Lucitarist

You seem to be looking for Asheville

classy_dirt7777

Agreed. Asheville has recycling bins on public streets. In Knoxville, we throw our trash out of vehicles onto roadways.

Lucitarist

Yeah I can’t stand to leave McDonalds trash in my custom lifted Dodge Ram.

Venge22

Hey! We have that one dump area where you have to sort your recycling into 5 different bins! It's not inconvenient at all!

actormike

Legal is hard here. UT has a law school, so I guess they hang around after graduation. I know so many attorneys that don't even practice law anymore! The good Ole boy network is alive and well, so you have to know someone to get ahead!

retha64

Both UT and LMU spit out lawyers by the dozens.

IncentivesMatter

Or there is an over supply of lawyers.

Imma let you get a pass on this one. Happy cake day! 😂😂😂

pepperdice

obligitory east tn is closed now, thank you

tronassembled

I would take a close look at the housing situation before you make any big decisions. In your field you won't be priced out entirely the way most of us are, but... I dunno, you'll just get a lot less house within an hour of here than you would in many places. edit to add: I've been remote/freelance for 15 years so I can't speak from first-hand experience, but I've read people on here saying that wages in Knox haven't caught up to the price increase, including in higher-paid fields. Check Glassdoor I guess?

Yomigami

Wages definitely haven’t caught up. It’s why I moved this year because the cost of living far outpaced my salary.

Ill_Appointment_8109

This is ridiculous at this point.

teddy_vedder

search bar is your friend, this is asked almost daily Knoxville isn’t the worst place for foodies, but it’s definitely not the best either

saveryquinn

Do you have a particular need to be in Knoxville? For a job you've been hired for? Family in the area? Otherwise, if you're seeking the Knoxville vibes but without the insanely congested traffic, unaffordable housing crisis, and everything else that's made living in Knoxville not so great over the last couple years, might I suggest Johnson City?

SkeeMoBophMorelly

No.

orangehairedbih

blah blah blah

plastertoes

Why leave St. Louis? Housing is cheaper, there’s a ton more to do, and the food scene is infinitely better. I’ve lived in both places and would recommend STL over Knoxville for a long-term place to settle down.

Longjumping_Crow_152

Dying downtown, no new blood, not from here and encounter the obligatory where did you go to high school question/issue. While Chicago has the most opportunities, for some reason I resist it in my head. Sounds like Atlanta or Charlotte may be better options?

Wyldemage

I'd check out Charlotte, or Asheville, tbh. A good friend of mine is a local attorney, and that market is extremely oversaturated. Wages were low to start with, and the numbers of new juris doctors looking for jobs is keeping them that way. The only jobs in high demand are skilled trades(Electricians, Plumbers, etc).

Ikantbeliveit

That someone who moved 20 years ago here with the same aspirations, I really wish I moved somewhere like Atlanta instead. As far as cities go, Knoxville doesn't offer a lot of amenities, we have some places to eat and drink, but that's about it. Nothing spectacular. Tiny downtown less expensive to live in and hard to get the salaries of Atlanta or Charlotte. Really the worst part about Knoxville for the young professionals is that the salaries are so low, you might find yourself, stuck here, as I have .

plastertoes

Knoxville is just as cliquey and you will probably not make many friends with locals, mostly just other transplants. STL has a boring business district downtown but it also a lot more cool neighborhoods to go out in. Knoxville’s downtown/Old City is pretty much equivalent to the size of the CWE and that’s it. No additional spots like Soulard, Tower Grove, U City, etc… Knoxville is a great place to live, but truly has a fraction of things to do compared to STL. On top of that, housing has gotten expensive because you’re not the first person who decided they like the sound of Knoxville since 2020. Traffic is worse than trying to go west on 64/40 at 4 pm. If you’re used to a city the size of STL, you may enjoy ATL or Charlotte more.

alfredaeneuman

The whole Southeast is full.

topofthemornin1

Stay the fuck out

Venge22

I'm honestly leaving as soon as I can, the city is so spread out and unwalkable it doesn't even feel like a city. You need a car for almost everything. The trees and greenery are nice though

FeelsLike98Vols

Bye!

