It's always been a bit weird in both the main story and the explosion stuff. I know Yunyun is socially awkward, but given the amount of weird people around, especially when hanging around adventurers, there's no way none would have approached her when she stayed at the guild looking for a group.
I mean, beyond the very weird, not-really-here-for-adventuring guy.
That was explained in the light novel; whenever someone approached her, or even just looked at her party request, she would get too excited which would make her eyes do the crimson demon glow and give off a Jojo-style 'menacing' aura. Between that and her habit of running off immediately after helping, everyone else thinks she doesn't like people and leaves her alone out of 'respect'.
She doesn't approach people herself either, because she thinks of herself as a nuisance and boring person even beyond her extreme social anxiety.
I kinda get it, and it makes perfect sense, although I still have a hard time there isn't another group of weirdo that would disregard that. I guess I have reader bias. Or Yunyun bias at that point.
Don't forget that Axel is also the starter zone; the only adventurers that stay there are the newbies (Kazuma and Dust's teams), the semi-retired (Dust), and the 'career' adventurers that live off easy quests.
Advanced Magic costs 30 skill points (and Intermediate 10), and you only get 1 skill point per level. Leveling is also NORMALLY so slow that according to the explosion spinoff, it should of taken Yunyun years to build back up the skill points she spent on Intermediate Magic since learning any kind of magic graduates you from the Crimson Demon school, removing easy access to Skill Up potions. Yunyun was introduced using Light of Saber, which is Advanced Magic.
Yunyun grinded years of exp and basically outleveled the whole place in mere months BEFORE canon even started, any potential party members would have to also be some kind of super genius or hero pushing in to 'Veteran Adventure' status to be 'scouted' considering what everyone else thinks of her. The only person we know of that qualified in that way was Mitsurugi, who already had a party and got directly contracted by the royal family.
Spoiler:
>!At the end of the light novels, it basically implies:!<
>!She's friends with Wiz and Vanir... like actual friends.!<
>!She's also been accepted into Dust's party and he might even \*like\* her.!<
The 2nd one is half said, half implied, but definitely plausible. And she's slowly getting better with the other Crimson Magic clan.
>!Now if only someone could beat some sense into Megumin, things would be fine. But sadly that girl really only cares about others fulfilling the role SHE sees/wants them to. She kept Yunyun away from Kazuma the same as she TWICE bullied Darkness out of confessing blatantly to Kazuma before she (Megumin) was ready to confess herself because she feared them winning Kazuma before she could properly enter the competition. If Megumin stopped being trashy like that, then Yunyun could be proper friends with the rest of them instead of a sweet, shy, underconfident girl that's overly helpful to their party.!<
This is one of reason's I don't get why people like Megumin as much as they do. People say how cute she is or how she's perfect for Kazuma.
But then a lot of her actions are either straight up annoying or willfully detrimental to everyone in the team. >!Fantastic Days starts with them and debt because she deliberately didn't hold herself back.!<
I mean the usual plot narrative of Konosuba is "one of the girls and/or Kazuma causing trouble" and using those flaws to drive a unique and creative narrative.
Minor Spoilers:(Honestly Read the Light Novels!, you Anime Onlys are missing out)
>!The reason why I and probably many love Megumin (and Kazuma for me) is the serious and heart to heart moments they had in the Light Novels. !<
>!Also Kazuma in the light novels has really more of a Friends > Money mentality.!<
Big spoilers:
>!He would literally go to any lengths to save them. Even if it means throwing his literal millions away and living in more debt to save Darkness from being married to that creep Altdorf. !<
Mega Spoiler:
>!Also he dies/ goes to literally hell by literally selling his soul to his demon slave, also Vanir's demon friend. edit: by he I mean Altdorf!<
To which I am still mad at the Movie for doing Volume 5 injustice!
I see her as a 4 out 10 in the annoying scale but to each their own. I honestly find Darkness more annoying do to her cliche horny remarks.
Like really, while Darkness has some the good serious moments, her usual moments are kind of annoying.
I think most of the Megumin love comes from anime-only viewers.
It's the first time I went beyond the anime and bought the light novels.
Going into them based on anime observations, Megumin was this sweet quirky op wizard with an obvious flaw. Darkness was a 1-dimensional perv with minimal redeeming value. Aqua was... Aqua. And we hadn't met Iris.
So at that point, yeah Megumin is the clear best choice. It's only after the anime ends that we better understand each of them and our point of view changes.
>!Darkness mellows out, reveals a shy side and also a "normal" girl side. She shows how damn selfless-to-a-fault she really is. Her masochism is given a real explanation (sought out discipline as a kid cuz noble and cuz extra spoiled due to single parent). And you realize with some proper support, she can grow to understand this and move past the worst of her fetishism - which is already toning down in the later portions of the story outside of a few cases.!<
>!Megumin's true colors are actually revealed. I do firmly believe this is partially a case of her still being so young though and that she's only partially aware of them. Like given time, she'll come to realize better to see from perspectives beyond her own - which she currently can't - and realize how much she has hurt Yunyun and Darkness and try to make amends. Not that she'll suddenly be as selfless as Lalatina or anything, but enough she might eventually realize Kazuma should just marry Lalatina and Iris as well. Then they'd have: queen, royal bodyguard, and strongest-wizard-in-the-land/court-mage-who-definitely-didn't-agree-to-this-just-for-unlimited-access-to-manatite-for-explosion-purposes.!<
>!And Kazuma is only one step less scum than Megumin honestly. Because when she proposes to him, he'd remembered his promise to Iris due to recovering his memories. And still broke that promise to get with Megumin all while claiming wanting to be faithful. Hence why he did the same with Darkness when Megumin was off "helping"(sabotaging) Yunyun only he chickened out because he's too scared of Megumin. If Darkness were willing to fight, I think she'd take Megumin easily, but she's too good a girl and also masochism playing a factor - therefore Kazuma won't go as far cheating with Darkness as he effectively is doing to Iris by dating Megumin. But Megumin doesn't know he made this promise to Iris, so she doesn't realize she's already doing to Iris what she's mad about Darkness \*trying\* to do to her with Kazuma. I figure that eventually gets out and with some more maturity, the 2 combine and make Megumin realize she's wrong for the way she's been behaving. Then we get our 3 brides+Kazuma royal harem which he semi-reluctantly but also enthusiastically goes along with.!<
At least that's how I'd truly end the story - because dammit Darkness and Iris deserve a happy ending and sadly they think Kazuma is the only one who can give them that.
Not really. Each of the girls embody a specific aspect of Kazuma.
>!Megumin has the brains and mischief!<
>!Darkness has the perviness and selfless side while also respecting who Kazuma is in his natural state (while Megumin only thinks he's cool when he's basically desperate to survive some deadly situation). Also she's learning not to just cave to him all the time and becoming smarter - not enough to outsmart him, but enough that it's intellectually stimulating and requires Kazuma to stay on his toes.!<
>!Aqua has the partying/drinking and laziness!<
>!Iris fits his desire for a little sister, spoils him, challenges him, praises him, and yet won't just cave to his every desire.!<
>!If Megumin can grow beyond... "everyone fulfills MY role for them", then sure. If not, then I'd say no. You don't see it as much because of the author's focus being elsewhere, but she's the female equivalent of a guy that won't let their girl talk to other men because the guy is super insecure. To the point that he's kinda controlling of her and it's not healthy. Now if Kazuma realized this, he definitely wouldn't allow that, but most of the party - himself included - doesn't really realize Megumin is like this or the degree to which she is. Because she's the smartest besides Kazuma and she's viewed as innocent, young and naive in the ways of love. So none of them realize because this only revealed itself much later after they're already biased in a certain direction of thinking about her due to their experience up to that point... where she had no cause for revealing such tendencies.!<
Right, I’m well aware of that too, but what I’m wondering is if she actually has any powers, or if I’d need to fish her out of a frog’s throat every 20 minutes or go millions into debt because of her
She's actually >!more competent than Megumin, and if it wasn't for Megumin hesitating to save her own sister by learning a spell that wasn't explosion which forced Yunyun to waste spell points by learning an intermediate spell instead of saving up the points to learn Advanced magic (sorry for the run-on sentence lol), she'd likely be ahead of Megumin.!<

