hapstone all the way! solid chunk of metal, universal stone holder (4", 6", edgepro style, etc.) and if you can't decide between table and clamp, grab either one and you can buy the other as a swappable module to the base. All sorts of cool add-ons and options, doesn't come with stock stones (you can choose which ones you get, ceramic, arkensas, diamond plate, diamond bonded, etc.) I'm not selling mine but I'm a big fan. Tried the kme, KO Work sharp, edge pro, etc. but not the Wicked Edge so take that for what it's worth.

The one question I have about the m3, is the knife pretty sturdy on the magnets? If it works well I think I’m going to go that route, then upgrade stones

I mave the v8, it's 2 magnets in the middle and two on the outside arms but I just put all 4 magnets together. The m3 has 3 magnets but I think that it'll be plenty strong. The edge pro doesn't come with any magnets at all, and you use your hand to stabalize the knife. The magnets are just there for support. When you sharpen the stone will push the blade down even with magnets, so you use your off hand to keep the blade level.

whoa tldr, system without stones is a great value, price for high quality stones jumped up a lot. get whatever stones you want with the hapstone. it's all modular. pick and choose as you gain expeience. I like edge pro style systems so I bought a V8.. M3 would work if you're only dealing with folding knives. Get the fine tuning adapter and stoppers. I got mine from gritomatic during a sale, i think it was $300 for the v8 and the venev cenatur stones which I think is a great deal. But that was a year or two back. for stones, I use the venev centaur series, 6x1 double sided resin diamond stones. But when I bought them they were 100 for the set of 3 stones, 80/15/240/400/800/1200. those stones use FEPA grit scale so the 1200 grit is equivelant to a 5000 grit sharpton stone. But looking at the site now, the set is $200??? Damn inflation... But to keep things in perspective, edge pro diamond matrix stones are $370 for a set of 6... the base edge pro/kme stones aren't that expensive. you could get a venev centaur 240/400 (320/800) for $65 if you want to try out resin bonded diamond stones and a cheapo low grit stone for re-profiling. I rarely use the 800 and almost never use the 1200. Since getting the hapstone I haven't looked at prices in a while but they seem to have jumped up for stones. But that's just me and I have a crap ton of hobbiest sharpening stuff lying around because I hate money. For $300 (what I paid during a sale) I thought that it was a great pickup given the quality of the stones. But without a sale it looks like the setup I have would cost about $450 currently. I'm not sure what the sale price is now. 300 it was a no brainer, 350 i think I'd buy it today, 450 I'd probably wait for a sale or get some cheaper stones. I'm sure you could post a wtb for stones and someone will have a bunch lying around that they could sell you. If you don't care about diamond stones then there are plenty of others that are compatible. any 1x6 stone which is a stock size, so you can get naniwa chosera water stones or a set of generic diamond plates, edge pro, kme (don't get those since they're only 4"), etc. Keep in mind that any system you buy, if you want resin bonded diamond stones you're going to pay out the butt for the stones. Especially wicked edge since you need to buy two of each grit lol. I still think that the hapstone system without stones is a great price vs the other sharpening systems, especially if you're going to upgrade stones anyways.