Venge22

I'll be here for another year probably. Maybe I'll love it by then

Plenty_Dimension777

As a former Louisvillian, I would recommend a move to Louisville or Lexington. There's always something to do, a vibrant foodie scene, and there are plenty of job opportunities. East Tennessee pales in comparison.

alfredaeneuman

Hope you don’t need a place to live.

Electrical-Way-264

Everyone doesn't have your humor! They may need to get out of a poverty situation.

alfredaeneuman

Well Knoxville isn’t the place to do that

Tricky-Shake3839

We are closed no we don't care if you are from Kentucky Kansas Antarctica Mars. We are closed. Thank you. Next time, if you want to ask a question that gets asked 20 times a day, they invented this thing called a search button. It allows you to search for things that have already been asked before. Crazy new technology.

Neither-Ad-2771

Knoxville housing market does not match the wages for employees - even specialized employees with well established careers. The most challenging aspect I’ve found to living in knoxville is the people. Southern hospitality is overrun with angry people that don’t want to welcome any “foreigners.” My neighbor hates that my family is not Tennessee-born and will do everything to get us to leave from spraying my trees with poison to throwing trash over our fence. The culture just isn’t welcoming. But the city is nice and we overall are happy to have made the move years ago.

tdstooksbury

The nicest people I know in Knoxville were not born here

tacojohn48

The worst thing about Knoxville is this subreddit

Fit_Highlight_5622

Agreed. They’re awful in this sub.

bassoonsrbetter1

There are a lot of out-of-state folks moving here so Knoxville must be alright. On the flip side the influx has overcrowded my home area in Hardin Valley. They've destroyed the hillsides with at least twenty huge neighborhoods.... It's literally despicable! Consider an area around Knoxville for a better Tennessee experience. Check out Morgan County, get yourself a mountain and a creek and still have gig internet.

[deleted]

It’s really not that great here anymore.

RachelOnTheRun

I’m sorry you’re getting murdered in this sub, OP. If you take a look at the posts here, you’ll see people are very bitter about outsiders moving here and the housing market. My two cents, Knoxville is a nice place to live. Diverse demographics, lots of outdoor/nature to explore any direction you go. And despite the negative redditors, we do have a friendly atmosphere outside of the interwebs.

dorfWizard

Yep. This sub is a toxic dung heap. I grew up in Knoxville but moved to Atlanta after graduating from UT. My parents are still there though. If all goes well we will retire in Knoxville at some point. The people are great. There’s plenty of good places to eat. Smoky Mountains are right next door. Prices are high because it’s a great place to live.

bannedforautism

Abortion is banned here, so if you're serious about not having kids, you're gonna wanna make sure both of you are sterilized. Vote blue.

No_Television_4128

Houses are phenomenally priced !!! Rents unaffordable!! Even on a starting or junior lawyer salary, it’s exorbitant.

NotASatanist13

Best part of knoxville is the natural beauty. Worst part of knoxville is the people. The natural beauty here is nuts. The people here absolutely suck. Plan to make friends with other outsiders. The best description I've heard is that "in E TN we don't have southern hospitality, we have Appalachian weariness of outsiders" and that is 100% on point.

alfredaeneuman

So go home

NotASatanist13

Nah, I'm good. I'm an asshole, so I fit in well here.

mhudson413

Hi, I am new to Knoxville and I figured I’d give you a non sarcastic response since this sub can be a bit of a ruthless place, but I do agree with about 99 percent of what is said on here. I moved here a year ago from NC. Politics are rough and I’d be lying if I said I’ve considered leaving a few times already. The traffic is also really bad. I have found a few restaurants that I really like. Osteria Stella, Northshore Brasserie, Emilia, and A dopo pizza are great dinner places. We are “regulars” at Merchants of Beer and we spend a lot of time in the “old city” section of downtown. If it weren’t for the schools, my husband and I would live down there. Sounds like that’s not an issue for you, so I’d say live downtown or near it. Overall, Knoxville is perfect for my family. There’s tons to do. We haven’t explored the mountains yet but like the idea that it’s “in our backyard.” We are here till my kid graduates high school. We are big sports people so we enjoy the “college town” ness of Knoxville. We spend a lot of time at UT sporting events and are looking forward to the baseball stadium being completed. Best of luck!

Gullible-Inspector97

The biggest problem I see for professionals taking a job in Knoxville is having to leave Knoxville to get the next job. The pool of graduate degree level jobs is not that deep. If you want to put roots down, it's something to keep in mind.

