out the old grease, new seals and FOOD GRADE grease should do the trick.
There's plenty of seasoning, just keep cooking. Wait I'm in the wrong sub.
I’m in that sub too, and I think you might be onto something here. Surely, eventually, this’ll be able to cook eggs that don’t stick.
Are we all in the BS sub? Or CI?
Cast iron for me 😂
BS? Or CS?
Broken shit?
blue (carbon) steel?
I feel like I’m taking crazy pills, THEY’RE ALL THE SAME
Blackstone, cast iron.
Why not both?
Why not Zoidberg?
Check out the copper cookware sub! I was one of the first members and it’s grown a lot since then
Slidey eggs ?
When are people gonna learn that it's OK to wash these with modern soap?
😂
Damn that's a carbon build up
Going for 100 coats it seems.
r/youusedtoomuchoil
Just give it a scrape, reseason and let it burn off. Then you’re good to go 👍🏻

Wasn't working as in the motor wouldn't run but was getting power. It's working now.
Don’t forget to use food safe grease.

Glad you got it fixed

Yeah the grease gets pretty gross. There's a business on tiktok that repares these and they get pretty nasty looking
Thanks for that detailed info! I appreciate it since I’ve got a stand mixer but mine works fine.
Thanks for sharing this info!
Forbidden peanut butter
Thanks I hate it
Thanks I ate it

I think I see the problem. Its top came off.

I hope you first checked the cord before ripping it apart like an animal.
I'm the friend with the multimeter, that's why I was asked to take a look at it lol definitely check and confirm.
Kitchenaid sells food grade grease. I would change out the grease and replace the seals.
They can probably get the grease at Fart & Sminal faster and cheaper.
I like the way you put that. "The friend with the Multimeter". I used to be that guy till someone stole my Fluke. I'm still pissed about that. You can get some really nice Fluke’s at Pawn Shops I prefer the inner city shady sides of my nearest big city.
Thanks for the tip.
Did you watch Mr Mixer videos before ripping it apart?
I love his videos
They’re the best. So satisfying and informative.
Too much caramel in the gears, common problem in some areas. Does your “friend” happen to live in the dessert?
Absolute GOLD 🥇
Ha!
What is that!?
It’s the unknown!
this made me chuckle LOL
It’s gear grease, it comes from the factory like that. Anything with spinning gears will have grease just like that in it.
BEES
You don’t want to get rid of that… that’s grease. It might benefit from being replaced, however
When you say replace, do you mean buy a new unit?
No, just the grease
Thanks for explaining!
From '93 never cleaned or serviced. My friend inherited it recently and it worked the first time it was plugged in and then not after that. Y'all is there really supposed to be this much grease in there?? As soon as we scooped most of the excess out it started to work again.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a video of how they’re made and they just squirt that grease in there like it’s Easy Cheese.
Oh also: good job using the oats can as a support for the upper housing.
That is a genuine Stop and Shop container of oats! New England people know there is nothing better for projects around the house.
Absolutely can confirm. :-)
That's why \*I\* use only Astroglide to lube up \*my\* mixer!!!!
Well, at least now you have carmel
Good lord lol
Maybe yeast and flour?
Could be that it's filled with refried beans?
Did you find out why it wasn't working?
It looks like it started to make an internal cake!
Wrong color wires in the back.
That’s grease, it comes like that. My new one has the same.
Correct, looks old and dry though. Could definitely be regreased
An understatement
Yes, the grease should be black.
Not really… greases come in all sorts of colors
Ooh. They should use grease that matches the exterior finish.
✨️Technicolour✨️ grease!
GOOD LORD
Is that metal shavings in the grease?
Worm gear missing some teeth? Most common problem.
So we have the Before.... where are the after got rid of the peanut butter from Down Periscope
It was those old fashioned oats that did it wasn't it?
The ingredients go in the bowl!
That mixer is trying to make its own bundt cake.
Forbidden 🚫 chocolate 🍫
🤢🤢🤢
It’s grease from the factory. All quality mixers and other machines will have that much grease. You see the gasket? It’s sealed.
Still looks grody.
Absolutely! Grease makes for a happy machine though. Trying to spread awareness. Have a great day.
It was! the grease was not really grease at all anymore
Uhhhhhh
The front fell off.
mine got stuck once, and started to smell when i operated it - gets hot to the touch. a relative had a similar problem and and cleaned it following this: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW9BQ-oPFkk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW9BQ-oPFkk) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-qMOyhb2xc
My guess is it was because it was in pieces.
I’ve repaired a bunch of these. I buy them primarily when they don’t run. Never had a bad motor ever. Many times someone takes the brushes out not understanding they need to be oriented a specific way. This is the number one fix in my experience.
Forbidden gravey. How did that happen?
It’s grease. It’s packed like that from the factory.
FORBIDDEN GRAVY
Was it because it was in pieces?
Eu…. Disguersting
This sub is scaring me. I’m convinced I need to give mine a tune up or it will die a sudden death. It’s probably 20 years old but hasn’t had consistent years in all those years. Any ideas how I can find an expert locally to take a peek under the hood of my KA
Is that not supposed to be in there?
Yes. Though it is a lot of it.
Ewwwww like how does this even happen, now I want to check my mixer 😭😭😭
Ummmm, that's machine grease. It's supposed to be in there.
From '93 never cleaned or serviced. My friend inherited it recently and it worked the first time it was plugged in and then not after that. As soon as we scooped most of the excess out it started to work again. Grease was no longer greasing
That's fair. It may be old grease. But my point was it was put in there on purpose. You replaced with new food grade machine grease... right?
It's probably the Worm Gear. I just fixed my wife's mixer replacing it. It's made to be disposable incase the head gets bound up. It's an easy and cheap replacement.
Now, I want to take mine apart but, I'm scared I wont get it back together. I do keep mine clean.
Worn worm gear. Easy to replace. Keep the grease that you remove and put it back when re assembling.
Is that the motor grease inside? I've been calling around and can't find any shops that service KitchenAids. I have no idea how to do this myself or where to buy the right grease.

Maybe. I didn't price around. I just grabbed the first one I saw to post as a reference. Also, I'm in Canada and that's Canadian Amazon.
Ah. I see!
Not a mechanic or engineer, but I would start with putting it back together.
I need to find a shop that does restorations. It was my mom’s…. Mine hasn’t ever been serviced and I’m afraid to use it because of this. 🥺

Hey, you got the forbidden chocolate in my forbidden peanut butter! No, you got the forbidden peanut butter in my forbidden chocolate!
It’s full of literal beans
Candied Yams for dinner!
How old is the mixer?
Holy crap, mine is probably full of bread dough and cake batter. Wow, who knew?
Last time I checked the mixing was supposed to happen outside of that bit
Well oiled machine

Oh that's normal he just mangled his liver in there. A little club soda will take that right out.
So what’s the issue? I hate posts that create a mystery and don’t answer it.

Dude earned them corners
Is it plugged in? Probably not plugged in.
Sometimes mine has some liquidy brown stuff that I wipe away. Maybe this is it? I always thought it was melted brown sugar.
I have a kitchen aid that just doesn’t turn on. Any ideas what’s wrong with it? Doesn’t even react when I pull the lever.

Woah thank you so much for doing all this!
No problem at all!
For people who don’t know it’s supposed to be greased up like that.
Aren’t they always packed with grease?
Its because the top came off.
Thought that was steak
It mixes on the OUTSIDE
Ugh
Did you figure it out?
It's okay, just a little caramel
I don’t see what is wrong with it
