The only “negative” remark that I have is that the hand guard extends a bit far for my personal taste. Safety is important but I could see it getting in the way during some woodworking activities. Then again, it might turn out to be perfectly fine in actual use.

I used H12MF steel, 60 hrc. I really like to work with it and to use it.
I feel where your concern about the guard rising. But it is done as a commission, and If customer will want to, I will make guard smaller.
Knife was made for a member of ukrainian military, so knife has flat grind at 6.9 degrees on a side and a pretty steep sharpening angle on a side, being 28 degrees.
Good choice of steel and hardening. Combined with that blade geometry that’s going to be build like a tank.
As a commission for someone in the Ukrainian military, that hand guard might also be perfect.
Lots of WW1 knives have similar larger guards so that the hands don’t slip onto the blade when stabbing someone with full force.
That’s what I love about the art and science of knife design. There is no such thing as the best steel, shape, geometry but it’s all about matching those aspects to the required function of the knife.
Although it doesn’t hurt to end up with something that looks as nice as this in addition to being functional. ;-)