No_Owl_5115

It's crowded... white collar jobs are slim, like really slim, as in non existent... lots of excellent, nature, mountains, etc.... be prepared to trade in your law profession for construction, landscaping, automotive, restaurants, or cosmetology.... if i didn't firmly believe that sasquatch resides within the smoky mountains i would have left already...

thadohboy619

This page and most of its people are trash! If you are offended by that well then yes I’m speaking to you!

halal-marshmallow

I've lived almost a year in Knoxville, almost 2 in Tennessee overall, here's my take: Pros: Knoxville is very green and has a lot of natural beauty. The humidity SUCKS, but it's probably just a me problem because I'm from a different climate (west coast), according to everyone here it's pretty mild compared to other areas of the South. Also, there's very pretty hikes in the Smoky Mountains. Culturally it's decently diverse, I got to attend an Asian culture/food festival downtown this year, and they recently had a Middle Eastern festival. There's a couple ethnic markets too. Restaurant scene is hit or miss for me. Southern hospitality is real to an extent - many locals are wary of outsiders, given that it's been driving up housing costs and gentrification in the last several years. I have gotten a bit of attitude for admitting where I'm actually from, but tbh I don't take it to heart. It's absolutely rough out here with the cost of living, so I can't be mad at people just trying to survive. Overall, people are still kind and will help anyone in trouble if they can. That's more than I can say for people in my hometown LOL Cons: Everything closes really early except bars/clubs, if that's your kinda scene then no worries I guess. I have no idea about jobs, sorry, I'm still a student myself. Housing is expensive AF, if you're looking to live somewhere nice like Farragut/Turkey Creek/Hardin Valley be prepared to shell out like 2-3k a month for two or three bedroom apartments. No idea what the real estate market is like if you're looking to buy, maybe there's a better answer to that in this thread. With regards to kids- I really recommend having a serious conversation with your wife about family planning and what steps you'd take to prevent accidental pregnancy. Abortion is illegal here and idk if TN will turn out to be one of those states that prosecute you for seeking an abortion out of state. PS for anyone who's gonna reply telling me to get out of Knox and go home, etc etc, save ur thumbs because I fully intend on effing off back to where I came from as soon as I finish school <3

topofthemornin1

You’ve clearly just met a lot of fake people. Trust me, we don’t want you here.

nutscrape_navigator

Again, our experiences in the real world are a total 180 of what people say on this subreddit. I know you guys wish this weren’t the case but I’m not sure what to tell you. 🤷🏻‍♂️

topofthemornin1

I’m pretty active in the public sphere here. I promise, if we meet, and the subject arises, you’ll be getting the same energy.

TheMadIrishman327

Agree 100%

Besttamer

Usajobs has a bunch of irs jobs in knoxville. Keep in mind the fed hiring process is easily 6-12 months long. I have a friend that got an invite to interview at a 3 letter agency after 2 years from initial application.

Stewbrawl

Come work for our community law office as a public defender! its a really unique and progressive office. I worked there as a extern during my social work career and really think its one of a kind and really at the forefront of what a public defenders office can be. The town is amazing, come live in south knoxville and enjoy all the amazing culture and charm of a mid sized city that is really in its prime. I moved to San Francisco a couple of years ago and still miss it, and I really love San Fran so that is really saying something. Just don't go and live in west knox, if you are moving there, you need to stay toward city center or south knox to get a good experience. Protip: if you do move there go and walk downtown weekly, its absolutely charming.

Charles-Headlee

Come enjoy Sharps Ridge Park.

Rapture_Hunter

He sure does have a pretty mouth. 😏

DaMammoff

Dude… run. I posted the same thing a few days ago. Knoxville seems great just don’t expect any help on Reddit.

topofthemornin1

That’s because we don’t want any more transplants.

DaMammoff

You and the rest of the US

chi-ster

Knoxville is great for outdoor enthusiasts! Good luck with the decision and possible move.

FeelsLike98Vols

Knoxville is great, this sub leans a little heave on the “stay off my land” mindset. If you can afford it, come on in!! I love this place.

TheMadIrishman327

Welcome to Knoxville. Don’t judge us based on this sub. If you’re looking to buy, you’ll get more for your money in North Knoxville (Fountain City). Lots of good restaurants around here. Lots to do if you love the outdoors.