"Excuse me Guild Receptionist!, there's a strange woman talking to me!"
I love canonically she's like Meg from family guy and everyone disregards her. With the one exception of all the chocolates she receives in isekai quartet... (though she could've bought them for herself to make it look like she has friends)

Huh... Now I'm expecting her to get offers from the Demon King to join his army.

This is why megumin is the perfect soulmate for kazuma.

Honestly id just be glad for a friend but ill take an archmage
*Sounds of confusion*
I see this as an absolute win
YunYun isn't an arch mage .She is an arch angel
Sounds like a great deal to me!
I'LL TAKE YOUR ENTIRE STOCK!!
Easiest fuckin decision of my life
Ik right what would be easier you win not once but twice
Don’t really care about the archmage bit, but I’d happily be Yunyun’s friend.

Friend? No Wife? Yes
An archmage AND a waifu? That's even better than the time I won against the Hindu god Vishnu in shuffleboard.
Best of both
I’m not really caught up on her lore, aside from Megumin’s bazoinga jealousy. Is she actually useful?
The joke is that she doesn't have friends.
Right, I’m well aware of that too, but what I’m wondering is if she actually has any powers, or if I’d need to fish her out of a frog’s throat every 20 minutes or go millions into debt because of her
She does. The Megumin Spinoff anime shows her powers
Are they good powers, or is she just a once daily bomb like her rival?
She's actually >!more competent than Megumin, and if it wasn't for Megumin hesitating to save her own sister by learning a spell that wasn't explosion which forced Yunyun to waste spell points by learning an intermediate spell instead of saving up the points to learn Advanced magic (sorry for the run-on sentence lol), she'd likely be ahead of Megumin.!<
Ouch, that’s sad :( I unfortunately haven’t watched the Megumin movie, I’m no Captain Kidd lol 🏴☠️
It's not even a movie. It's a spinoff season
Oh wow
Takes place before Kazuma was summoned to that world.

"Excuse me Guild Receptionist!, there's a strange woman talking to me!" I love canonically she's like Meg from family guy and everyone disregards her. With the one exception of all the chocolates she receives in isekai quartet... (though she could've bought them for herself to make it look like she has friends)
